House OKs Vote on Stupak Amendment to Cut Abortion Funding From Health Care

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- In a surprise move after hours of tumultuous negotiations, the House Rules Committee, very early Saturday morning, approved rules for debate on the pro-abortion health care bill. Although it appeared Speaker Nancy Pelosi would deny one, it allows a vote on an amendment to remove abortion funding.
Pelosi's hand appeared to have been forced when pro-abortion House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer announced earlier in the day that she did not have enough votes to pass the bill because of objections from pro-life Democrats.
The committee okayed a Rule that allows the House to vote on the Stupak amendment, offered by pro-life Rep. Bart Stupak, a Michigan Democrat, to the health care reform legislation.
Stupak had dozens of Democrats who threatened to vote against the Rule and the bill if he did not get a vote on his amendment. If the amendment is defeated, Stupak and pro-life Democrats will likely still oppose the bill because of the abortion funding.
The bill, HR 3962, currently funds abortions in two ways -- by allowing the public option (or government-run health care program) to pay for abortions and by allowing the affordability credits the government would give to consumers to be used to pay for health care plans that fund abortions.
The Stupak amendment would apply the fundamental principles of the Hyde amendment, which has long prohibited abortion funding under the Medicaid and HHS programs, to the health care reform bill and essentially prohibit all government funding of abortion under it.
Douglas Johnson, the legislative director of the National Right to Life Committee, told LifeNews.com after the committee vote on the Rule that the vote on the Stupak could be the most important abortion-related vote cast in Congress since Roe.
"This will be one of the most important roll call votes that U.S. House members ever casts on a pro-life issue," he said. "Any lawmaker who votes against the Stupak-Pitts Amendment is, in effect, voting in favor of establishing a federal government program that will directly fund abortion on demand, with federal funds."
Johnson urged all pro-life advocates to call both the Washington and in-state offices of their representatives in the U.S. House to urge support for the Stupak-Pitts Amendment.
The vote on the Stupak amendment could decide the fate of the health care reform bill -- because das many as 40 pro-life Democrats could vote against the bill if the Stupak amendment is not adopted and the abortion funding remains.
The House Rules Committee vote came after a long night of negotiation and discussions that, at one point, seemed as if they had gone out of control and would have resulted in the allowance of a limited amendment to only remove abortion funding out of the public option but not the affordability credits.
Stupak told Fox News late in the day that he had "not received any assurances by the Speaker that (the amendment) would be made in order."
"I have not had a deal with the Speaker," he said before the committee allowed a vote on his amendment. "If our amendment is made in order, I believe it will pass. " We've had so many agreements, I don't believe anything unless it's on paper."
Abortion advocates in the House were livid that Stupak's amendment would get a vote.
"There will be no abortion, not just with public funds, but with private funds under the public option, and that's not acceptable," Rep. Diana DeGette, a Colorado Democrat, claimed.
And Cecile Richards, the president of Planned Parenthood, fired off a press release blasting the deal top Democrats made with Stupak and his pro-life Democratic coalition.
She claimed the amendment would force private insurance companies to drop abortion coverage even though "the majority of private health insurance plans currently offer abortion coverage" -- a statistic that has been challenged as untrue.
She said the Stupak amendment "upends the carefully crafted compromise in the House bill and unambiguously restricts women's access to care."
The allowance of a vote on the Stupak amendment came after the nation's Catholic bishops delivered a final letter to members of Congress on Friday asking for a vote.
Doerflinger, associate director of the bishops conference's pro-life office, told the Washington Post that the bishops would drop their objections to the health care bill if the Stupak amendment is added and all abortion funding is removed.
"We become enthusiastic advocates for moving forward with health care reform," he said, if that happens.
The Post described the chaotic scene as advocates on both sides of the abortion divide sought to allow or prevent a vote on the Stupak amendment.
"Negotiations between the two camps consumed much of the day Friday, as representatives from the warring factions shuttled into and out of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office just off the Capitol Rotunda. A deal was finally struck shortly before 9:30 p.m., sending Stupak to the House Rules Committee to request official permission to offer his amendment -- permission that was finally granted shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday," it indicated.
"After the deal was struck, annoyed pro-choice leaders filed out of Pelosi's office to confer with their supporters," it concluded.
ACTION: Contact your members of the House of Representatives immediately at http://www.House.gov and urge a YES vote on the Stupak amendment to stop abortion funding in the health care bill. Also, urge your members to vote NO on the health care bill, HR 3962, if the Stupak amendment is defeated.

The Washington Post's Karen DeYoung and Walter Pincus bring us a story this morning about the great success America is having against al Qaeda in Afghanistan in 2009.This would be great news, of course, and I hope it is true. But the timing of this sudden burst of optimism about our troops' increased ability to suppress bin Laden's fanatics is just too convenient for those urging the president to reject General McChyrstal's recommendations concerning more troops for the Afghan theater.If al Qaeda is truly on its back and unable to regroup, then the case for abandoning Afghanistan to the Taliban gets easier for the president to make. If, on the other hand and as almost everyone prior to today has stated, the return of the Taliban to power in Kabul or even to unmolested authority in other areas of the country will increase the ability of al Qaeda to organize and launch attacks against the U.S., then the McChyrstal recommendations should be adopted and quickly.We know the president has embraced appeasement in all but name vis-a-vis Iran and its nuclear ambitions. The New York Times' John Burns worries that the U.S. policy in Iraq is leading to growing instability there, which is another example of the roll out of an appeasement policy towards any force hostile to the U.S. And now today's WaPo story suggests others are pushing the president towards a three-front appeasement policy, which would mean the gradual abandonment of the battle for Afghanistan in addition to withdrawal from Iraq and surrender to Iran's ambitions. Make that a four-front appeasement policy, given the president's abandonment of missile defense plans in Poland and the Czech Republic in an attempt to please Vladimir Putin.Back to the '90s' "holiday from history," which of course led to 9/11.

All throughout the recent Tea Party Express national tour we kept receiving emails and phone calls from people around the nation who lived far away from the route our buses took across America. We vowed at the time to keep the Tea Party Express effort alive – and that’s exactly what we are doing.
It is our pleasure to announce the “Tea Party Express: Countdown to Judgment Day” which will cross the nation from coast-to-coast, border-to-border October 25th – November 11th — 1 year ahead of the November 2010 congressional elections… or as our Czarina of the tea party movement, Amy Kremer, likes to refer to as “Judgment Day.” The Tea Party Express will kick-off the tour with a rally in San Diego, California on October 25th and wind up the tour with a rally in Orlando, Florida on November 11th (Veteran’s Day).
This won’t just be a continuation of the tour we just completed. We will be having a lot of special surprises and additions as we grow this effort — and continue the fight against government-run healthcare, Cap & Trade, bailouts, out-of-control deficit spending and the growth in the size and intrusiveness of government.

President Obama’s campaign organization, Organizing for America, goes way, way too far.
Team Obama wants to use 9/11 to push back against protesters, referred to as “Right-Wing Domestic Terrorists” by calling Senators in support of the Obamacare public government option.
Today, the Obama campaign folks sent out a notice to “grassroots” supporters about the planned 9/11″health care organizing event”:

What day? Our US Senators return to DC the Tues after Labor Day. That next FRIDAY, Sep 11, is Patriot Day, designated in memory of the nearly three thousand who died in the 9/11 attacks.
All 50 States are coordinating in this – as we fight back against our own Right-Wing Domestic Terrorists who are subverting the American Democratic Process, whipped to a frenzy by their Fox Propaganda Network ceaselessly re-seizing power for their treacherous leaders.
The offensive notice has been scrubbed from the Organizing for America website, but I was able to get the following screenshot [click for larger image].

How dare they? Don’t contemplate the nearly 3,000 innocent souls murdered by the terrorists. Instead, politicize a day of remembrance. Whatever happenedto what presidential candidate Obama said on September 11, 2008:

What happened to all that hope?

Please keep in mind that the illegal alien supporters have been studying ALIPAC closely for several years now because we helped hand them stunning defeats of their AMNESTY bills in 2006 and 2007.

Since that time they have invested millions and hired top minds in the fields of activism and web marketing. They have deployed their counter measures based off of their research and study of what many of you, or your predecessors, here at ALIPAC have done.

WHILE THERE WILL BE MULTIPLE LAYERS OF ACTIVISM GOING ON HERE IN THE DISCUSS GROUPS, AN EMAIL ALERT BLAST SHOULD BECOME YOUR TOP PRIORITY.

Step 2 Prioritize: ALIPAC wants our activist to be constantly involved in their own activism online and in their local communities. The battle against illegal immigration is far too complex and vast for our central organization to handle alone. An ALIPAC activist should seek a good blend between personal activism pursuits and ALIPAC's planned focus campaigns. However, please realize that when a call for help is posted in Announcements and/or goes out by e-mail, everyone is expected to orient on those goals. Step 3 Walk vs. Talk, and getting the work done. As in most things in life, when the tough work comes around there are certain people that will be scarce. We have seen it a million times here at ALIPAC. Some people are all about talk, instead of the walk. ALIPAC is for the work horses, not the show horses. Power goes to those who show up. Influence goes to those who get the work done. It's not like ALIPAC asks people to get up and lift weights, carry boxes, or run around the block. Most of our requests involve a few dollars or a few minutes of time and short conversations and pushes of buttons. Is this really to much to ask of anyone to save our nation from what illegal immigration is doing to us? When the alerts are called, we need you to fall into formation, learn and know what to do, make posts in the open to show you and others you are responding to our requests. If you fail to muster behind our email alerts or just cherry pick the ones you really get excited about then our team is going to get clobbered and our win record is going to fall into complete disarray. It is fine to have everyone running around doing their own thing, but when the alerts are called we must fly in formation or the Open Borders Lobby is going to plow us under. Our opposition has vast amounts of money and influence. We have the numbers and favor of the public. Should our responsive numbers fall, we are lost and will lose terribly. The outcome depends on how many of you focus when called.

Step 4: Checking In We need more of our supporters to use, read, know, and utilize the information and resources they find here at ALIPAC. ALIPAC.us maintains the largest archive of information in existence. At a bare minimum, we want our supporters to check and read the homepage articles every few days, if not daily. We want people to discuss, forward, circulate, and post links into the materials we post on the homepage. If you have a little more time, please review the Discussion Groups announcements and polls section or the news section for more involvement. If you have the time and motivation, please explore our Discussion Groups area and consider becoming a core online activist who interacts with the ALIPAC website on a strong and regular basis.

“The Democrats need to reorganize their whole party,” I once charitably remarked to my elderly Comanche mother. “Well, they’ll have to get rid of Ted Kennedy,” she replied. “Get rid of the Kennedys.”
But, as Chris Matthews has already opined, Obama is the last Kennedy brother. Why, we’ll never be rid of the Kennedys. The liberal Democrats idolize them, dead or alive. Ted himself bestowed the mantle on “Obama” back in January, 2008, after Caroline Kennedy had already endorsed the alien. Liberals swooned. And CBS/AP reported:

Two generations of Kennedys - the Democratic Party’s best-known political family - endorsed Barack Obama for president on Monday, with Sen. Edward M. Kennedy calling him a “man with extraordinary gifts of leadership and character,” a worthy heir to his assassinated brother.
So, all the treachery, the Communism, the anti-Americanism, the sheer self-aggrandizing liberalism of a career liar we associate with the alien “Barack Hussein Obama” (Barry Soetoro) is to be attributed to John F. Kennedy? This is Ted Kennedy’s assessment, declaration, and last will and testament?

Ted Kennedy, who evaded conviction for murder (in the Chappaquiddick case), is now himself removed from the scene. At the age of 77, Ted Kennedy passed on.

Perfect timing for Obama. “Providential,” the Democrat devotees are sure. They can try to pass the health reform bill now under the ’saintly’ auspices of Ted. It will be “The Ted Kennedy Health Reform Bill.”
Himself the heir of a big-time Irish ganster’s bootlegger fortune (according to Dope, Inc.) Ted Kennedy was always bent on twisting American values into some demented European socialist labor uprising. The multi-millionaire of ill-gotten gain was always campaigning for the ‘little guy,’ the ‘forgotten worker,’ as if the American population was in some perpetual state of inebriation after working in a factory for 16 hours–much like the Irish immigrants of the 19th century.

What a legacy, indeed. There’s ethnic pride for you, for weal or woe.
But I don’t rejoice in his death. I lament his life. I don’t dance on his grave. That’s for Democrats–who are constantly looking for a new gig to prop up their boy Barry (who is constantly sinking). I decry the influence of Ted Kennedy’s life. He represents everything that’s really un-American. His political concepts were as alien as Barry’s professional name, “Barack Hussein Obama.” And, through blind emotionalism and sentimentalism, Ted Kennedy’s influence will remain strong, no doubt.

However, the way Barry Soetoro burns up ‘political capital,’ the way he foolishly squanders the unlimited powers given him by the Democrats, perhaps Ted Kennedy’s actual political influence will wane after all. Barry wastes political favor as profligately as he spends imaginary money. He is immature to the point of abandonment. He has no experience whatsoever as a leader, or even a politician. He first road the waves created by white liberals for the American Negro. Now he has to make his own waves–borrowing completely from white liberals.

And yet he hates whites. I’m sure Barry hates the Kennedys. His appointment of someone like Eric Holder as Attorney General shows just how deep his hated is of the white race, of white America, and of white government. Barry and company are doing everything they can to destroy what white men have made. Their target is the United States of America. That is the prize for the black power mongers. That is the goal of the black politician: destroy what white men created. “Change” is the word they use, but they mean seek and destroy. It is black revenge. Black people at large may not ascribe to any such demonic purpose, but, they seem to be blindly following, like a giant herd of black sheep.

Ted Kennedy is gone, but, having blessed Barry Soetoro, the alien, (a.k.a. “Barack Hussein Obama”), Kennedy’s true values are apparent. His true legacy is evident. This is an awesome epigraph. Yet, is it obviously true and appropriate. It his his last will and testament: Barry’s pure racist anti-Americanism is the legacy of the Kennedy family. It is low, mean, and in the street, with the European gangster origins of the Kennedy family.

EL PASO -- Two gay men kissed at a Chico's Tacos restaurant, prompting guards to eject them and a police officer to endorse their ouster.Civil-rights lawyers say the security staff was out of line. Police, though, contend that a business such as a restaurant can refuse service to anybody, any time.In all, five men were ordered to leave the restaurant. They say they were forced out by homophobic guards."It was a simple kiss on the lips," said Carlos Diaz de Leon, a gay man who was part of the group.He called police at 12:30 a.m. June 29 because he said the guards and restaurant had discriminated against the group after two of his friends kissed in public.The five men, all gay, were placing their order at the Chico's Tacos restaurant on Montwood when the men kissed. All five sat down, but the two guards at the restaurant told them to leave.De Leon quoted one of the guards as saying he didn't allow "that faggot stuff" in the restaurant.De Leon said they refused to leave and called police for help. He said an officer arrived about an hour later in response to calls from his group and the guards.As they waited for police, the guards directed other anti-gay slurs at them, he said.Already angry at the guards, de Leon and his group became angrier at the two police officers who arrived."I went up to the police officer to tell him what was going on, and he didn't want to hear my side," de Leon said. "He wanted to hear the security guard's sidefirst."Police declined to identify the officers who responded, but department spokesman Javier Sambrano described one officer as relatively inexperienced.De Leon said the officer told the group it was illegal for two men or two women to kiss in public. The five men, he said, were told they could be cited for homosexual conduct -- a law the U.S. Supreme Court ruled unconstitutional in 2003 in Lawrence v. Texas.That same year, the El Paso City Council approved an ordinance banning discrimination based on sexual orientation by businesses open to the public.An assistant manager at Chico's Tacos declined to comment Wednesday, except to say the owners of the restaurant were out of town and could not be reached. An official with All American International Security, the firm contracted by Chico's Tacos to supply guards, said one member of the security crew was contacting a lawyer. He would say no more.El Paso police Detective Carlos Carrillo said a more appropriate charge for what happened at Chico's Tacos would probably be criminal trespass."The security guard received a complaint from some of the customers there," Carrillo said. "Every business has the right to refuse service. They have the right to refuse service to whoever they don't want there. That's their prerogative."Briana Stone, a lawyer with the Paso del Norte Civil Rights Project, disagreed.She said the city anti-discrimination ordinance protects people on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation in public places. Perhaps more troubling, she said, was that the police officer chose not to enforce that ordinance and might have contributed to discrimination."This is such a blatant refusal to uphold the law on account of discrimination," she said. "The result is devastating. The Police Department is allowing that and even participating in it by refusing to enforce an anti-discrimination ordinance, which is what their job is."Lisa Graybill, legal director for the ACLU of Texas, said that businesses can ask patrons to leave for lewd conduct, but that those standards would have to apply to all customers."If a straight couple wouldn't have gotten kicked out for it," she said, "a gay couple shouldn't."The police officers involved did not file a report about the confrontation at Chico's Tacos. Carrillo said no report was made because officers thought the situation was under control and neither side requested a written account of the incident.De Leon said he and his friends left the restaurant after an officer threatened to issue a citation for "homosexual conduct."

What happened to the Age of Obama?Glancing over the New York Times Book Review Sunday, one finds three of the top four non-fiction best-sellers were written by conservatives—

columnist Michelle Malkin,

talk-show host Mark Levin

and Fox News contributor Dick Morris.

At No. 10, in its 40th week on the list, is Bill O'Reilly's memoir.

No. 1 best-seller in paperback Glenn Beck's Common Sense.

Moreover, the altarpiece of the transformational presidency, universal health insurance, is on life support, as huge crowds pour into town hall meetings to denounce it. Responding to the protests, the Obamaites have dumped the end-of-life counselors (aka "Death Panels") and declared the government option expendable.But what are we to make of these "evil-mongers" of Harry Reid's depiction, these "mobs" of "thugs" organized by K Street lobbyists and "right-wing extremists" who engage in "un-American" activity at town hall meetings? Surely, all Americans must detest them.To the contrary. According to a Pew poll, by 61 percent to 34 percent, Americans think the protesters are behaving properly. Gallup found that by 34 percent to 21 percent Americans identify with them. For these folks at the town hall meetings are not overprivileged Ivy League brats seizing campus buildings and holding the dean hostage. They look and talk just like them.What President Obama is losing is not the far right but the center of the country. Nor is this the first time liberals have misread America.During the 1968 Democratic convention, liberals sided with the antiwar demonstrators in Grant Park. And the country sided with the Chicago cops who went into the park and gave them a good thrashing.In 1969, the national press was writing that President Nixon must yield to the hundreds of thousands ringing the White House. Nixon went on national TV to call on the Silent Majority to stand by him.They did, for four years.One recalls Sen. Ed Muskie blurting out, after being crushed in the Florida primary by George Wallace, that he didn't know there were that many racists in Florida. That was the end of Ed. And in the fall, the Floridians flooded to Nixon, who did not insult them.After Nixon rolled up his 49-state triumph, Pauline Kael, movie critic at the New Yorker, is said to have expressed disbelief: "I don't know how Nixon won. No one I know voted for him."George H.W. Bush never saw the rebellion of 1992 coming and watched Ross Perot waltz off with a third of his 1988 voters.The anger in Middle America today looks much like what erupted in the NAFTA debate of 1993 and the amnesty debate of 2007.The difference: Republican leaders stood with Washington then, for NAFTA and amnesty. This time, the party leaders are with the people, and should do the people's will.Seven months into the Age of Obama, the GOP has been given an opportunity to regain the allegiance of the voters John McCain lost with his embrace of NAFTA and amnesty, and his dash to Washington to convince Republicans to give Hank Paulson $700 billion to bail out Wall Street.For these protesters are not so much being drawn to the GOP as being driven to it. The manic assaults by Democrats and liberal commentators and columnists on the protesters as "un-American," "birthers," "racists," "mobs" and "evil-mongers" has enraged and united them and cost Obama much of his support in Middle AmericaDoes the left not realize that, while four in five Republicans say the protesters are behaving appropriately, 64 percent of moderates and 40 percent of Democrats agree with those Republicans?We are also learning that Republicans have not been hurt by their opposition to the stimulus bill or cap-and-trade. The country has come to agree with the GOP.Nor was the party hurt when, by four to one, its senators voted against Ms. Affirmative Action, Sonia Sotomayor. Nor was it hurt by standing with Sgt. Crowley when Obama rushed to denounce the Cambridge cop for acting "stupidly" in arresting the Harvard professor who got in his face. Obama's support among Africans-Americans remains solid. His support among the white working and middle class is sinking.

Increasingly, Obama is being perceived as a man of the left and Republicans as the bulwark against a lurch to the left. Democrats may denounce Republicans as the Party of "No"—but the nation seems to be saying "Yes" to the Party of "No."In his new memoir, "Encounters," conservative scholar Dr. Paul Gottfried writes of a 1993 gathering, hosted by this writer, where libertarian legend Murray Rothbard, columnist Sam Francis and that founding father of postwar conservatism, Dr. Russell Kirk, went at it over the role of the populist right in the conservative movement.Though they vehemently disagreed, each man represented an essential element of a center-right coalition. As for the protesters, surely Thomas Jefferson was more right than Harry Reid, when he wrote to James Madison, "A little rebellion now and then is a good thing and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical."

Obama Admin Used Pro-Abortion, Conspiracy Sites to Say Pro-Lifers Extremists

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The results of an organization's Freedom of Information Act request reveal the Obama administration relied on pro-abortion and conspiracy theory web sites to compile its report saying pro-life advocates may be "right-wing extremists."
In April, the Obama administration came under fire for releasing a document claiming pro-life people may engage in violence or extremism.

The Department of Homeland Security warned law officials across the country about a supposed rise in "right-wing extremist activity," saying the poor economy and presence of a black president could spark problems.
According to the Washington Times, a footnote attached to the nine-page report from the Homeland Security Office of Intelligence and Analysis say the activities of pro-life advocates is included in "right-wing extremism in the United States.”
"It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single-issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration," the warning said.
In response to the report, the conservative group Americans for Limited Government filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request demanding to know how DHS had arrived at that conclusion.
The group calls the DHS response "stunning" because officials admit that they relied on a range of web sites, including mainstream media web pages, to compile the report.

"As it turns out, Janet Napolitano’s DHS did not conduct even the most rudimentary research or investigation. It did no statistical analysis. It did not even bother to interview those it accused and allow them the opportunity to defend themselves," the group said in a statement today.

"Instead, in what should send shockwaves throughout the nation, DHS functionaries simply cruised the Internet (in tin-foil hats, no doubt) and relied entirely upon some of the most disreputable sites on the web to stage its attack upon its 'rightwing' targets," ALG added.

The web site listed the most on which the Obama administration compiled its report is whatdoesitmean.com -- a conspiracy theory web site that contends the government of the United States has been in direct contact with extra-terrestrial aliens through sophisticated radio waves.
Obama officials also relied on the pro-abortion blog Huffington Post and the Southern Poverty Law Center, a pro-abortion group, to compile the information in the report.

"During the Watergate hearings nearly three decades ago, Howard Baker said that the pivotal question for Richard Nixon was, 'What did he know, and when did he know it?'" ALG said in response. "Now, a similar question must be asked of Barack Obama: When did he know, and why didn't he stop it?"
The group said the response to its FOIA request "reveals that his Department of Homeland Security violated the trust of the American people in ways never even imagined possible by those whose liberty it has placed in jeopardy."
"And the President now needs to come clean and tell the American people when he learned about this horrifying attack on personal freedom and why he did not intervene to end the assault," it concluded.

In Standish, Mich., site of a nearly vacant prison, residents are beginning to realize that the Obama Administration is serious about bringing terrorists to the United States, where they will quickly achieve the rights that should be reserved ONLY for Americans and those legally here. Jennifer Granholm, the governor of Michigan, fears for her political life. She has been desperately seeking an alternative to the Obama plan, such as California or Pennsylvania sending prisoners to the Standish correctional facility. With recent news that California can’t afford to pay the costs of housing their inmates in Michigan, the governor is running out of ideas. Fortunately, residents of Standish are starting to recognize that it isn’t worth the risk of bringing more than 230 of the most dangerous Islamic radicals in the world to a small town that could be potentially vulnerable. Not only will these Islamic extremists try to recruit from within the prison population, think of the undesirable elements that will come to town to be close to these murderous cut-throats.
In Standish, Mich., restaurant owner David Munson is organizing a community forum to oppose the potential transfer of prisoners from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to the local prison, which is facing budget cuts and likely to shut it down. "We don't want the Guantanamo people there," he told FOXNews.com. "And we felt like the situation was moving way too quickly to bring the Guantanamo people here."

FOX NEWS 8/18/2009 Obama is trying to shove Gitmo on America without listening to the opposition from the American people, just like he did with the bailouts, the take-over of the auto industry, the trillion dollars of wasteful spending and now his health insurance bill that would lead to a complete federalization of medicine. Too fast, no accountability, no communication with stakeholders, like the American people who might be under attack, and no consideration of the danger posed by these detainees. We can choose to put our own national security at risk, or we can continue to hold the terrorists at Gitmo, where an ideal facility has been built that abides by all international laws and is tailor-made for the purpose of housing these evil terrorists. The choice seems obvious: If it’s not BROKEN, don’t try to FIX IT! The only reason Obama has for doing this is to appease his fringe left-wing constituency, which would like to see the terrorists go free, and to reassure weak-kneed European governments that America would rather be an appeaser than a strong leader. But we cannot do it alone. We need your support so we can keep the fight going before it is too late and terrorists are literally on your doorstep.

The FOX article says that the organizer of today’s town hall meeting was an early supporter of bringing the terrorists over to Standish, but after talking to Representative Pete Hoekstra, he changed his mind.
Hoekstra, he said, told him the presence of Gitmo detainees could endanger the lives of prison guards and their families as well as the entire community, which would become the target of jihadists.Earlier this week, Hoekstra said that Obama’s administration has been making wild claims to the locals, trying to sell them on the idea that they will reap massive economic benefits from housing the terrorists. His stimulus plan has already been proven to be a failure, just a big waste of taxpayer money. Now he is trying to bamboozle Americans into thinking it is good for the economy to have terrorists in our country.
Last week, the Michigan Republican sent letters to Attorney General Eric Holder and Defense Secretary Robert Gates, asking them to allow him to lead a delegation of state officials and media to the Guantánamo prison to gain a better understanding of associated risks. But he said he hasn’t heard back from either of them. “I’m getting a little frustrated with the administration,” Hoekstra said. “They’re making all kinds of promises and ‘commitments’ to local officials that they’re not willing to share with Members of Congress. I think it’s flat out wrong.”

Health care a divisive issue? No way. Not when you ask the right questions.
Fully 80 percent of Americans say they don’t want illegal aliens to be covered by government subsidized health insurance. A Rasmussen Poll shows only 11 percent supported it. A full 70% said that it would be a dealbreaker.
Even the Wall Street Journal’s Miriam Jordan, winner of VDARE.COM’s 2008 Worst Immigration Reporter Award, has been compelled to acknowledge the issue’s power: [Illegal Immigration Enters the Health-Care Debate In California, Funding Is at Stake for a Clinic That Treats Patients No Matter Their Status; An Issue 'No One Wants to Touch', August 15, 2009].
To quote Washington Watcher on VDARE.com: "Not wanting to be completely at odds with the American people, when Barack Obama was asked by Katie Couric if he thought illegal aliens should be covered, he first said 'no'". But then he weaseled out:

And we’ve got legal residents or citizens who are eligible for the plan. And I want a comprehensive immigration plan that creates a pathway to achieve that.”
(VDARE.COM emphasis.) Note Obama’s implication: legal immigrants are welcome to whatever health care benefits are available.
But here’s the problem: the long-term budget crisis is essentially a health care crisis—and neither crisis can be resolved without curbing legal immigration.
Two recent reports present the basic facts.
First, the Congressional Budget Office's latest long-term budget forecast estimates that federal spending for Medicare and Medicaid alone will rise from 5.3% of the Gross Domestic Product this year to 6.4% in 2020 and 10% in 2035.
According to the CBO, and rather surprisingly, most of this growth is accounted for by increased spending per beneficiary as a result of improved techniques, rather than the aging of the population.
Second, a Pew Foundation study (see table below) finds that new (post-2005) immigrants and their U.S.-born children and grandchildren will account for 82 percent of U.S. population growth through mid-century.
The 1990 immigration law supposedly "capped" legal immigration at 700,000 people a year. Yet, for technical reasons, there have been only two years in which legal immigration has been below that level since 1990.
In 2006, 2007, and 2008 the number of people granted permanent resident status was 1,266,129; 1,052,417; and 1,107,126, respectively.
These totals comprise the largest influx of legal immigrants since the post-IRCA amnesty spike of the early 1990s—which reflected the 1986 amnestying of illegal aliens already here.
Let’s be cock-eyed optimists and assume illegal immigration is halted entirely (but the illegal stock here is not deported, and their children are still treated as anchor babies). That would leave native-born Americans, plus new legal immigrants and their U.S.-born descendants, to increase the health care rolls. Under that scenario, the immigrant-related share of U.S. population growth declines—but only to a still-astonishing 78 percent:

Health care is more than just a federal budget issue. It burdens the entire economy, as evidenced by the fact that total spending on health care—Medicare, Medicaid and all other public and private spending—has doubled over the last 30 years, to a current level of about 16% of GDP. By mid-century CBO estimates that this percentage will reach 37 percent of GDP.
In other words, 21 percent of 2050’s GDP will be needed just to accommodate the increase in health care costs between now and then. In today’s economy, that translates to an added $3.0 trillion of health care expenses.
How much of the increase will be due to legal immigration? There are many moving parts to any such estimate. New immigrants are younger than natives, but they also have more children. It’s not at all clear that their fertility rates will fall to that of natives. And new immigrants eventually become old immigrants.
We can cut through the complexity by sticking to the basics.
If legal immigrants’ impact on health care equals their projected impact on population growth, they will account for 78 percent of the rise in such costs between now and 2050. Under this scenario 16.4 percent (78 percent of 21 percent) of GDP in 2050 will be needed just to cover the rise in health care costs caused by new (post-2005) legal immigration. (This includes not only caring for the new immigrants, but for their US-born children and grandchildren.)
In today’s economy that’s the equivalent of $2.3 trillion in added spending. By comparison, the federal budget deficit for FY2009 is estimated to be $1.8 trillion.
If you cut that in half, say, because new immigrants are younger than native-born Americans, the excess burden imposed on the American taxpayer falls—but only to 8.2 percent of 2050 GDP.
In today’s economy, that translates into immigrants causing $1.2 trillion in added spending—equivalent to two-thirds of the projected deficit.
These are gross amounts. And, of course, as immigration enthusiasts constantly remind us, immigrants pay taxes too.
But not as much—federal health care, and government programs of all sorts, are still a net transfer to them.
One reason for this: because immigrants earn less, they pay less tax. In 2008, Median weekly earnings of immigrant workers were 20% below native-born Americans—and 24.5 percent below earnings of white non-Hispanic native-born American whites ($595/wk for immigrants vs. $744/wk for all native-born Americans and $788/wk. for native whites.) Foreign-born males earned 27 percent less than their native-born American counterparts.
And as immigrants get older, they seem to fall further behind natives. In 2008, for example, median earnings of foreign-born workers age 16 to 24 were 89.1 percent of the earnings of native-born workers in that age bracket. Among workers aged 55 to 64, immigrants earned only 77.9 percent of natives in that age bracket earned.
Another snapshot of greater immigrant dependency: Medicaid recipiency rates. Medicaid, the federal government’s health program aimed at the poor, is a pure transfer payment, unlike Medicare—there are no payroll tax contributions from recipients. In 2007, recipiency rates were:

24.4%: all immigrants
28.1% Hispanic immigrants
14.7%: all natives
11.5%: non-Hispanic white natives

Obviously, if immigrants are in the U.S. legally, it will be very difficult to deny them services extended to the native-born. But this inevitably means that U.S. taxpayers will be subsidizing the legal immigrant presence.
It’s a painful paradox. It’s one reason Milton Friedman, Nobel Laureate and clearly the outstanding economist of the twentieth century, told Peter Brimelow in one of their interviews in Forbes Magazine "It's just obvious that you can't have free immigration and a welfare state." [Forbes Magazine, December 29, 1997].
There is only one way to stop Obamacare from being yet another transfer program forcing American taxpayers to subsidize immigrants: an immediate and permanent immigration moratorium.

On Monday's CBS Evening News, correspondent Sharyl Attkisson filed a report highlighting the recent defections of thousands of AARP members to the more conservative American Seniors Association (ASA), because of the perceived support by the AARP for ObamaCare. The report recounted that Obama recently had to correct a claim that the AARP supports his plan, while some are suspicious that the group may support the President privately, but are unwilling to admit to doing so publicly.
Substitute anchor Maggie Rodriguez noted that Obama had to backtrack on claiming AARP support as she introduced the story: "President Obama once thought he had the AARP on board, as he put it, on his plan for health care reform, but he has since had to back off on that claim."

Attkisson started by relating that many AARP members have recently left the group, with a considerable number flocking to the ASA: "CBS News has learned that up to 60,000 people have cancelled their AARP membership since July 1 angered over the group's position on health care. ... Many are switching to the American Seniors Association, a group that calls itself the conservative alternative."
Attkisson soon got to the controversy over whether the AARP really supports Obama on health care reform or not. After a clip of Obama claiming that the seniors group was "on board," the CBS correspondent continued: "The AARP called the President's statements 'inaccurate,' saying it hasn't endorsed any plan or bill. Some were left with the feeling that AARP was waffling."
Then came a soundbite of former AARP member Elaine Guardani voicing her suspicions: "I feel that they’re supporting it through the back door and telling their members that they’re not through the front door."
Citing an interview with AARP official Cheryl Matheis, Attkisson suggested there may be some truth to this theory since Matheis did not voice disagreement with Obama's proposals: "Yet the AARP’s Cheryl Matheis couldn't find anything to quibble with, including the Medicare cuts which she says will not affect benefits. So is there anything in President Obama's plan that you don't like?"

MAGGIE RODRIGUEZ: President Obama once thought he had the AARP on board, as he put it, on his plan for health care reform, but he has since had to back off on that claim. The AARP is a powerful lobby for seniors. It has 40 million members with an average age of 64, most of whom vote. But tens of thousands of them don't like the overhaul plans, and that's created a problem for the organization that represents them. Sharyl Attkisson has this exclusive report.

SHARYL ATTKISSON: CBS News has learned that up to 60,000 people have cancelled their AARP membership since July 1 angered over the group's position on health care. Elaine Guardani has been with AARP for 14 years.

ELAINE GUARDANI, FORMER AARP MEMBER: I'm extremely disappointed in the AARP.
ATTKISSON: Retired nurse Dale Anderson, 12 years.

DALE ANDERSON, FORMER AARP MEMBER: I don't want to be connected with AARP.

ATTKISSON: Last week alone, they added more than 5,000 new members. Our camera was there Friday when the mail came.

BARTON, READING LETTER: It's nice to see that someone still thinks we senior citizens are not idiots.

ATTKISSON: Letters were filled with cut up AARP cards.

BARTON: I think that probably the seniors are most up set about the cuts in Medicare.

ATTKISSON: The American Seniors Association is flat-out against President Obama's plan which costs $313 billion in Medicare cuts over 10 years. The AARP is widely viewed as supporting the President.

BARACK OBAMA: We have the AARP on board because they know this a good deal for our seniors.

ATTKISSON: The AARP called the President's statements “inaccurate,” saying it hasn't endorsed any plan or bill. Some were left with the feeling that AARP was waffling.

GUARDANI: I feel that they’re supporting it through the back door and telling their members that they’re not through the front door.

ATTKISSON: There has been some confusion as to whether AARP is supporting or endorsing the President's plan or not. Which is it?

CHERYL MATHEIS, AARP: AARP has not endorsed any plan at this point.

ATTKISSON: Yet the AARP’s Cheryl Matheis couldn't find anything to quibble with, including the Medicare cuts which she says will not affect benefits. So is there anything in President Obama's plan that you don't like?

MATHEIS: We agree with many of the ideas, but we actually haven't seen provisions and legislation yet, so we are not, you know, we're going to reserve judgement until we see them.

ATTKISSON: Meantime, the AARP's image suffered with this town hall meeting August 4, already seen by hundreds of thousands on YouTube. Faced with skeptical questions from the audience, the AARP representative ends the meeting abruptly.

UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN NEXT TO PODIUM: I'm done.

ATTKISSON: When the discussion continues, she pulls the plug on the microphone. AARP says for a group with 40 million members that adds hundreds of thousands each month, losing 60,000 is just a drop in the bucket. But to the much smaller American Seniors Association, it's a flood. Sharyl Attkisson, CBS News, Washington.

-A still-anonymous rogue famously found his image, digitally removed the references to Time Magazine, captioned the picture with the word “socialism” and hung printed copies around L.A., making headlines.
-”After Obama was elected, you had all of these people who basically saw him as the second coming of Christ,” Alkhateeb said. “From my perspective, there wasn’t much substance to him.”
-”I abstained from voting in November,” he wrote in an e-mail. “Living in Illinois, my vote means close to nothing as there was no chance Obama would not win the state.” If he had to choose a politician to support, Alkhateeb said, it would be Ohio Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich.
-Although Alkhateeb claims he was making no political statement with the artwork, he’s plugged into the Washington debate. Though born in the United States, his Palestinian family closely follows Middle Eastern politics.
-”I think he’s definitely doing better than Bush was,” Alkhateeb said of Obama.
-He’s honored by Shepard Fairey’s assessment of his Joker picture, but disagrees with some of Fairey’s comments criticizing the message of the Socialism poster.

So, now you have met L.A. Weekly/MSNBC/S.F. Chronicle/Wasington Post’s racist right-wing nut: a Kucinich-supporting kid of Palestinian heritage from Obama’s hometown. The left will have to get creative if they hope to “Joe the Plumber” this guy.

Obama Joker Poster Artist Exposed As Liberal-Leaning Palestinian

Since NewsBusters and the Drudge Report first introduced America to the Obama Joker poster -- with help from talk radio host Tammy Bruce, of course -- most media outlets have speculated the artist was likely white, conservative, and racist.
WRONG!
As reported by the Los Angeles Times moments ago, the up-until-now anonymous creator of the poster sweeping the nation is a 20-year-old college student of Palestinian descent with largely liberal political leanings.
Honestly, you can't make this stuff up:

Bored during his winter school break, Firas Alkhateeb, a senior history major at the University of Illinois, crafted the picture of Obama with the recognizable clown makeup using Adobe's Photoshop software.
Alkhateeb had been tinkering with the program to improve the looks of photos he had taken on his clunky Kodak camera. The Joker project was his grandest undertaking yet. Using a tutorial he'd found online about how to "Jokerize" portraits, he downloaded the October 23 Time Magazine cover of Obama and began digitally painting over it.
Four or five hours later, he happily had his product. [...]
"After Obama was elected, you had all of these people who basically saw him as the second coming of Christ," Alkhateeb said. "From my perspective, there wasn't much substance to him."
"I abstained from voting in November," he wrote in an e-mail. "Living in Illinois, my vote means close to nothing as there was no chance Obama would not win the state." If he had to choose a politician to support, Alkhateeb said, it would be Ohio Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich.
How delicious: Kucinich, likely the most liberal of presidential candidates last year!
Although Alkhateeb claims he was making no political statement with the artwork, he's plugged into the Washington debate. Though born in the United States, his Palestinian family closely follows Middle Eastern politics.
"I think he's definitely doing better than Bush was," Alkhateeb said of Obama. Alkhateeb's views on foreign relations align with the Democrats, he said, while he prefers Republican ideals on domestic issues.
Alkhateeb's assessment of Obama: "In terms of domestic policy, I don't think he's really doing much good for the country right now," he said. "We don't have to 'hero worship' the guy." [...]
Regardless, Alkhateeb does agree with the Obama "Hope" artist about "socialism" being the wrong caption for the Joker image. "It really doesn't make any sense to me at all," he said. "To accuse him of being a socialist is really ... immature. First of all, who said being a socialist is evil?"
Outstanding.
Now that Alkhateeb has been unmasked, it's going to be fascinating to see how media outlets besides the LA Times report his Middle Eastern background as well as his political leaning.
