Oppose sanctuary cities bill H.R.3009

An interesting article from www.numbersusa.com about sacnutary city bill HR 3009. This follows this post about all the Sanctuary Bills. This follows this post about Donald Trump and John McCain. NumbersUSA to oppose sanctuary cities bill, H.R.3009

The House Rules Committee has scheduled a hearing for Rep. Duncan Hunter's (R-Calif.) sanctuary cities bill, H.R.3009, for Wednesday afternoon. NumbersUSA has sent a notice to all House Members, telling them that we will oppose the Hunter legislation. Here's what was sent to House offices.
While we appreciate the intent behind the Hunter sanctuary bill (H.R. 3009), NumbersUSA has no choice but to oppose it. The Hunter language is actually weaker than the language that the House adopted--by a vote of 227-198--as an amendment to the Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations Act, offered by Rep. Steve King. It is unconscionable that the House would respond to the tragic murder of Kate Steinle by moving legislation that is weaker than the language it adopted less than two months ago to defund sanctuary jurisdictions.
The bigger problem, however, is that the Hunter bill does not in any way address the largest sanctuary jurisdiction of all: the Federal government. Sanctuary states, cities, and counties release thousands of convicted criminal aliens each year, but the Department of Homeland Security releases tens of thousands of convicted criminal aliens each year. Grant Ronnebeck, murdered by a convicted criminal alien in an Arizona convenience store, is no less a victim of sanctuary policies than Kate Steinle just because his killer was released by the Department of Homeland Security.
NumbersUSA completely agrees that Congress needs to act now to stop sanctuary policies, but it needs to address all of them. Releasing convicted criminal aliens into our communities is dangerous and wrong, regardless of which government entity is doing the releasing.

Editorial: GOP punishes pro-American Representatives!

Editorial

The GOP leadership has punished its members who have voted against TPP for reasons including not wanting to give even more power to the current president, concern about the flow of LEGAL immigrants into the U.S., and concerns about losing even more of the American manufacturing base.

A reference on this is here http://www.vdare.com/posts/gop-house-leadership-purges-republicans-who-voted-against-obamatrade-and-theyre-all-immigration-patriots

Besides the relationship between immigration and the Trans-Pacific Partnership, this intra-Republican struggle has another connection to the National Question. Check out the NumbersUSA ratings of those Republicans who have been purged:
That’s right. Four Republicans with A plus ratings who just got demoted for taking the conservative stance.

Obama and Boehner not giving up on free trade bill -- Urgent calls needed today!

An interesting article from www.NumbersUSA.com about the TPA. This follows this post about Ann Coulter as a GOP strategist. This follows this post about drought and immigration. This follows this post on HOW amnesty is funded in ways other than the DHS. Remember, “Amnesty” means ANY non-enforcement of existing immigration laws! Friends,
Last week the House of Representatives rejected an expansion of Pres. Obama's executive authority over immigration by defeating TPA -- the fast track trade bill. This bill would give him full authority to negotiate America's trade policy with foreign countries, including increasing the flow of foreign workers into the United States to compete with American workers for jobs.
But House Speaker John Boehner isn't giving up and is doing everything in his power to help expand Pres. Obama's executive authority!
Today, the House will re-vote on a standalone TPA bill that, if passed, could have a devastating impact on American workers and their wages. The vote is expected to take place at NOON ET today, so please call this morning!

Call Congress NOW!
Capitol Switchboard -- (888) 995-2086

Please dial the toll-free number above that will connect you to the Capitol Switchboard. When the operator answers, ask to be connected to Representative O'Rourke's office. You can use the following talking points when talking to the staffer.
I strongly urge Representative to vote NO on TPA, H.R. 2146, when it comes to the House floor for a vote today!

This bill would expand Pres. Obama's authority over immigration by allowing him to negotiate changes to existing federal law in free trade agreements. Supporters of this bill have refused to include language to prevent trade agreements from allowing new foreign workers to take U.S. jobs.

Please vote NO on TPA, H.R.2146!

House Will Vote on Bill to Ban Abortions After 20 Weeks Near Anniversary of Kermit Gosnell Conviction

An interesting story from www.lifenews.com about the House of Representatives. This follows this post about Sofia Vegara. For two very interesting books click HERE.

House Will Vote on Bill to Ban Abortions After 20 Weeks Near Anniversary of Kermit Gosnell Conviction

National Steven Ertelt

Republicans in the House of Representatives will hold a vote on or around the anniversary of the murder conviction of late-term abortionist Kermit Gosnell on a marquee bill to ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy because unborn children feel intense pain in abortions. This is the second time Republicans have planned a vote on the major pro-life bill — and this vote is expected to take place next week, possibly Wednesday, the anniversary of Gosnell’s conviction.
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a pro-life California Congressman, confirmed the vote to the Weekly Standard.
“Life is precious and we must do everything we can to fight for it and protect it,” said McCarthy, a California Republican. “Our commitment for the House to consider this important legislation has been steadfast and I am proud of the work of our members to prepare this bill for House consideration next week.”
In January, Congresswoman Renee Ellmers led the charge to sabotage the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act — a move that ultimately forced Republicans to pull the bill from the House floor — because she disagreed with a requirement in the bill that rape be reported to a law enforcement agency before an abortion is performed for rape.
Republican leaders in the House had planned to hold a monumental vote on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade in January on the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, legislation that bans abortions after 20 weeks based in part on the compelling scientific evidence showing unborn babies feel intense pain at that point, if not earlier.
However, several Republicans who have pro-life voting records and voted for the bill the last time around, publicly led by Rep. Renee Ellmers, sabotaged the bill by objecting to the provision allowing abortions in cases of rape or incest only if the rape were reported to law enforcement. Ellmers and the lawmakers who worked with her, threatened to vote against the bill or kill it by siding with Democrats to kill it. Although Ellmers publicly indicated she would vote for the bill, privately she painted another picture and she and other members forced House Republican leaders to pull the bill and rework the language.
After months of wrangling over language, with Ellmers and some other members of Congress siding with her for language that was a more expansive rape exception, House Republicans have finalized the language of the bill in a way that has the support of Ellmers and her colleagues, the backing of pro-life groups and in a manner that should result in a strong pro-life vote that paves the way for Senate consideration.
According to pro-life sources who spoke with LifeNews, the rape exception language will be airtight by requiring some sort of documented medical treatment or counseling 48 hours prior to the abortion (so hopefully the mother has a further chance to weigh abortion alternatives). In addition, such treatment or counseling must be provided by physicians or counselors that are outside of the abortion industry. In cases of rape or incest of a minor, the abuse must first be reported to either social service or law enforcement.
As pro-life sources have informed LifeNews, other new provisions of the bill that strengthen in include a born-alive infant protection requirement that requires a second doctor be present and prepared to provide care to the child if he or she is born alive and that the child must receive the same level of care as would any other premature infant. The baby must then be transported and admitted to a hospital. The woman is also empowered with a right to sue if the law is not followed, and is provided with an informed consent form that notifies her of the age of her baby and the requirements under the law.
Abortionists are explicitly required to follow state mandatory reporting laws and state parental involvement laws. Finally, abortionists are required to report any late abortions done under the exceptions to the Center for Disease Control and such data will be compiled into an annual public report to ensure accountability.
Top pro-life advocates are strongly supporting the final version of the bill up for a vote next week, according to the Weekly Standard. Two major pro-life groups have already signed off on the revised bill.
“We will have even stronger support than we did in the last Congress,” said Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey, a leading pro-life advocate in the House. “It will be good to have a truly unified pro-life conference.”
National Right to Life Committee president Carol Tobias worked closely with Republican leadership staff members and met Thursday with McCarthy. “I felt very comfortable working with leadership staff,” said Tobias. “We were working as allies.”
“We are thankful to our pro-life allies on the Hill, including House GOP leadership and the Congressional Pro-Life Women’s Caucus, who have tirelessly worked to bring this bill to a vote,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List. “This process has yielded a strong bill which we expect to pass next week with enthusiastic bipartisan support.”
Sponsoring Congressman Trent Franks of Arizona says the bill has the potential to save thousands of babies from abortion.
In a statement, Franks told LifeNews: “More than 18,000 ‘very late term’ abortions are performed every year on perfectly healthy unborn babies in America. These are innocent and defenseless children who can not only feel pain, but who can survive outside of the womb in most cases, and who are torturously killed without even basic anesthesia. Many of them cry and scream as they die, but because it is amniotic fluid going over their vocal cords instead of air, we don’t hear them.”

Douglas Johnson of the National Right to Life Committee says several states have already passed the bill.
“The Franks-Blackburn bill is based on the NRLC model legislation that has been enacted in 10 states, and it reflects a policy that is broadly supported in national public opinion polls. In the new Congress, every member of the House and Senate will go on record on whether to permit the continued killing of pain-capable unborn children, in the sixth month and later,” he told LifeNews.
A national poll by The Polling Company found that, after being informed that there is scientific evidence that unborn children are capable of feeling pain at least by 20 weeks, 64% would support a law banning abortion after 20 weeks, unless the mother’s life was in danger. Only 30% said they would oppose such a law.
A November 2014 poll from Quinnipiac found that 60 percent of Americans support legislation limiting abortions after 20 weeks, including 56 percent of Independents and 46 percent of Democrats.

During the hearing on the 20-week ban when the House approved it previously, former abortion practitioner Anthony Levatino told members of the committee the gruesome details of his former abortion practice and how he became pro-life following the tragic automobile accident of his child.
Another bombshell dropped during the hearing came from Dr. Maureen Condic, who is Associate Professor of Neurobiology and Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine. She testified that the unborn child is capable of reacting to pain as early as 8-10 weeks. This is when most abortions in America take place.

The bill relies on the science of fetal pain to establish a Constitutional reason for Congress to ban abortions late in pregnancy. The science behind the concept of fetal pain is fully established and Dr. Steven Zielinski, an internal medicine physician from Oregon, is one of the leading researchers into it. He first published reports in the 1980s to validate research showing evidence for it.
He has testified before Congress that an unborn child could feel pain at “eight-and-a-half weeks and possibly earlier” and that a baby before birth “under the right circumstances, is capable of crying.”
He and his colleagues Dr. Vincent J. Collins and Thomas J. Marzen were the top researchers to point to fetal pain decades ago. Collins, before his death, was Professor of Anesthesiology at Northwestern University and the University of Illinois and author of Principles of Anesthesiology, one of the leading medical texts on the control of pain.
“The functioning neurological structures necessary to suffer pain are developed early in a child’s development in the womb,” they wrote.
“Functioning neurological structures necessary for pain sensation are in place as early as 8 weeks, but certainly by 13 1/2 weeks of gestation. Sensory nerves, including nociceptors, reach the skin of the fetus before the 9th week of gestation. The first detectable brain activity occurs in the thalamus between the 8th and 10th weeks. The movement of electrical impulses through the neural fibers and spinal column takes place between 8 and 9 weeks gestation. By 13 1/2 weeks, the entire sensory nervous system functions as a whole in all parts of the body,” they continued.
With Zielinski and his colleagues the first to provide the scientific basis for the concept of fetal pain, Dr. Kanwaljeet Anand has provided further research to substantiate their work.
One leading expert in the field of fetal pain, Dr. Kanwaljeet S. Anand at the University of Tennessee, stated in his expert report commissioned by the U.S. Department of Justice, “It is my opinion that the human fetus possesses the ability to experience pain from 20 weeks of gestation, if not earlier, and the pain perceived by a fetus is possibly more intense than that perceived by term newborns or older children.”
“The neural pathways are present for pain to be experienced quite early by unborn babies,” explains Steven Calvin, M.D., perinatologist, chair of the Program in Human Rights Medicine, University of Minnesota, where he teaches obstetrics.
Dr. Colleen A. Malloy, Assistant Professor, Division of Neonatology at Northwestern University in her testimony before the House Judiciary Committee in May 2012 said, “[w]hen we speak of infants at 22 weeks LMP [Note: this is 20 weeks post fertilization], for example, we no longer have to rely solely on inferences or ultrasound imagery, because such premature patients are kicking, moving, reacting, and developing right before our eyes in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.”
“In today’s medical arena, we resuscitate patients at this age and are able to witness their ex-utero growth and development. Medical advancement and technology have enabled us to improve our ability to care for these infants…In fact, standard of care for neonatal intensive care units requires attention to and treatment of neonatal pain,” Dr. Malloy testified. She continued, “[t]hus, the difference between fetal and neonatal pain is simply the locale in which the pain occurs. The receiver’s experience of the pain is the same. I could never imagine subjecting my tiny patients to horrific procedures such as those that involve limb detachment or cardiac injection.”

Must Pass Legislation: Suggested Riders To Attach To Bills The Obama Administration Wants To Pass

An interesting article from www.vdare.com about riders that can be attached to bills. This follows this post about the GOP who voted to fund executive amnesty. Must Pass Legislation: Suggested Riders To Attach To Bills The Obama Administration Wants To Pass

Once again there is must pass legislation in Congress. This time it is a transportation bill, the darling eye of many legislators, government contractors, and blue collar white dominated unions. The Republicans are looking to attach other legislation opposed by the Obama Regime in order to cram it down Obama’s throat. Unfortunately, stopping the Obama Regime Administrative Amnesty is not part of the plan to over-ride an Obama veto.
Breitbart by William Bigalow March 4, 2015
Senate Fails To Override Obama Veto On Keystone XL
The GOP, desirous of overriding Barack Obama’s veto of legislation approving the Keystone XL oil sands pipeline, failed to do so on Wednesday, with the vote 62-37—five votes short of the two-thirds majority needed…
But the GOP has other plans to get the pipeline approved; Sen. John Hoeven (R-ND), who wrote the bill, said the GOP will probably attach the legislation to a long-term transportation funding bill that faces a May 31 deadline. That idea has Keystone backers confident of its passage; they believe that Barack Obama would not veto the six-year highway bill even if the pipeline is attached to it.
Manchin admitted, “This is coming back in the form an infrastructure bill, a road bill that we are all voting for.”
So, must pass legislation supported by corrupt Democrats. Sounds like another opportunity to attack legislation to stop the Obama Regime Administrative Amnesty. And this time it is not a spending bill, so no faux shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security to worry about.
More importantly, this is not a spending rider that will prohibit the use of funds, but is actual legislation that will be permanent, not just for a fiscal year. This gives patriots in Congress the opportunity to permanently end Administrative Amnesties, mandate enforcement, increase use of expedited removal, impose non-feasance standards on DHS employees, and build a fence, all as part of legislation that even liberals want as infrastructure spending is very popular in Congress.
Here are some suggestions for the legislation:
  • End the Obama Regime administrative amnesties, DACA and DAPA by prohibiting those programs by name, and prohibiting any similar program, including deferred action, parole-in-place, public interest parole, and delayed enforced departure.
  • End the abuse of parole by the Regime by prohibiting all parole of aliens other than for criminal prosecution or for testimony as witnesses in criminal proceedings.
  • Expand expedited removal to all aliens unlawfully present; e.g. any alien who entered the United States without inspection and admission or any alien, other than a legal permanent resident without a criminal conviction, who was inspected and admitted but violated the terms and conditions of admission or who overstayed the period of admission.
  • Extend mandatory deportation of any alien convicted of a felony in the United States or two or more misdemeanors, as well as any misdemeanor that is a crime involving moral turpitude or illegal drugs. For legal permanent residents and lawfully present non-immigrant aliens, criminal conviction triggers expedited removal.
  • Prohibit the granting of employment authorization to any alien unlawfully present or not specifically authorized employment by an Act of Congress.
  • Limit Temporary Protected Status to 2 years in the United States. Said aliens may apply for asylum at the end of those two years.
  • Reform the Executive Office for Immigration Reform (EOIR) by restricting their authority to review only the cases of legal permanent residents, aliens admitted as asylees, and aliens admitted as refugees. This would not include aliens applying for refugee, asylum, a non-immigrant visa, or legal permanent residency.
  • Re-create the Secure Communities program and authorize States and their political subdivisions to detain illegal aliens for 96 hours or three Federal business days, whichever is shorter, at the request of an immigration officer. Agencies who refuse to honor a detainer from DHS will be ineligible for State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP) funds and any DHS grant funds, or access to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and Interstate Information Index (III).
  • Re-authorize the 287g program and mandate DHS to accept all previously participating law enforcement agencies immediately as well as mandate accepting any new law enforcement agencies application within 180 days of application. Authorize any State or political subdivision of a State, law enforcement agency to detain and investigate any alien for lawful presence. Mandate real-time availability of an immigration officer to assist either in person or remotely. Authorize the arrest and detention of said aliens until the alien can be interviewed by an immigration officer.
  • Require all employees, officers, or contractors who enforce immigration law or who adjudicate benefits, to adhere to non-feasance standards that prohibit said persons from ignoring an immigration law violation and requiring due diligence in response to any allegation, incident, complaint, or information regarding an immigration law violation. Prohibit any disciplinary action against an immigration officer who takes lawful action mandated by legislation. Mandatory termination of any officer, employee, or contractor in a supervisory, management, or executive authority who orders any other officer, employee, or contractor to commit non-feasance, with loss of any retirement benefits.
  • Prohibit asylum applications by any alien who enters the United States from safe third country. Identify Mexico, Canada, any nation a member of NATO, the European Union, and any nation with whom the United States has a defense treaty as a safe third country. All applications for asylum and refugee status are to be adjudicated by DHS and are unreviewable by the courts or the EOIR.
  • Mandate the use of any excess funds accumulated from immigration benefit applications be used to fund the construction of a border fence at least 25 feet high. Impose a $100.00 addition to the fees for any immigration benefit application to fund the building of a border fence. Prohibit the waiver of any fee for any immigration benefit.
  • Prohibit use of any funds received by an agency as fees, fines, seizures, or other manner unless those funds are appropriated by Congress.
  • Prohibit the entry of citizens or nationals, except as diplomats accredited to the United States or the United Nations, of any nation that refuses to assist with and accept the deportation of that country’s citizens or nationals. Prohibit any officer of the United States from doing same, with any violation of this to be a mandatory termination offense.
  • Prohibit the submission or adjudication of applications for waivers of grounds of inadmissibility of any alien physically present in the United States.
  • Authorize any citizen of the United States to obtain a writ of mandamus to enforce any section of this act.
Must pass legislation is an opportunity for immigration patriots, let’s hold the RINO feet to the fire as well as those Democrats who want that transportation spending.

Editorial: Is there an oppositon party in the U.S.?

Editorial

Is there any opposition party in the U.S.? Among the GOP, there were a small and appreciated minority that voted against funding executive amnesty in both the Senate and House, but the leadership in both houses was in favor of it. Therefore, except for this small minority, there seems to be NO opposition to the President by the other party.

ALIPAC Calls for GOP Primary Challengers for the "Cantor List" That Voted for Amnesty

For National Release

March 4, 2014

Americans for Legal Immigration PAC is dropping the organization's endorsement for 10 GOP members of Congress who were caught voting with Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats yesterday to fund Obama's unconstitutional and lawless amnesty efforts. ALIPAC is also calling for GOP primary challengers to prepare to run against the 75 Republicans who helped the Democrats fund amnesty and Obama's abuses of power on a list of political targets now referred to as "The Cantor List."

ALIPAC is moving the following 10 GOP lawmakers, among the 75 voting for Obama's amnesty, from ALIPAC's Endorsed List to the Amnesty Supporters List: Representatives Patrick McHenry (R-NC), Ed Royce (R-CA), Vern Buchanan (R-FL), Harold Rogers (R-KY), Steve Scalise (R-LA), Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-NJ), Tom Cole (R-OK), Joe Pitts (R-PA), Tim Murphy (R-PA), and Kay Granger (R-TX).

The Cantor List refers to the stunning, miraculous, and historic defeat of Representative Eric Cantor by candidate Dave Brat and campaign manager Zachary Werrell in the 2014 GOP primaries. Cantor was defeated because of his documented support for amnesty for illegal immigrants even though he outspent his grassroots opponent 40 to 1!

"It is time for Americans to repeat the successful overthrow of GOP amnesty supporter Eric Cantor in the districts of the 75 Republicans who betrayed the voters of America when they voted to fund Obama's unconstitutional and lawless amnesty dictates!" said William Gheen, President of ALIPAC. "We need 75 Americans in 75 districts who are willing to stand up and announce their plans to challenge these Republican sellouts that are working in collusion with the Democrats to deprive Americans of any choice on the issues of amnesty and the nation destroying illegal alien invasion of our American homeland."

This week ALIPAC will be working to make sure that every Republican who betrayed their base and constituents to fund Obama's dictatorial amnesty plans are added to the group Illegal Alien Amnesty Supporters list. (click to view), and that the 10 candidates ALIPAC had mistakenly believed were opposed to amnesty for illegals are removed from the PAC's endorsements list. (click to view)

ALIPAC is also trying to get Republican members of Congress to legislatively change direction and pass a new kind of resolution that instructs all federal employees to disregard Obama's unlawful immigration memos. (see release)

Furthermore, the detailed information of which Republican lawmakers are being targeted for removal from public office 'Eric Cantor style' are being compiled on The Cantor List at this link...

Esther: A Woman of Faith and Courage

Esther: A Woman of Faith and Courage

Printer-friendly version

The Bible offers Christians many examples of faith from which we can learn and be encouraged. One of the most remarkable examples is that of Queen Esther.

Has fear ever paralyzed you, made you afraid to make a critical decision because of possible or probable serious consequences?
It has been said that courage is not the absence of fear; it is the mastery of it. The Bible, however, adds an important element to the definition of courage: trust and faith in God. Moses told the ancient Israelites not to fear the other nations when they crossed over the Jordan River into the promised land, because God was with them and would not forsake them (Deuteronomy:31:6).
How can you have this kind of faith? How can you step out and confidently make decisions that will affect the course of your physical-and maybe even your spiritual-life?

From an orphan to a queen

For the answer, consider the example of a Jewish girl from ancient Persia.
In the third year of his reign, Ahasuerus, king of the Medes and Persians, searched for a new queen from among the beautiful virgins in his kingdom. She was to replace Queen Vashti. Vashti had humiliated her husband in front of many people including all his officials. She had refused to allow him to display her beauty before everyone at his special feast (Esther:1:10-22).
Esther, a young orphan, was among the women the king ordered brought to the palace for special pampering and preparation for the king's scrutiny as possible royal replacements. Her cousin, Mordecai, had reared her. Mordecai was a Jewish servant "in the king's gate" (Esther:2:19), which implied that he held a position in the king's court. Following her cousin's advice, Esther did not reveal her ethnic identity. After the king chose her as queen, she maintained her contact with her cousin (Esther 2).

Plot to wipe out a race

Sometime later Ahasuerus appointed Haman, a man prominent in the kingdom, to a special office over his princes. Ahasuerus commanded that each servant should bow down to Haman, paying him homage. Mordecai refused.
Haman was enraged by Mordecai's actions. But he wasn't satisfied just to seek revenge on one man; he devised a scheme to destroy all the Jews in the kingdom. He approached the king and informed him that the Jews did not keep the king's laws. He convinced Ahasuerus to issue a decree saying 10,000 talents of silver would go to anyone who would destroy the Jews (Esther 3).
In ancient Persia, when the king made a decree and sealed it with his signet ring, it was not to be revoked or amended. Ahasuerus's decree went out, resulting in great mourning and fasting among the Jews throughout the land. Clothed in sackcloth and ashes of mourning, Mordecai sat in the square near the king's gate. When Esther learned of Mordecai's circumstance, she told her maids to take garments to clothe him and to take away his sackcloth. But Mordecai would not accept them.
Esther then sent Hathach, one of the king's eunuchs who attended her, to find out what was wrong with Mordecai. Mordecai told him all that had happened and gave him a copy of the written decree to show to Esther. He also told him to tell her to go to the king and plead for her people.
Esther had not seen the king for 30 days. The king enforced a law that anyone who came into the inner court to approach him whom he had not specifically called was to die. However, the king could make an exception by holding out his golden scepter, thereby sparing the person. So Esther sent the eunuch back to Mordecai with the message that she could not enter the court to see the king.
Mordecai answered that, if she did nothing, she risked death along with all her countrymen in the kingdom. He also asked a piercing question: What if God had elevated Esther to her position as queen for the specific purpose of helping save her people at this critical time? (Esther:4:13-14).

Esther's dilemma

What a decision for such a young woman! Death seemed certain regardless of what she decided. Vashti had been only banished from her position as queen. Esther might actually be killed!
She had to answer Mordecai. What would she do? She must have prayed and agonized over her decision. Tension and anxiety must have consumed her. She was sickened with fear for herself and her people.
She must have asked herself a hundred times would God really let her die if she refused to help the Jews? She was so young. Surely God did not want her to die. On the other hand, could she stand silently by and watch heartless Haman annihilate her people? Why couldn't her dilemma just go away like a bad dream?
In the midst of her turmoil, Esther realized she could not allow fear to paralyze her into inaction; that in itself would be a decision. Instead, she left the outcome with God. It was clear she had only one real choice.
Even in giving Mordecai her answer, Esther knew she did not have the courage within herself to face Ahasuerus. But she did know where to go for the courage she lacked: to God in fasting and prayer. Placing her life in God's hands, she let Him decide the outcome for her and her people.
She sent word to Mordecai requesting that he ask their fellow Jews to fast for her for three days and nights. She and her maids would do likewise. Then she promised to go before the king, knowing full well she was risking her life (Esther:4:16).
You can read the remainder of the book of Esther to see what happened. The king did extend his golden scepter, and he spared Esther's life. After several special banquets for the king and Haman, Esther finally revealed Haman's plot and made known her request for her people. The king ordered Haman hanged on the very gallows he had prepared for Mordecai's execution.
The king issued a new decree: The Jews were free to defend themselves and destroy anyone who would assault them. He promoted Mordecai, and the Jews were saved. To this day, many Jews observe the Feast of Purim in honor of this event.

What can we learn?

Sometimes fear is our normal human reaction when we are faced with a seemingly impossible decision. Acknowledging our lack of courage is the first step to overcoming it. But we must not allow fear to paralyze us into taking no action at all.
You must realize that you need help and that you cannot go it alone. Recognize that God is all powerful, that He has promised never to leave you or forsake you (Hebrews:13:5). Go to Him in prayer and fasting to seek His will in making the right decision. Then confidently make your decision, with the courage and conviction that God is on your side.
Perhaps a fitting conclusion to this story of godly courage can come from the words on a memorial in Westminster Abbey. Inscribed on the monument to Lord Lawrence are these words: "He feared man so little because he feared God so much."

Worries about a nuclear-armed Iran are real, and Israel is in the crosshairs. Will the Israelis act, and if so, when?

Can you hear the time bomb ticking in the Middle East? If you flinch under the weight of the escalating price and humiliating dependence on foreign oil, if you hear the threats from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad against Israel and the West and if you hear Ahmadinejad's defiant rejection of the West's oft-repeated demands for Iran to cease and desist from enriching uranium, then you do indeed hear the Iranian bomb ticking in the Middle East. Could it go off in the not-too-distant future?
Israelis cannot just wait for the bomb to go off; they live next door. Will Israel attack Iran and if so, when? Recently, Israel conducted an obvious military exercise over the Mediterranean Sea near Greece. The idea of this military exercise was to show that Israel's planes would fly the distance necessary to mount a mission to knock out Iran's nuclear facilities. Israel's implied threat is simple and direct: If enrichment continues, we could strike!

Israeli military exercises over the Mediterranean

Putnam Media Managing Editor Rick Pedraza wrote an insightful article for Newsmax.com titled "Bolton: Israel Will Strike Iran if Obama Is Elected." It addressed a recent Fox News interview of former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton. Pedraza commented on Israel's massive air force exercise over Greece, which the Greek, Israeli and U.S. forces later confirmed was a test run for a strike on Iran's main uranium enrichment plant.
The ordinary person may not have considered Israel's determined, strategic and geopolitical defense against Iran's covert and overt threats of nuclear warfare. Bolton has: "'I think if they are to do anything, the most likely period is after our elections and before the inauguration of the next President.' They'd have to make a judgment whether to [strike] during the remainder of President Bush's term in office or wait for his successor" (www.newsmax.com ).
Remarkably, and counterintuitive to what might be considered a public norm, "Bolton believes Arab countries will support an Israeli strike, effectively ending Iran's nuclear ambitions, while publicly denouncing it" (ibid., emphasis added).
Former Ambassador Bolton thinks that if Senator John McCain wins the presidential race, the Israelis might postpone the attack, offering, "McCain's stance on Iran 'is far more realistic than that of the Bush administration'" (ibid.). Mr. Bolton thinks that Iran would not respond immediately to a strike since they would fear an American reprisal.

Israel, a very tiny nation

With all the saber rattling, Israel has little recourse but to take a very strong military stand, no matter the threat. This small nation is surrounded by overwhelming numbers of Arab states. Israel occupies a pitiful pinch of real estate blanketed by its Arab neighbors, many within its own borders. Every inch of Israel's territory is seen as critical to its safety.
It's easy to discover why Israel is in such a precarious and highly dangerous geopolitical position, a tempting prize for its larger neighbors. Israel, with an area of about 8,000 square miles, is 1/20th the size of California. Israel is 260 miles long with a 120-mile coastline and is 70 miles across at its widest point. Israel is surrounded by more than 20 Arab nations equal to more than 630 times its size, more than 50 times its population—and the surrounding nations currently hold all the oil.

U.S. presidential influence in the mix

With only a few months until the American presidential elections, Israel should and likely will give the Bush administration one more chance to stop Iran's rush to enter the atomic and nuclear age. If nothing concrete happens before January 2009, it's possible that Israel will wait no more.
Will or can the United States do more than offer veiled threats to Iran, considering the U.S. involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan? The surge is working in Iraq, but Iraqi police alone aren't yet able to keep the peace. Taliban fighters are attempting to regain a foothold in Afghanistan. There is speculation that the United States may transfer troops from Iraq to Afghanistan to quell the Taliban surge.
The perplexing entanglement in the Middle East brings to mind Winston Churchill's 1939 radio broadcast in which he referred to forecasting the reaction of Russia to German aggression: "It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma [i.e., a puzzle, difficult to solve]; but perhaps there is a key. That key is Russian national interest."
Perhaps the key to the Iranian threat, counterintuitively, might just be the Arab nations' fear of Iranian hegemony right next door. Though they are overwhelmingly Muslim, the majority of Iranians are ethnically Persians rather than Arabs. The Iranians are also predominately Shiite Muslims (like the majority in Iraq), which makes the Sunni Muslims who control the rest of the Middle East's oil quite nervous.
If there's a military strike on Iran, either from Israel or the West, oil could spike to over $200 a barrel, further alienating the West from unsympathetic oil cartels. Gasoline could rise to $6 a gallon if not more.
It is clear that any U.S. intrusion into Iranian affairs would provoke a strong reaction from surrounding Arab countries, at least verbally. But would they do more? Consider that Iran's neighbors would not like Iran to have the bomb. Privately they would like a leveling of the playing field. An Iran with nuclear weapons would be a threat to the Arab nations, as well as to Israel. So don't assume that threatening rhetoric from nearby Arabic nations means that they are in league with Iran on this hot topic.
The U.S. presidential race is being weighed in the balance by both Iran and Israel. Both Iran and Israel will play out their hands based on how tough they think the next U.S. president will be on Middle Eastern geopolitics.

Will Israel survive?

Will Israel strike at Iranian nuclear facilities? If they conclude they need to, they probably will. It's a matter of self-preservation. With the recent announcement that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert will step down after September elections, that seems more likely. Olmert has generally been viewed as a weak and ineffective leader, particularly in military matters.
What will be the outcome of all this? It won't be what most people would expect. Ironically, the Bible shows the Middle East and Israel being invaded by a European-based power described by Daniel as the king of the North (Daniel:11:40-41). Zechariah describes a terrible attack on Jerusalem, with half the city going into captivity (Zechariah:14:1-3).
But after all this, the inhabitants of the Middle East—Jews, Arabs and Iranians alike—will not be thinking about bombs but plowshares (Isaiah:2:4)!
