CIS: Immigrant Households Cost Taxpayers 41% More in Welfare Benefits

https://www.numbersusa.com/sendfax

The Center for Immigration Studies released a new study showing that households headed by an immigrant uses on average around $6,234 in welfare benefits, a 41% increase compared to households headed by a native. The study used information from the Census Bureau’s 2012 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), which is a survey used by the government that provides the most accurate picture of welfare utilization.
CIS’s Executive Director, Mark Krikorian, explained that, “Immigrants are such heavy users of welfare not because they don’t work, but because, on average, they have little education and thus earn low wages. If we continue to permit large numbers of less-educated people to move here from abroad, we have to accept that there will be huge and ongoing costs to taxpayers.”
The CIS study also found that:
  • The average immigrant household (legal or illegal) consumes 33% more in cash welfare, 57% more in food assistance, and 44% more in Medicaid dollars than native households.
  • Illegal immigrant households cost an average of $5,692 (collected largely on behalf of their U.S.- born children) while legal immigrant households cost taxpayers around $6,378 per year.

If You’re Over 70 and Done With Life, Euthanasia Campaigners Want You to Kill Yourself

An interesting story from www.lifenews.com about euthanasia. This follows this post about pro-choice intolerance. For two very interesting books click HERE.
Please follow me here.

The Dutch Right to Die Society (NVVE), is now lobbying to have the law changed to allow persons reaching the age of 70 years of age who believe that their life is complete and who are tired of living to be given a lethal pill with which to kill themselves. The Society claims that this is already happening and the law needs to be changed to prevent abuse.

Right to Life challenges the Voluntary Euthanasia Society New Zealand to admit that they support giving a suicide pill to all 70 year olds in New Zealand who are tired of living.
It is always morally wrong to take life. This proposal is an attack on the sanctity of life and the intrinsic dignity of every human being. It is a denial of our stewardship of the precious life that our Creator has entrusted to us.
The advocates for a culture of death claim that suicide is a human right. This campaign exposes the sham that euthanasia is all about compassion and preventing people dying with intolerable suffering. It isn’t really about that all. What it is about is a misguided at best group of persons who seek an ever expanding set of criteria under which suicide is promoted as the  answer to adversity and life’s problems. Ultimately though, it will be all about removing lives considered not worthy of living.
Holland is in the powerful grip of a culture of death. It is expected that this campaign which commenced in the nineties will ultimately succeed, as the Royal Dutch Medical Society  strongly supports doctor assisted suicide and is currently  in consultation with the Dutch Right to Die Society on the implementation of this lethal proposal.
This new attack on life, conveys the message that some lives are of no further value to the community, that some people  have nothing to offer and that the state is prepared to provide you with a suicide pill so that you can kill yourself. When this right is established, it may ultimately become a duty to kill yourself on reaching the age of 70 as it is cheaper to get someone to kill themselves rather than to  provide the medical treatment that may be needed.
Once implemented why stop at 70? Would that not be discriminating against others who are tired of life such as disturbed teenagers or indeed any person? Recently the Dutch euthanasia advocate, Dr Rob Jonquiere, principle architect of the Dutch Assisted Suicide legislation was in New Zealand on a speaking tour sponsored by the Voluntary Euthanasia Society New Zealand. He was an advocate for giving a suicide pill to all 70 year old persons. Right to Life believes that because the VESNZ never distanced itself from this contentious proposal,  that they also support giving a lethal suicide pill to all 70 year olds.

Gates Foundation Will Sink Another $120 Million Into Promoting Abortion and Population Control

An interesting story from www.lifenews.com about Bill Gates promoting abortion. This follows this post about the governor's race in Kentucky. For two very interesting books click HERE.
Please follow me here.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is funneling more money into global programs promoting population control and abortion after a group warned that international family planning goals are not being met.

The Gates Foundation promised to give an additional $120 million to Family Planning 2020 programs that support “the rights of women and girls to decide when and how many children they want to have,” the news website All Africa reported today.
“The announcement came in response to a new report which found that the global community risks falling short of its goal to reach an additional 120 million women and girls with access to contraceptives and family planning services by 2020,” according to the report.
Both Planned Parenthood and Marie Stopes International, two of the largest abortion businesses in the world, are partners in the global Family Planning 2020 initiative, according to a press release from the initiative.
The abortion chain Marie Stopes International also sent out a tweet yesterday celebrating the Gates Foundation’s large donation.
The Gates Foundation has faced criticism in the past for giving money to programs that support abortion.
In 2014, after Melinda Gates claimed her foundation will not fund abortions, LiveAction reported that the foundation gave huge donations to several abortion businesses.
LifeNews.com reported at the time:
According to the Gates Foundation grant database, the Foundation gave Planned Parenthood of America, the International Planned Parenthood Federation, and Planned Parenthood of Western Washington about $71 million from before 2009 through 2013. Additionally, the Gates Foundation gave $46.1 million to Marie Stopes International in 2012 alone.
Much of this giving is focused on Africa, Asia, and Latin America, where abortion-providers like Planned Parenthood, Marie Stopes, and Ipas seek to overturn pro-life laws and sometimes even provide illicit abortion drugs.
CLICK LIKE IF YOU’RE PRO-LIFE!

While Gates Foundation funds cannot be earmarked for abortion, the fungibility of money makes it easier for these organizations to provide abortion internationally.  In other words, every dollar the Gates Foundation gives to Planned Parenthood for distributing birth control or building an abortion-friendly clinic frees up a dollar in Planned Parenthood’s budget to spend elsewhere.
In 2012, Melinda Gates was criticized for promoting abortion and population control at an international meeting.
The same year, she was criticized for hosting a Family Planning Summit in London with two of the biggest pro-abortion groups in the world, the UN Population Fund and International Planned Parenthood Federation.

Treasures of Thankfulness

Thursday of next week is Thanksgiving Day here in the U.S.A. Originally established to thank God for the blessings received in this country, yet as a nation we seem to have forgotten the meaning of Thanksgiving Day. Consequently it has morphed into the opening bell for the Christmas buying season. Retailers have been feeling the economic pinch in recent years, and so have become even more aggressive in luring potential customers into their stores on Thanksgiving or even before that day.
Some years ago I was interested in getting a new computer for my wife and decided that I would go out early on Black Friday hoping to get a great deal. I arrived at the computer store shortly before 5 a.m. and witnessed a mob of people already there. Literally, standing room only. The line for the checkout stretched half-way around the interior of the store. Needless to say, the computer bargain I was looking for was long gone. This scenario has not improved over the years. People now camp out in front of retail stores days before Thanksgiving so that they can be one of the first in the store on Black Friday.
Remembering my experience, some questions come to my mind:
- Are we as zealous for what God has given us? What does Christ tell us to set as our priority in Matthew 6:33? God wants us to desire His way actively, not passively – desiring what God desires should come first in our lives. Do we value the calling God has given to us now, more than all of those shoppers giving up their sleep on a day off from work in order to get the greatest bargains?
- If you had to purchase the truth of God, what would you be willing to pay? What if you had the treasure in your back yard to purchase such a truth and didn’t even know it? Read Matthew 13:44-46.
Do we value the truth God gives us that much? Are we deeply thankful for the calling God has given to us now – to be part of the firstfruits? Are we thankful to have the hope of His Kingdom – to know that there are solutions to the problems mankind has created in this world? Are we thankful to be called to serve, and be able to practice that in this lifetime and see the blessings that come from living God’s way of life?
- Perhaps on this Sabbath day, before the holiday of Thanksgiving you could make a personal list of what you are thankful for – both physical and spiritually – that God has given to you.
It’s easy to see what the world values during this time of year. Very few celebrate Thanksgiving with true thankfulness. Few are seeking something bigger than the latest gadget in their life. And few are willing to invest in changing themselves so that they can be part of changing the world for the better.
Having been called out of that world, we need to constantly remind ourselves what God has given us to value. Let us be thankful for the physical and spiritual blessings of God. And let’s remember to be thankful for the knowledge that our God is loving, merciful, patient, and giving.

Former Olympic athlete Bruce Jenner has recently been celebrated in the media for gender transition, with a name change to Caitlyn--helping to push the culture into greater acceptance of transgenderism. America has become increasingly liberal in its moral outlook in various ways, and now it seems a pivot point has been reached, with more people than ever embracing things that would have been unthinkable not long ago.
As pointed out in the New York Post: "Compared to just a few years ago, we have a completely different set of ideas about what constitutes acceptable behavior. As Caitlyn Jenner puts it in her new reality show, 'I'm the new normal'" (Kyle Smith, "A Massive, Silent Cultural Revolution Has Changed America," June 6, 2015).
Breitbart news noted that as a pushback, on June 3, 2015, "the Wall Street Journal's online edition promoted a June 2014 op-ed by Dr. Paul McHugh, former psychiatrist-in-chief at John Hopkins Hospital, which argues that transgender identity is a mental illness akin to bulimia and should not be treated with surgery, which can cause more harm than good" (Joel Pollak, "WSJ Promotes Op-Ed Claiming Transgender Identity is a Mental Disorder," June 3, 2015). Jenner, who's had feminizing hormone therapy and plastic surgery, has not had actual sex-change surgery but has not ruled it out either.
The Journal article by Dr. McHugh is well worth reading. He says that "this intensely felt sense of being transgendered constitutes a mental disorder in two respects. The first is that the idea of sex misalignment is simply mistaken--it does not correspond with physical reality. The second is that it can lead to grim psychological outcomes" ("Transgender Surgery Isn't the Solution," June 12, 2014).
He further explains it as an "assumption" disorder like "anorexia and bulimia nervosa, where the assumption that departs from physical reality is the belief by the dangerously thin that they are overweight." We should not support their delusion by condoning their efforts to lose more weight. Yet this is what is done for those who feel transgendered in providing them hormone treatment and surgery and demanding that they be recognized as the opposite sex and be allowed to use public restroom facilities of the gender they identify with.
Several state governments now bar psychiatric treatment to restore natural gender feelings to a transgender minor--even if parents give permission. We are all expected to accept the declared gender. But there are major problems with this. McHugh states: "When children who reported transgender feelings were tracked without medical or surgical treatment … 70%-80% of them spontaneously lost those feelings." Thankfully their bodies weren't altered when the transgender feelings were present. Yet Boston Children's Hospital is trying to treat supposedly transgendered prepubescent children "by administering puberty-delaying hormones to render later sex-change surgeries less onerous--even though the drugs stunt the children's growth and risk causing sterility" (ibid.).
McHugh also mentions the results of a long-term study, up to 30 years, that followed 324 people who had sex-reassignment surgery. "The study revealed that beginning about 10 years after having the surgery, the transgendered began to experience increasing mental difficulties. Most shockingly, their suicide mortality rose almost 20-fold above the comparable nontransgender population" (emphasis added).
"At the heart of the problem," McHugh concludes, "is confusion over the nature of the transgendered. 'Sex change' is biologically impossible. People who undergo sex-reassignment surgery do not change from men to women or vice versa. Rather, they become feminized men or masculinized women. Claiming that this is a civil-rights matter and encouraging surgical intervention is in reality to collaborate with and promote a mental disorder."
Breitbart notes that when the op-ed was originally published, "the left reacted in fury," some labeling McHugh's views "transphobic" and a form of "science denialism." Yet it is those who support transgenderism who are in denial of science and reality in their drive to completely redefine family relationships. And sadly, the public is more and more willing to comply. (Sources: Breitbart, New York Post , The Wall Street Journal .)

Editorial: Can Obamacare be repealed with the highway bill?

Editorial

Last week Senator Ted Cruz received flak for opposing the Export-Import Bank renewal with the Highway Bill. Now the Tea Party Patriots is proposing using that same Highway Bill as a vehicle to eliminate Obamacare. In a presidential election season and with both houses in GOP hands, would this work?

http://www.teapartypatriots.org/

Have you heard the latest about the Highway Bill in the Senate? Thanks to the tireless work of Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), we now have a very realistic shot of repealing Obamacare.
Call both of your Senators today and tell them to support Mike Lee's efforts to repeal Obamacare today!
Call 202-224-3121 and ask to be connected to your Senators' offices orvisit our website to lookup your Senators.
Yesterday the Senate rejected an amendment to the Highway Bill that would have fully repealed Obamacare. That amendment failed to reach the 60-vote threshold it needed to advance. But here's where things get interesting. Under the Senate rules, a Senator may refile the amendment on the basis that it is "germane" (or relevant) to the Highway Bill. The Chair of the Senate will most likely reject the amendment, arguing that an Obamacare repeal amendment is not related to the underlying bill. This is where we have a unique opportunity. Sen. Lee would formally object to the ruling, which allows a simple majority (only 51 votes) to overturn the decision of the chair.

This is a complicated procedural maneuver, but we are confident that we can win with the 51-vote threshold. Please call both of your United States Senators today and urge them to vote for Sen. Lee's appeal to overturn the Chair's decision and allow for another vote on the Obamacare repeal amendment.

Please call, email, and communicate on social media with both of your Senators throughout the day!

Our best chance to repeal Obamacare is TODAY!

In the current climate of constant threats of terrorist attacks, of anthrax scares and biotoxin fears, who could guess that a heat wave would hand France one of the greatest tragedies in its history? The official count is still unknown, but as of this writing, the death toll in France for the period of Aug. 1 to 15 was 11,435, and most victims were elderly. The country simply cannot afford to care for its senior citizens in the way that it should. Discussions are under way about the possibility of every worker donating one day's wage per year (by working through a national holiday) to generate emergency funding.
Alzheimer's will grow by 150 percent in the United Kingdom by 2050. By the same date, the number of people with Alzheimer's in the United States could reach 300 percent of today's numbers—that's up to 16 million Americans. This projection, based upon U.S. census data, comes from the Rush Institute on Healthy Aging.
Sheldon Goldberg, president and CEO of the U.S. Alzheimer's Association, warned: “If we don't find answers soon, it will be devastating on multiple fronts.” Unless advances in research produce effective treatments, the Rush Institute declared that the projected increase is enough to bankrupt the American Medicare system.
Meanwhile, in China economists blame the 3.7 percent shrinkage in Hong Kong's gross domestic product for the second quarter of the year on the SARS outbreak. Toronto also lost tens of millions of dollars in tourism revenues when the World Health Organization declared the city unsafe, due to a lengthy period of uncontained SARS infections there.
SARS is a pneumonia-like virus, believed to have “jumped” from animals to humans in the Guangdong province of China, where the illness claimed hundreds of victims. Recent investigations in the province revealed the presence of a variation of SARS in several test animals, as well as some healthy people. The people may not become ill themselves, but they are carriers of the disease.
Apart from the possibility of the introduction of a new strain of SARS, scientists are warning that the regional strain will most likely reappear when the next flu season begins.
The flu itself could become a bioterror weapon. Scientists from the University of Texas Health Science Center say that commonly known information from the genome of the 1918 flu epidemic could be used to create an even more deadly strain than that one, which took the lives of 20 to 40 million people.
Even in our modern world of advanced technology and medical science, we are ever vulnerable to common diseases. We need to be mindful of the fact that good health is a blessing from God, one that we cannot afford to take for granted. There is a direct correlation between our respect for and application of God's laws and the prosperity of our countries. As America rushes to distance itself from God's great laws, we would do well to take heed of His sober words in Leviticus 26:14-16 Leviticus 26:14-16 14 But if you will not listen to me, and will not do all these commandments; 15 And if you shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so that you will not do all my commandments, but that you break my covenant: 16 I also will do this to you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.
American King James Version×
.
“But if you do not obey Me, and do not observe all these commandments, and if you despise My statutes, or if your soul abhors My judgments, so that you do not perform all My commandments, but break My covenant, I also will do this to you: I will even appoint terror over you, wasting disease and fever which shall consume the eyes and cause sorrow of heart.”

Sodomy is defined in Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary as “carnal copulation in any of certain unnatural ways.” Clarke’s Standard Reference Dictionary (UK, 1982) defines it as “any sexual intercourse held to be abnormal, as between a person and an animal or between two persons of the same sex.”
When most people think of sodomy, they think of sexual acts between people of the same sex, but the legal definition is clearly broader than that. The Bible also shows us that the sins of Sodom were many. The Old Testament prophet Ezekiel described them as “pride, fullness of food, and abundance of idleness; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty and committed abomination before Me …” (Ezekiel 16:49-50 Ezekiel 16:49-50 49 Behold, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom, pride, fullness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. 50 And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.
American King James Version×
). Certainly, sexual sins were included among these.
The word sodomy comes from the biblical city of Sodom, notorious for its vice and corruption. Sodom, along with its sister city Gomorrah, were destroyed by God because of the sinfulness of its people.
You can read an account of the circumstances that led up to this destruction in Genesis 18 and 19.
When Abraham realized that God had determined to destroy the twin cities “because their sin [was] very grave” (Genesis 18:20 Genesis 18:20And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;
American King James Version×
), he appealed on their behalf, bargaining with God's messengers. He asked: “Would You also destroy the righteous with the wicked?” (verse 23). “Suppose there were fifty righteous within the city; would You also destroy the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous that were in it?” Abraham was assured that if there were 50 righteous left in the city, the city would be spared.
On second thoughts, Abraham realized that there might not be 50 righteous inhabitants left, so he asked again, this time wondering if the city would be spared if only 45 God-fearing citizens remained. He was assured the city would be spared. Eventually Abraham got down to 10. And the Lord said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of ten” (verse 32).
In the next chapter we see the cities destroyed. Clearly, there were not even 10 righteous people left.
The incident that preceded the final destruction of Sodom involved homosexual rape. When the two messengers from God were staying with Lot, “the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house. And they called to [Abraham's nephew] Lot and said to him, 'Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally [sexually]”. Rebutted, the men “pressed hard against the man Lot, and came near to break down the door” (verses 4-9).
Immediately after this incident, God took action to destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah (read the rest of the chapter). After witnessing their sin for a very long time, His patience had run out and He chose to remove them from the face of the earth.
Could the same fate befall the United States of America?
Since the “sexual revolution” of the 1960s, America and other Western nations have progressively moved further and further away from God and His standards of morality as defined in His Word, the Bible.
The sexual reforms of the '60s and subsequent decades have contributed greatly to the breakdown of the family, the increased spread of sexually transmitted diseases, millions of HIV/AIDS infections, an epidemic of drug-taking and increased crime and violence. Despite this fact, the greatest legal authorities in the land have reacted with yet another “reform” that takes the country further away from God’s laws for mankind.
As with Sodom and Gomorrah, when will God pull the plug on our immoral society?

During the first half of October 2013, another epic battle played out in Washington over the federal budget. Narrowly avoiding default, both sides decided to kick the can down the road—again. The contrast between those who believe government must provide ever more services and those who wonder how the nation will ever pay its mounting bills grew starkly defined.
Since the end of World War II, when the United States emerged as the world's greatest superpower, massive change has transformed the fabric of American society. A nation in which millions worked hard to defeat fascism and imperialism has turned into a nation increasingly on the dole.
As of early 2013 a staggering 160 million Americans (out of 325 million)—more than 49 percent—live in households receiving a monthly check from one or more government programs. Federal entitlements have expanded to include Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, student education loans, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, and a host of other programs.
Over the past five years these programs have cost taxpayers a shocking $3.7 trillion. This is more than the entire U.S. Gross National Product was in the early 1980s. It's more than five times what the U.S. government spent on NASA, education and transportation during the same period.
Let's take a closer look at America's shift to dependency and what it means for the nation.

Expanding programs, expanding fraud

It all began with the granddaddy of social programs, Social Security. Enacted in the depths of the Great Depression in 1933, the original aim was to set up a plan for older workers to contribute to their retirement.
But today's glut of programs bears little resemblance to the simple program President Franklin Roosevelt had in mind. Today more than 58 million Americans receive a check each month from the Social Security Administration—a number predicted to swell to more than 97 million by 2035.
Many government programs are known for fraud and abuse. One part of Social Security, the disability insurance program (SSDI), has grown especially fast in recent years. Originally intended to pay benefits to the truly disabled, the program is being investigated for fraudulent approvals, enabling perhaps millions of able-bodied Americans to receive monthly checks of up to $2,500 from the government.
While the vast majority of those receiving Social Security disability benefits qualify legally, fraud in the program has been well documented. A typical pattern involves older workers who have lost their jobs due to the recent recession. When unemployment benefits run out, the next logical step for many is to claim a disability that will keep federal checks coming. If the initial claim is denied, there are always lawyers with TV ads claiming to know just how to get those benefits coming.
But the problem doesn't stop there. Frequent exposés reveal thousands of other Americans fraudulently receiving benefits, using ruses such as the names of dead people or people who have left the country. It all adds up to billions in fraud and abuse annually.
Like other entitlements, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, more commonly known as the Food Stamp program, began with a lofty purpose. America has always had an underclass of truly poor people facing chronic hunger. The Food Stamp program was enacted to provide a nutritional “safety net” for these individuals.
But the Food Stamp program has exploded, like so many other federal entitlement programs. Since 2007, the program has mushroomed from a $35 billion outlay to more than $80 billion in 2012, with more than 45 million Americans now getting food stamps. Food stamp rolls are growing at 75 times the rate of new job creation!

Medicare and Medicaid explosion

Almost in lockstep with America's growing dependence on government-provided food is the growing dependence on free or reduced-price medical care. Medicaid, a combined federal-state program set up to provide health-care benefits to the poor, covered an estimated 82.5 million Americans, or 27 percent of the population, as of late 2011.
An additional 46.5 million were on the Medicare rolls for elderly health care and health-care supplements. That number is rising rapidly as millions of baby boomers reach retirement age.
Medicare rolls are growing due to an estimated 3.6 million retiring baby boomers being added each year. A continued soft economy, with higher than normal unemployment, is producing what some observers are calling a permanent underclass, most of whom rely on Uncle Sam for their health care.
Here, too, widespread fraud and corruption compounds the problem. Medicaid fraud, which usually involves a hospital, nursing home, health-care professional, ambulance service or pharmacy overbilling Medicare, has grown into a $30 billion problem, or roughly 10 percent of the program's cost. State-administered Medicaid programs are especially fraud-ridden. New York, for example, budgets more than $50 billion of its $121 billion state budget on the program, and estimates that fraud costs it as much as $18 billion of that amount.
Decades of dependence on Medicare and Medicaid helped pave the way for the newest health-care entitlement, the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare, the first major step towards instituting nationwide socialized medicine.
Working on a largely European model, Obamacare continues to remove health-care decisions from doctors and forces millions of basically healthy Americans to buy health insurance to extend coverage to some 42 million Americans who haven't been covered by any health insurance plan. To encourage participation, Americans earning up to four times the federal poverty level are to be given a federal subsidy to buy insurance.
The law's requirements have polarized Americans unlike virtually anything that has come before it. Millions resent being forced to buy health insurance or facing fines if they fail to do so. And other millions of insured citizens are likewise being forced to turn to government “health exchanges” for coverage at rates much higher than they were paying previously.

Why bother to work?

In the face of generous federal benefits, many Americans who lost jobs during the recession and slow recovery have basically given up looking for work. Some have apparently done the math, asking themselves why they should work when they can have as great or greater equivalent income with food stamps, free health care and unemployment benefits for up to two years.
So it's not surprising that the percentage of the adult population working has fallen to 63 percent, the lowest percentage since 1978. Over the past five years, more than 10 million U.S. adults have left the labor force. It's a bad downward trend, and many economists see no indication this is improving.
Economists blame failure to create jobs and the rapid pace of retirements of baby boomers as two reasons for the falling labor participation rate. And a third reason they now give is more Americans going on Social Security disability, with 8.8 million Americans receiving Social Security Disability benefits—a number that has doubled since 1995.
Could it be that many Americans have simply grown tired of working, or see not working as a more attractive financial alternative?

Major shifts in American attitudes

These trends reflect a fundamental change in attitude. A nation that traditionally prided itself on hard work and self-reliance now looks increasingly to Washington as the source for supplying all needs. Uncle Sam has become the “rich uncle” to many.
Seemingly lost in all this social change is the diminished role of the family. Since the dawn of civilization, people looked first to their family, and then to a lesser extent to their neighbors and community, for help when hungry or sick or destitute.
This strong family and community influence was long a part of America, when rural folks would assist each other in clearing land, building houses and raising crops. Families looked after not only their own, but others as well. If families had to leave home for a time, they could count on neighbors to look after their property.
But the central role of the family began to erode rapidly in the 20th century. Beginning with President Franklin Roosevelt's “New Deal” of the 1930s, American attitudes towards governmental assistance began to change. The Great Depression at that time disrupted the lives of millions, bringing hunger, deprivation, and the loss of homes, farms and businesses. As the Depression dragged on in the early 1930s, Americans began to look to government for a solution.
No longer was the role of the federal government limited to keeping the peace and maintaining national security. Now its job, in the eyes of millions, was also to stamp out poverty, provide old-age pensions and health care, pay for college educations, maintain a basic level of nutrition, support illegitimate children, and on and on. The increasing role of the federal government gained more traction with President Lyndon Johnson's “Great Society” of the 1960s, which was promoted as the way to eradicate poverty (in spite of almost $15 trillion spent on anti-poverty programs since then, the U.S. poverty rate remains essentially unchanged).
Over the past 30 to 40 years a country that once prided itself on self-reliance became addicted to government aid. A 2008 study by the Pew Research Center revealed a shift in preference toward a more socially activist role for the federal government, with millions seeing it as government's role to aid the disadvantaged.
The report also noted that this coincided with a diminished role of religion in daily life. More than half said the government should help more needy people even if it adds to the nation's debt. This was up from just 41 percent who felt this way in 1994.

Has America reached a tipping point?

Has America reached a tipping point? Is the nation's growing dependence on government programs—with half of American households getting a check from the government each month—at the point of no return?
At his inauguration in January 1961, newly elected President John F. Kennedy issued a famous challenge to his fellow Americans: “Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.” Sadly, millions have reversed that into “Ask not what you can do for your country—ask what your country can do for you.” And to them the answer is— plenty!
Free food, free housing, free cell phones, free education, free health care, free money, and on it goes. So long as it's free, why not?
But as the saying goes, there's no such thing as a free lunch. Eventually the bill comes due. America's national debt recently passed the $17 trillion mark—up from $10.6 trillion only five years earlier. But that figure pales in comparison to the federal government's total unfunded obligations for Medicare and Social Security, currently estimated at $43 trillion to as much as $126 trillion, depending on which set of economic assumptions are plugged in.
At the latter figure, each American taxpayer is on the hook for a staggering $1.1 million! But even at the lower number, each taxpayer's share is some $375,000.
Obviously this is an unsustainable path, driven by far too many people who feel entitled to “free” government benefits paid for by the government forcibly taking from their producing neighbors—and abetted by unscrupulous politicians and government officials who have learned that the sure way to get votes is by promising ever more benefits from the public treasury.
Such things are clearly not God's way. Yes, God commands love toward neighbor, and He instituted laws and instructions designed to care for those in difficult circumstances (see “Dependence, Independence and Helping Those in Need “).
But He surely doesn't endorse a society in which half the citizens live off the labors of the other half, with a government incurring massive and unsustainable debt that can realistically never be paid back. This is nothing more than government-endorsed (and enforced) theft—a blatant breaking of the Eighth Commandment, “You shall not steal” (Exodus 20:15 Exodus 20:15You shall not steal.

).
Where will this end? Sadly, without a major change of heart, the United States will follow the pattern of other great empires that have gone before—disappearing, as the saying goes, not with a bang but with a whimper, victim of its citizens' own spiritual blindness and greed.
