Why are Pro-Abortion Groups Rebranding? They’re Losing With Young People

The New York Times ran an interesting article last week about how supporters of legal abortion are backing away from the label “pro-choice.” But supporters of legal abortion redefining themselves is nothing new: The group NARAL started in the late 1960s as the National Association to Repeal the Abortion Laws. Later, they became the National Abortion Rights Action League.
Later still, they became the National Abortion Rights and Reproductive Rights Action League. The most interesting name shift, however, occurred in 2003, when NARAL evidently decided that abortion was playing too prominent a role in its name and they became “NARAL: Pro-Choice America.”
Apparently now even the term “pro-choice” has fallen out of favor.
The New York Times article is consistent with my own observations. As a college professor, I have noticed that campus groups supportive of legal abortion now use the term “reproductive justice” instead of “pro-choice.” I’ve also noticed that supporters of legal abortion are having a difficult time engaging the current generation of young adults. A recent Rasmussen poll confirms that impression, finding that voters under 40 were less likely than other age demographics to find the abortion issue “very important” while voting and more likely to find the issue “not at all important.”
Moreover, there is plenty of survey data which finds that the current generation of young adults is more skeptical about abortion than previous generations. The General Social Survey (GSS) has been collecting opinion data on abortion using the same battery of questions since the 1970s. During the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, respondents between the ages of 18 and 29 were the least sympathetic toward the pro-life position. Yet since 2000, the GSS has consistently found that young adults are actually more comfortable limiting abortion in certain circumstances than are older Americans.

Other polling data shows that young adults are more likely than other demographic groups to support a 20-week abortion ban and are fairly comfortable with a range of incremental pro-life laws.
The article, in other words, is good news. It is clear that supporters of legal abortion are struggling to find messaging that will engage young voters, while pro-lifers continue to make quiet inroads among young adults.

Why This Death Didn't Count

Hate crime legislation and politically-motivated reporting can have a staggering effect on what news is reported to the public.

Most Americans, and many in other countries, have heard of Matthew Shepard, the 21- year-old Wyoming college student who in October 1998 was robbed, beaten and left to die on a fence in an alleged antihomosexual "hate crime." Details of his death and the trials of his murderers were recounted endlessly in newspapers and television news programs. He became a cause célèbre for hate-crime legislation and the subject of several books and at least two made-for-TV movies.
Few, however, have ever heard of Jesse Dirkhising. That's not surprising, since the Arkansas seventh-grader's tragic death less than a year later, in September 1999, and the circumstances surrounding it were not considered newsworthy by those who shape the news we hear.
The difference, as some media watchers have pointed out, is that the two men who tied up and blindfolded 13-year-old Jesse Dirkhising, gagged him with his own underwear and repeatedly sodomized him before he suffocated were homosexuals. When Mr. Shepard was murdered, a great outcry arose for more hate-crime legislation. When Jesse Dirkhising was murdered, not only was there no outcry for hate-crime legislation, there were extremely few news sources that even carried the story.
A writer for The New Republic , himself a homosexual, reported on the media double standard in the April 2, 2001, edition. ". . . You've probably never heard of this case," he wrote. " The New York Times has yet to run a single story about it. The Washington Post has run only a tiny Associated Press report-and an ombudsman's explanation of why no further coverage is merited . . .
"In the month after Shepard's murder, [the media reported] 3,007 stories about his death. In the month after Dirkhising's murder, [the media reported] 46 stories about his. In all of last year, only one article about Dirkhising appeared in a major mainstream newspaper, The Boston Globe. The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times ignored the incident completely. In the same period, The New York Times published 45 stories about Shepard and The Washington Post published 28. This discrepancy isn't just real. It's staggering . . .
"So why the obsession with Shepard and the indifference with regard to Dirkhising? The answer is politics. The Shepard case was hyped for political reasons: to build support for inclusion of homosexuals in a federal hate-crimes law. The Dirkhising case was ignored for political reasons: squeamishness about reporting a story that could feed anti-gay prejudice, and the lack of any pending interest-group legislation to hang a story on.
"The same politics lies behind the media's tendency to extensively cover white 'hate crimes' against blacks while ignoring black 'non-hate crimes' against whites. What we are seeing, I fear, is a logical consequence of the culture that hate-crimes rhetoric promotes. Some deaths-if they affect a politically protected class-are worth more than others. Other deaths, those that do not fit a politically correct profile, are left to oblivion. The leading gay rights organization, the Human Rights Campaign-which has raised oodles of cash exploiting the horror of Shepard's murder-has said nothing whatsoever about the Dirkhising case."
Examples like this-and many more that can be found through searches of alternative media sources on the Internet-demonstrate that most major media outlets often aren't reporting the full spectrum of the news, but only the news they want you to hear . GN

As we prepare for the primaries for the mid-term Senate and Congressional elections, as well as for the 2016 presidential election, one needs to see which candidates are likely to advance the majority opinion on issues. Recently the bipartisan Defense of Marriage Act was overturned, even though it had passed both houses of congress and been signed into law by a Democratic president. Also recently, there has been an extreme non-enforcement of existing immigration laws by the current president.

This election needs to put into office a return to law on items such as these, rather than allowing rule by unelected judges and executive fiat!

[Steve Myers] Ban Christmas? Well, did you know that at one time in America Christmas was banned? If you go all the way back to the time of the Puritans you will find some interesting things. In fact, I challenge you. Go back and find out why did the Puritans ignore Christmas? Why did they discourage people from observing Christmas? Check it out.
I challenge you to find out why they didn't celebrate Christmas, and then ask yourself, "Why do I celebrate Christmas? Should I be celebrating Christmas?" Is this a tradition that actually honors God? I hope you'll check it out.
Look at all the reasons why William Bradford and many of the other Puritans did not celebrate Christmas, and compare that to your own practice, and then write us or make comments on this video and let us know what you find and what you find out when you examine what you do. I think you'll find some interesting things.

Of course the issue of the week was Phil Robertson's comments about homosexuality being a sin. Some pundits are trying to hedge their own position by saying they agree with what Mr. Robertson said, but not how he said it? He paraphrased Leviticus 18 from the Hebrew scriptures (Old Testament), and then he quoted I Corinthians 6:9-10 from the New Testament, which was written by the Apostle Paul. The Apostle Paul is known as the apostle of grace, and yet this writing of Paul's was written after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, therefore, it is part of what Christians are still commanded to follow. It is not a "law that was fulfilled" which is a misapplication of Matthew 5:17, but rather is a post "nailed to the cross" scripture that is still binding on Christians!

The A&E Television Networks has fired the Christian star of its most popular show, "Duck Dynasty," because he quoted the Bible! It's time to rally the troops and come to Phil Robertson's defense because he has been such a great champion of the Christian faith.

Pray For US is actively engaged in battle with the political forces in this country that are trying to do great harm to the Body of Christ. But on occasion, we also get involved when other significant events in the culture war, such as this, take place. Phil Robertson is now being attacked by the politically correct thought police for sharing the Gospel with millions and millions of people in a magazine article.

Phil was unjustly fired for exercising his free speech rights. For this campaign, we have assembled the fax numbers for the head honchos at the A&E Television Networks, as well as some key figures on the Board of Directors for ABC/Disney Television and the Hearst Corporation (those two companies are co-owners of A&E, which airs the "Duck Dynasty" program). Please send FaxGrams, at no cost or obligation to you, to the ten network executives on this list.  Tell them to reinstate Phil Robertson on "Duck Dynasty" and to apologize for the way they've treated him!

We are called to come to the defense of our Christian brothers and sisters when they are in need. In 1 John 4:20-21, it states, "He who says, 'I love God,' and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? And this commandment we have from him: that he who loves God must love his brother also." We need to show our love for Phil Robertson now by speaking out to the network fascists who were "offended" because he spoke the truth, straight from God's word, regarding homosexuality. Phil Robertson, pictured here, is the patriarch of an eccentric Christian family in Louisiana that has built an empire by making, of all things, duck calls. Phil was asked what he thought sin was in a recent magazine interview.  A&E fired him because his answer to that question was the same as God's: "Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men."

That's not an exact quote, but it mirrors the purity laws described in Leviticus 18.  Phil then continued by paraphrasing 1 Corinthians 6:9, stating: "Don't be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers -- they won't inherit the kingdom of God. Don't deceive yourself. It's not right." He used his celebrity to share the Gospel with millions through that statement. The intolerant homosexual mafia immediately demanded that Phil be fired, so the cowards at A&E complied, in spite of the fact that "Duck Dynasty" is one of the most popular programs in cable television history.

Phil Robertson's firing was unjust. It was a violation of his First Amendment right to freedom of speech and by firing him, it is a violation of his religious rights as well. It is time for the Christian community in America, and for all people who truly believe in freedom of speech, to start punching back at these Nazi-like thought police who want to silence any dissenters.
