“What ISIS Really Wants” by Graeme Wood in the March issue of The Atlantic is the most important piece on radical Islamist hopes and dreams since Lawrence Wright’s The Looming Tower in 2006.  What Wood produces in one place, in systematic, calm, documented and very persuasive prose backed by excellent reporting and extensive authority is the close-up on the Islamic State that has failed to come into focus by most of the leaders in the West. These are not “the jayvees.”  They never were.
Wood’s piece is one of the four articles/books we need right now, the others being about Iran/Hezbollah, Putin’s Russia and the PRC.  But one out of four is a good start.  Read it today and pass along the link.

America's Culture War: Threat to Homeland Security?

Printer-friendly version

While the U.S.-led war on terror continues worldwide, another war—of colliding cultures—heats up in the courts of America. Where will this lead the country? Could this war be a greater threat than terrorism?

Last month U.S. President George W. Bush traveled to Great Britain for a controversial state visit. His goal was to restate his case for the war against terror in general and the invasion of Iraq in particular. He spoke of the historic ties between America and Britain, particularly during the 20th century battles of aggression on the European continent. As expected, he was greeted with loud protests from those who do not share his vision of the mission he articulates for the United States and Britain in the world.
While he was abroad, the Massachusetts supreme court handed down a landmark ruling which stated that homosexual couples have the right to marry. By a 4-3 decision, the court not only bypassed federal courts, but also all other state and federal legislative bodies, to decree a new definition of marriage.
By this ruling the court declares that marriage is no longer defined as a union between a man and a woman. With one decision, likely to be followed by other states, the divine institution of marriage has been legally redefined by human beings. Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has vowed to fight this ruling with an amendment to the state's constitution.
Not only is this decision undemocratic—having been made by judges rather than citizens' elected representatives—it is ungodly. It raises itself against and above the laws of God regarding the sacred marriage covenant between a man and a woman given by Him at creation.
The homosexual marriage debate is another battle in an ongoing war that weakens the moral fabric of society. This war, a clash of cultures, threatens the long-term survival of the United States as much as does the war on terror—indeed, more so.
It is vital that you understand the extent of this war and where it will lead. It may be too late to reverse the outcome, but we can be forewarned of its consequences and pray for our merciful God to stay His hand of judgment.

Battle lines being drawn

History chronicles the efforts to fashion the world according to various religious or political ideologies. Most of these ideologies center on creating a governmental structure that establishes universal peace and freedom. The yearning of individuals to live peacefully, free from oppression of any sort, is universal. People, and the nations they create, hunger for the freedom to live as they choose.
Yet we also see the field littered with the wreckage of countless failed designs to create or impose such a world. In America today the battle between those who desire to maintain a religious foundation to the laws of the nation and those who want a society free of religious influence is reaching a critical level. This is where the battle lines are drawn.
These issues are worthy of our examination in light of what the Bible says about the role of God in the public life of any nation. Both sides need to heed what the eternal Creator says about His law and truth. Neither side will escape the judgment God will bring on a world that has both ignored and forgotten the basis for true liberty and freedom.

Religious freedom under attack?

The recent controversy over the Ten Commandments in Alabama highlighted an ongoing battle, largely in the courts, over the separation of church and state in the public life of America. For refusing to obey a federal court order to remove a granite monument inscribed with the Ten Commandments from the state judicial building, Judge Roy Moore was recently removed from his post as chief justice of the Alabama supreme court.
In refusing to remove this monument, Judge Moore defied a federal judge's order, a very dangerous precedent for any magistrate. However, his supporters remained outraged by the lack of respect for the religious roots of the U.S. legal system, which they saw symbolized in this drama. His action fed the flames of a hotly debated issue in American public life. Many people, of differing religious persuasions, are deeply concerned about the erosion of both the moral foundation of the nation and their freedom of religious expression.
America has now reached the bizarre point where judges have discerned in the U.S. Constitution prohibitions against public display of the TenCommandments while simultaneously finding constitutional rights to homosexual sex, gay marriage and dismemberment of unborn babies.
John Adams, second president of the United States, is famously quoted as saying the U.S. Constitution "was made only for a moral and religious people" and "is wholly inadequate to the government of any other" (quoted by William Federer, America's God and Country Encyclopedia of Quotations , 1996, pp. 10-11).
Adams' friend Thomas Jefferson, who authored the Declaration of Independence and later became the third American president, wrote: "The Christian religion is the best religion that has ever been given to man and I as Chief Magistrate of this nation am bound to give it the sanction of my example" (quoted by David Limbaugh, Persecution: How Liberals Are Waging War Against Christianity , 2003, p. 320).
Judge Moore is not the only religious official to come under attack for publicly affirming his personal faith. U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft, an openly religious man, is the target of many who feel his deeply held religious convictions make him unsuitable for the nation's top legal post.
Mr. Ashcroft, a former U.S. senator and an evangelical Christian and political conservative, is constantly accused of overstepping civil liberties in enforcing the Homeland Security Act. This unwarranted criticism is not surprising given the complexity of today's political and social environment and the needs of fighting the war on terror. Libertarians are concerned that American civil liberties not be sacrificed as terrorists are hunted within American borders.
America in 2004 is a divided country when it comes to interpreting the laws of the land in light of changing morals.
The 2000 presidential election exposed a nation broadly divided into two cultures. One is generally rural, conservative and religious, while the other is mostly urban, liberal and secular. Those in the former tended to vote for Republican George W. Bush while the latter group leaned in favor of Democrat Al Gore. It appears that the 2004 election will continue to highlight the differences between these two Americas.

Supreme Court overturns longtime moral standards

In his recent book Persecution , best-selling author David Limbaugh highlighted the depth of this rift in the legal arena of courts and judges. Mr. Limbaugh tells the story of increasing discrimination against religion and religious expression in American society.
In presenting his case he chronicles numerous examples in the courts, mainstream media, Hollywood entertainment, public education and the private sector.
This process is especially clear in the courts, where great strides have been made in creating vast social change by striking down laws dealing with issues of religion, sex and gender. The effect is nothing short of a consistent and persistent attack on God and His laws.
Legalized abortion continues to be a major issue driving ever deeper into the rift of American society. In 1973 the U.S. Supreme Court, in the landmark Roe v. Wade case, overruled many existing state laws by declaring that abortion was a constitutional right. This became the de facto law of the land in spite of the fact that the Constitution says nothing about abortion or the so-called "right to privacy" on which the justices made their decision.
Since then more than 40 million abortions have been carried out in spite of opposition, debate and many attempts by state legislatures to restrict this "legal" infanticide.
Former President Ronald Reagan was on record as opposing abortion and on this issue aligned himself with millions of Americans who feel abortion is murder and a blight on society. Abortion is legal in America only because of Roe v. Wade . Neither state legislatures nor the U.S. Congress have enacted a law that legalizes the procedure. It is "law" only because of the Supreme Court ruling.
In June 2003 the Supreme Court issued another landmark ruling involving a Texas law that forbade two persons of the same sex from engaging in intimate sexual conduct. In Lawrence v. Texas the court in effect declared any state law forbidding sex between homosexuals to be invalid and unconstitutional.
Speaking for the majority opinion, Justice Anthony Kennedy said homosexuals "are entitled to respect for their private lives. The state cannot demean their existence or control their destiny by making their private sexual conduct a crime" ( Los Angeles Times , "Bans on Gay Sex Ruled Unconstitutional," June 27, 2003).
Justice Antonin Scalia spoke for the minority, saying the court "signed on to the so-called homosexual agenda" and that its ruling "effectively decrees the end of all morals legislation" (ibid.). By court decree the United States, like Canada, is legalizing marriage between homosexual partners. Scalia's warning has come to pass in November's Massachusetts supreme court ruling regarding gay marriage.

Courts restrict religious freedom

Judicial activism in determining the moral law of the land is alarming many who see this as contrary to what the framers of the Constitution intended. It is also seen as a deliberate attack on religious values in American society.
In 2000 the Supreme Court decided a case involving public prayer in a school before a football game. A chaplain gave a prayer over the school's public-address system. Some students were upset and sued. In Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe , the court struck down a school district policy that allowed student prayer before activities. The court said students should not have to face "personally offensive religious ritual."
David Limbaugh writes in his book: "Chief Justice William Rehnquist got to the real nub of the problem when he commented on the majority's overt antipathy toward religion in public life, an antipathy—as this case alone shows—that has permeated the highest reaches of our judicial system.
"Rehnquist wrote: 'But even more disturbing than its holding is the tone of the Court's opinion; it bristles with hostility to all things religious in public life. Neither the holding nor the tone of the opinion is faithful to the meaning of the Establishment Clause, when it is recalled that George Washington himself, at the request of the very Congress which passed the Bill of Rights, proclaimed a day of "public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God."'"
Limbaugh comments, "This case dealt a significant blow to religious freedom by holding that a public school ... violated the Establishment Clause" ( Persecution , pp. 23-24).
The Establishment Clause is the section of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that says, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." In the area of public education, this statement against federal support of religion has been interpreted to some extreme ends.
Doing so has systematically removed much of the Judeo-Christian teaching on which the educational structure was founded. Mr. Limbaugh goes on to say that the void left by removal of religious influences has been filled with other values. "While the education establishment vigorously opposes the dissemination in schools of any value or belief that can be remotely traced to the Bible, it affirmatively endorses other values that many Christians find repugnant. Public schools are replete with values-laden curricula, from sex education and sexual orientation instruction to notions of self-esteem and death education" (p. 4).
In their effort to remove school prayer and other religious values and expressions from the school environment, the courts engage in lofty and erudite language to defend the modern interpretation of the Establishment Clause. The same reasoning is used to order removal of a monument containing the Ten Commandments from a public building.

A sound foundation undermined by evil

The U.S. Constitution is a noble document, forged by wise and understanding men who searched centuries of law codes to write the visionary legal foundation for a new nation. It can even be demonstrated that in the political writings of the Founding Era (1760-1800), that generation cited the Bible more often than any other source (Limbaugh, p. 312).
Yet the First Amendment, however understood, is only the writing of men and does not carry the same weight as the Word of God. When the judges of a nation hold their opinions and reasoning in higher regard than the Bible, in time there will come a divine judgment of terrifying proportions. God says, "But on this one will I look: on him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at My word" (Isaiah:66:2).
The apostle Paul said men "did not like to retain God in their knowledge," becoming "haters of God." Those with that attitude deserve the "righteous judgment of God" (Romans:1:28-32). If America is to retain its lofty status as the world's most powerful nation, it would do well to heed this warning.
It is plain that the governmental mechanisms established to ensure liberty are now being used to undermine the remaining values of faith and virtue in the nation's legal codes. The framers of the Constitution understood the need for a system of checks and balances to restrain human nature in government.
James Madison, known as "the father of the Constitution" and the fourth president of the United States, wrote in The Federalist 51 : "If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself" (quoted by Limbaugh, p. 319).
This ideal state has never been achieved.
It could be argued that representative democracy has come closest. Yet even there, as British Prime Minister Winston Churchill observed, "Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others that have been tried from time to time."
In 1 Samuel 8 we find the story of the ancient nation of Israel rejecting God as their ruler and demanding a king like all the other nations. Samuel the prophet warned them of the problems that would eventually arise.
He foretold the ultimate downfall of every human form of government when he pointed out that the people inevitably would "be his [the king's] servants" (verse 17). In other words, human government inevitably regresses from serving the people who establish it. And when any government fails to serve the good of its people and places itself above the will of God, it is on the slippery slope of decay and decline.

Has popular culture defeated religion?

The French historian Alexis de Tocqueville toured America during the 19th century. He observed the unique religious nature of the people. He wrote: "For the Americans the ideas of Christianity and liberty are so completely mingled that it is almost impossible to get them to conceive of the one without the other ... Religion ... must be regarded as the first of their political institutions ... I do not know whether all Americans have a sincere faith in their religion—for who can search the human heart?—but I am certain that they hold it indispensable to the maintenance of republican institutions" ( Democracy in America , Vol. 1, p. 316).
If America is a religious nation, why has its society seen such overwhelming transformation of its foundational institutions? For years observers have chronicled the decline of morality in the popular culture. Politicians, clergy and business executives, to name only a few, have come under the withering satire and denigration of movies, music and television. Marriage and traditional family and gender roles have been redefined before the catatonic eyes of a public amused into a near-comatose state.
The past 40 years have seen great social changes take place in the United States.
But where were the churches in all of this? Why hasn't religion, with all its megachurches and modern marketing techniques, stirred the country to another "great awakening"? Could it be that they have been asleep and that they lack the true power of the Holy Spirit?
In the wake of the impeachment and sex scandals of former President Bill Clinton in 1998, Paul Weyrich, a leader of the Christian political movement Moral Majority, wrote in the Washington Post that conservative Christians had "lost the culture wars." His words implied that religion does not exert a strong or life-changing influence on the national scene. This may seem contradictory in light of the public's perception of the influence of churches and religion.
Polls indicate 80 percent of Americans believe in God. Yet Gallup polling shows church attendance has actually declined since the 1960s and has remained level since 1980 with no appreciable growth. Two thirds of the population may claim membership in a church but that does not always translate into attendance, much less actually living in accordance with church teachings.
Some evidence suggests that Americans tell pollsters they attend church when they really don't. A recent article in The Atlantic Monthly quoted John Stackhouse Jr., a teacher of theology and culture: "Beginning in the 1990s a series of sociological studies has shown that many more Americans tell pollsters that they attend church regularly than can be found in church when teams actually count" (May 2003, p. 34).
For those who do attend, what do they believe and how does that translate into a living faith? Sociologist Alan Wolfe has written a book titled The Transformation of American Religion: How We Actually Live Our Faith. His conclusions, after traveling the country interviewing and observing churches and members, are enlightening and sobering. He says that American religion has become mainstream enough to look like the popular culture of the land. He concludes that American culture has triumphed over religion.
If so, then the power to halt societal decline does not rest in religion. It has lost its power. Wolfe says: "In the United States, culture has transformed Christ, as well as other religions found within these shores. In every aspect of the religious life, American faith has met American culture—and American culture has triumphed."
On matters of fundamental biblical doctrine, things have dramatically changed. "Talk of hell, damnation, and even sin has been replaced by a nonjudgmental language of understanding and empathy. More Americans than ever proclaim themselves born again in Christ, but the lord to whom they turn rarely gets angry and frequently strengthens self-esteem ... Far from living in a world elsewhere, the faithful in the United States are remarkably like everyone else" (pp. 2-3).
Many large popular evangelical churches do not systematically teach or clearly define their doctrines, because they want to attract the unchurched, the large mass of middle America who claims no attendance or affiliation. In a theological "catch 22," Wolfe states, "Evangelical churches lack doctrine because they want to attract new members. Mainline churches lack doctrine because they want to hold on to those declining numbers of members they have" (p. 87).

Are you willing to pay the price?

To benefit from faith, we must be willing to pay the price of repentance, commitment and conversion. If one wants inner peace, God's blessing and a strong, resilient, free country, there must be a turn to God and a true faith unlike any experienced before.
For the United States to experience a turnaround that will reverse its cultural and moral slide, there must be a recognition that change cannot take place without a transformation from the values of the society to the values of the Kingdom of God.
With God's help we can change ourselves, but we cannot change the world. Only God can do that, and the Bible shows us this will not happen until the return of Jesus Christ. Until then the message of the Kingdom is preached and those who seek it must strive to live by its values. That is a daunting task in today's world. The teachings of Christ shed an embarrassing light on those whose work mirrors the kingdom of darkness. And make no mistake about it: Darkness fights back to extinguish that uncomfortable light.
It is time for Americans to recognize the grave danger gathering on the horizon. In the immediate aftermath of the deadly Sept. 11 attacks, America experienced a brief revival in religious interest and church attendance—yet it quickly faded.
It may be too late to change the course of the nation and its drift from its longtime moral foundations. But it is not too late for you, the individual citizen, to turn to God in heartfelt repentance.
In Ezekiel:18:27 and verses 30-31, God through His prophet says: "... When a wicked man turns away from the wickedness which he committed, and does what is lawful and right, he preserves himself alive." To our nations today, the Almighty still speaks: "Repent, and turn from all your transgressions, so that iniquity will not be your ruin ... Get yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. For why should you die ...?" GN

Defund DHS, Reject Loretta Lynch—But Only Impeachment Will Stop Obamnesty

An interesting article from www.vdare.com about DHS, Loretta Lynch, and impeachment. This follows this post about the president defying a court order on immigration. This follows this post on HOW amnesty is funded in ways other than the DHS. Remember, “Amnesty” means ANY non-enforcement of existing immigration laws! This follows this comment and this post about how to Report Illegal Immigrants! Also, you can read two very interesting books HERE.

Defund DHS, Reject Loretta Lynch—But Only Impeachment Will Stop Obamnesty

Dr. Ben Carson is willing to say about Obama that “I think we can start talking about treason.” White Republicans should be saying that, but they’re afraid of being called racist.
Another day in the death of the Republic:
As I write this evening (Monday February 23) it’s too still early to tell if, by proposing to split a vote on funding Obamnesty from the overall Department of Homeland Security funding bill, voting on the former first, Mitch McConnell is trying to wriggle out of using the power of the purse to stop Obamnesty, as the GOP leadership has repeatedly promised, or whether, as the National Journal puts it, Mitch McConnell Looks to Trap Democrats With a Standalone Immigration Bill (by Lauren Fox and Sarah Mimms, February 23, 2015).
Or both. Or neither. Whatever—the bottom line:
  1. The irresistible force meeting the immoveable object of Democratic intransigence is…continuing grassroots resistance from ordinary Americans.
The ludicrous vacillations of the GOP’s venal Conservatism Inc. leadership, clearly unable to decide whether to fight or flee Obamnesty, speaks to the sheer fear inspired by this invisible and uncelebrated force, which stood between America and annihilation via Amnesty/ Immigration Surge throughout the 113th Congress in opposition to the entire political elite, and still so stands today.
Calling Congress works!
But nevertheless:
  1. Obama will not let the GOP “get this behind” it. Obamnesty is just the beginning.
There is quite obviously something peculiar about Obama. For example, no normal politician would court suspicion by not attending church, least of all if he actually had a Muslim background. (Byron York has an excellent analysis in Why are Americans confused about Obama’s religion?, Washington Examiner, February 22, 2015). But Obama obstinately continues to do so.
Perhaps the key to Obama’s personality is the concept of Narcissistic Expectations Syndrome—everything has always been given to him on a silver plate, and he expects that to continue. When balked, he reacts with lethal rage. Thus, after the disaster of the 2014 midterms, Obama reacted with his insanely aggressive and plainly unconstitutional Executive Amnesty. Ironically, given the amoeba-like personalities of most professional politicians, Democratic and Republican, this means that to them he has created a fact.
The problem, however, is that Obama will not stop creating facts through executive order. Already, he has moved unilaterally to drop sanctions against Communist Cuba and to attack gun rights. His drive to Elect A New People will certainly continue—and, who knows, he may do something that actually upsets the GOP’s donors, like tightening pollution controls on industry.
What we have here is a constitutional crisis. The GOP leadership should get used to it.
  1. Who cares about the Department of Homeland Security? And how many 9/11s is blocking Amnesty worth?
John Derbyshire recently commented:
Would it make any difference to the security of our homeland if the DHS were defunded? In matters of immigration and border control, the executive branch won’t let them do their work anyway.
If the political class were really concerned about terrorism, it would not be importing Muslim “refugees” and other immigrants from the Middle East at the current pace.
But there’s a larger question beyond this. Nearly 3000 Americans died on 9/11. But nearly 4,500 died in the subsequent Iraq War and there were 407,000 American military deaths in World War II—in both cases incurred by deliberate public policy. How many losses, how much of a risk, is constitutional government, and protecting the historic American nation from demographic displacement, worth?
  1. MSM air supremacy is a problem—but sometimes instructive
Like the Wehrmacht or the North Vietnamese Army, Republicans have to operate in an environment where their adversaries have complete air supremacy, through their control of the Main Stream Media. Thus although the GOP has voted to fund the normal operations of DHS, and it would be the Obama Administration that chose to shut the DHS down because its unconstitutional Executive Amnesty was not also funded, GOP operatives are obviously terrified that they will be blamed anyway, because of MSM spin.
But the Left’s total control of the media often backfires because of the resulting overconfidence. For example, the fanatical immigration enthusiast editors of Bloomberg News just gloated:
Now that they’re back in Washington after a weeklong break, Senate Republicans should make their first order of business something they’ve been wanting to do for a long time anyway: saying goodbye to their least favorite member of President Barack Obama’s cabinet, Attorney General Eric Holder.
The problem is that giving Holder a proper send-off requires confirming his replacement, Loretta Lynch. And approving Lynch means acknowledging that they cannot block Obama’s executive actions on immigration….
In other words: The fight over Obama’s immigration order is over. Republicans have lost. Holding Lynch hostage — or even defeating her nomination, as Senators Ted Cruz and Rand Paul are urging — will not change this central fact.
Say Goodbye to Eric Holder, Republicans, Editorial, February 23, 2015. Links in original
Actually, of course defeating Lynch, will change “this central fact,” by demonstrating that the GOP can and will cripple the Administration until it backs down on Executive Amnesty. As the triumphalist Bloomberg bullies inadvertently made clear, the GOP has nothing to lose.
  1. Ben Carson is right—it’s treason. The answer is impeachment.
VDARE.com has a fairly skeptical attitude to the various Great Black Hopes that GOP operatives periodically trot out, exploiting the base’s genuine good will and its sincere eagerness to be fair. But Dr. Ben Carson was entirely right when he said, anticipating McConnell’s maneuver:
I would say break the funding for Homeland Security up into parcels. Don’t present it as a whole bill. That makes it much more difficult for him to stand in the way. And, if he does stand in the way, particularly with things that are vital to the security of this country, then I think we can start talking about treason.
Ben Carson Suggests Obama Could Be ‘Guilty Of Treason’ If He Blocks National Security Funding, by Alex Griswold, February 17, 2015. Emphasis added.
As VDARE.com has been arguing since Obama began moving toward Executive Amnesty, in the end, if the GOP really wants to defend America, the ultimate answer is impeachment.
Paradoxically, it would be easier than the current mess.

Editorial: Homeland Security and FCC attack Americans

Editorial

The president's policy for Homeland Security and the FCC are either going to be changed, defunded, or they will begin to attack Americans.

The Homeland Security will begin to allow 5 million illegal immigrants to avoid deportation. There is no "clean bill" now to defund this other than HB 240 which the Senate Democrats are filibustering and the president will veto. https://www.numbersusa.com/sendfax

The FCC will now begin to ban speech opposing the president if it is not reigned in unless HR 279 is passed. Otherwise the FCC's "net neutrality" will begin to censor opposition speech in the U.S. https://prayfor.us/150220_31113_p4us_pp_obama_internet_grab_coming/

China Has No Plans to Suspend Its One-Child Policy Resulting in Forced and Sex-Selection Abortions

China Has No Plans to Suspend Its One-Child Policy Resulting in Forced and Sex-Selection Abortions

International   Women's Rights Without Frontiers   Beijing, China

On January 1, 2014, the Chinese Communist Party tweaked the One Child Policy, allowing couples in which either parent is an only child to have a second child.  This minor exception has been widely and wrongfully reported as an “easing” or “relaxation” of the One Child Policy.
One non-profit organization recently released a statement that they “would like to celebrate and rejoice” in the “victory” that additional babies have been born under the most recent exception.  Their statement – and the reports published in the mainstream media — do not mention the fact that the Chinese Communist Party has made no promise whatsoever to end coercive birth control.
To the contrary, on January 28, 2015, Chinese Communist Party news organ Chinadaily.com stated, “National Health and Family Planning Commission officials said in November [2014] that China currently has no plans to suspend or further relax its One-Child Policy.”  “Shanghai Couples Urged to have 2nd Children” 1/28/15 http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2015-01/28/content_19424074.htm
At an October 2014 event concerning the One Child Policy co-hosted by The Heritage Foundation and Women’s Rights Without Frontiers, blind activist Chen Guangcheng described a “war zone” caused by brutal family planning abuses: “In today’s China, under the Communist rule, the government can put their hand into your body, grab your baby out of your womb, and kill your baby in your face.”  “They Will Kill Your Baby in Your Face – Chinese Activist Chen Guangcheng”  11/4/14 http://www.womensrightswithoutfrontiers.org/blog/?p=1863.  At the same event, Cong. Chris Smith called the one-child policy, “the most egregious, vicious attack on women ever.  China’s one-child policy announced in 1979 is state-sponsored violence against women and children – including and especially the girl child – and constitutes massive crimes against humanity.”  400 Million Lives “Prevented” through the One Child Policy, Chinese Official Says 10/10/14
http://cnsnews.com/news/article/penny-starr/400-million-lives-prevented-through-one-child-policy-chinese-official-says
Reggie Littlejohn, president of Women’s Rights Without Frontiers, stated, “The coercive enforcement of the One Child Policy continues unabated, destroying women, children, whole families – and indeed, the fabric of Chinese society.  It constitutes the greatest women’s rights violation on the face of the earth and in the history of the world.  Whether you are pro-life or pro-choice, no one supports forced abortion, because it is not a choice.  The One Child Policy does not need to be ‘eased.’  It needs to be abolished.”

There has been a tragic rise in murder and suicide associated with the crushing “social compensation fees,” which can cost up to fourteen times a person’s annual salary, an amount the vast majority of Chinese citizens cannot afford.  If the parents are unable to pay these “terror fines,” their children will be denied “hukou,” or household registration.  Without hukou, children are ineligible for healthcare or education.  They become illegal aliens in their own land. “Chinese Mother, fined $54,200 for Flouting One-child Policy, Sues Police. http://www.voanews.com/content/reu-chinese-mother-fined-54200-one-child-policy-sues/1803992.html 12/5/13

Here are some of the reported tragedies caused by the One Child Policy.  Most abuses suffered under the One Child Policy are never reported in the west.
  • In China’s Guangxi Region, a man stabbed to death two government workers after they told him he could not register his fourth child because he did not pay the “social compensation fee.”  He injured four other workers, including severing the hand of one. “Crazed Chinese father-of-four stabs two government officials to death over one child policy.” http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2376771/Chinese-father-kills-1-child-policy-officials-registering-4th-child.html  7/24/13.  (Although this incident happened before August 1, 2013, it happened so close to the deadline that it was not included in our 2013 report, so we have included it here.)
  • In Hunan Province, a husband demanded compensation from the Chinese government, claiming that his wife, Gong Qifeng, has suffered from schizophrenia and violent behavior since she was forcibly aborted at seven months in November, 2011.  “Forced abortion at 7 Months – The Horror of China’s One Child Policy Sparks Further Outrage.”  http://www.christianpost.com/news/forced-abortion-at-7-months-the-horror-of-chinas-one-child-policy-sparks-further-outrage-101764/ 8/7/13; “Chinese couple seeks damages for forced abortion.”  http://www.worldmag.com/2014/01/chinese_couple_seeks_damages_for_forced_abortion 1/10/14
  • In Shandong Province, Liu Xinwen was dragged out of her home in the middle of the night by 20 officials, who kicked down her door and restrained her husband.  They forcibly aborted her, six months pregnant.  “China Couple Speak of ‘Forced Abortion.’”  http://news.sky.com/story/1150016/china-couple-speak-of-forced-abortion 10/4/13
  • Ai Guangdong, a farmer in Hebei Province, killed himself by drinking pesticide during a dispute with family planning officials over fines for his over-quota children.  Since the farmer did not have money to pay the fines, family planning officials confiscated 3.5 tons of corn, the entire savings of the family.  Ai Guangdong then visited the home of the Party Chief to dispute this action.  Finally the farmer drank pesticide at the home of the Party Chief, and promptly died.  “Farmer drinks poison after being fined for violations of family planning policy.”  http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/830847.shtml 12/8/13
  • In Xinjiang Province, four Uyghur women were forcibly aborted, one of them at nine months.  As ethnic minorities, Uyghurs are supposedly exempt from the One Child Policy.  This is not the case. While they may have more than one child, they are nevertheless subject to coercive termination of out-of-plan pregnancies.  “Four Uyghur Women Forced to Abort Their Babies in Zinjiang.”  http://www.rfa.org/english/news/uyghur/abortion-12302013050902.html; “Xinjiang authorities try to force six women to abort for violating one-child policy.”  http://www.asianews.it/news-en/Xinjiang-authorities-try-to-force-six-women-to-abort-for-violating-one-child-policy-29925.html. 12/30/13
  • An obstetrician in Shaanxi province, Zhang Shuxia, was convicted of trafficking seven infants, after she had convinced their parents that the infants were seriously ill or deceased.  She was given a suspended death sentence.  It has been estimated that 70,000 children a year are trafficked in China.  The doctor sold boys at a premium, costing more than twice as much as girls.  “Obstetrician convicted in Chinese baby-trafficking case.”  http://www.wnd.com/2014/01/obstetrician-convicted-in-chinese-baby-trafficking-case/ 1/16/14; “Chinese doctor sentenced to death for selling babies.”  http://nypost.com/2014/01/14/chinese-doctor-sentenced-to-death-for-selling-babies/ 1/14/14
  • In Guizhou Province, a farmer and father of four committed suicide because he could not afford to pay the fines to enroll his children in school.  His wife stated, “He said to me before he cut his wrists, ‘What did we bring them into the world for, to be as dumb as cattle?  I cannot see my children grow up uneducated.’” After his death, the authorities provided the family with a new house and money to educate the children. “Chinese father of four commits suicide over one-child policy fines so his children can go to school.”  5/26/14
These atrocities continue to this day.
The minor modification of the policy that took place on January 1, 2014: 1) does not affect a large percentage of couples in China; 2) retains the dreaded “birth intervals” between children (if a woman gets pregnant before the interval has lapsed, she may be subject to forced abortion); and 3) makes no promise to end the coercive enforcement of the Policy.
To proclaim “victory” under these circumstances is entirely unwarranted and may mislead many into thinking that the One Child Policy is a thing of the past.  Littlejohn stated, “It is a continuing heartache to me when people celebrate minor revisions in the One Child Policy.  I think of all the women and babies suffering and dying now from forced abortions.  It is hard to lead a movement to end forced abortion in China when people think it has already ended. So long as forced abortion and sterilization continue in China we must fight it.  This is a time to increase pressure for change, not to release it.

Wknd Box Office: McFarland, USA, The DUFF, Hot Tub Time Machine 2

Here is an interesting article from http://www.debbieschlussel.com/ reviewing some of the movies that came out over the past weekend. This follows this post about some of the movies from last week and THIS POST about some movies that have been released over the past few years that you might have missed! This all follows this post about guidelines to choosing good movies to watch yourself!

Wknd Box Office: McFarland, USA, The DUFF, Hot Tub Time Machine 2

Two out of three new movies debuting in theaters today are decent. So things are definitely getting better.

* “McFarland, USA“: I had mixed feelings about this. I mostly liked it and do recommend it. But, while it is an incredibly uplifting and positive movie (and if I had kids, I would take them to see it), it also contains several scenes using the stock narrative that most White people are prejudiced and bigoted (in this case, against Hispanics of Mexican descent). This Disney movie has an overall positive message: that no matter who you are or where you come from, through hard work and doing what’s right, you can succeed in America. And, for that reason alone, it’s worthy. I thought that this was going to be a propaganda film for illegal alien amnesty. But, thankfully, it wasn’t. In fact, immigration and the immigration status of those in the movie are never mentioned (even though in real life, they were probably issues).
Based on a true story, Kevin Costner plays coach Jim White, a high school teacher who coaches his high school cross country team to winning the first ever California state championship in the sport in 1987, the year the movie takes place. White moves his family to McFarland, California, a town dominated by immigrants from Mexico, who work the fields picking produce. He notices that, after school, the kids–running to the fields to help their families pick the produce–run at incredibly fast speeds, faster than the top runners in the State of California. And he convinces the local high school to start a cross country team. Despite naysayers, doubters, and bigots on competing teams, his runners work hard, stay the course, and win the state championship. And, on top of that, despite the fact that none of their parents were educated beyond the ninth grade, all of those on the team got college scholarships to run cross country and all of them graduated.

What bothered me: every single scene of competition between the McFarland team and others in California, includes some sort of racism or bigotry on the part of the other teams, all of whom are completely White. It’s the usual stock narrative that all Whites–except, in this movie, the coach and his family–are bigots. But there is little shown in the reverse, even though we know that, in real life, there is also bigotry against Whites in the Mexican immigrant community. (Ever hear of La Raza (The Race)?) This typical Hollywood plot line and the lack of balance on this issue troubled me. But it is a small part of the movie when compared to the positive parts of it.
One other thing: Jim White says that his relationship with his players involved a lot of Christianity and group prayers with his runners. None of that is shown, other than one scene toward the end, in which his runners engage in a brief, pre-race prayer to G-d. White told USA Today that this faith aspect of his team’s success is largely erased in the movie. And, today, he’d probably be sued by the ACLU over it.
Like I said, this movie is overwhelmingly positive and moral, typical of Disney fare and suitable for family viewing. And if it did not include the narrative of constant White bigotry, I would give it THREE or even THREE-AND-A-HALF REAGANS. Because it does include that, I give it . .

* “The DUFF“: I (and probably you) have seen a million versions of this movie before–ostracized nerdy girl is persecuted at school, but eventually becomes a swan and gets the hot guy (not necessarily in that order). But, still, I enjoyed this movie, despite some minor raunchy humor. The movie is funny and has a good message: that your inner worth and morality is valuable and important above outer beauty and materialism.
I must point out that I do NOT like the director of this film, Ari Sandel. I interviewed the vapid, self-hating Jew Sandel, when he was nominated for an Oscar for his dumb moral equivalence movie, “West Bank Story,” which essentially says that Jewish-Israeli victims of Islamic terrorism and Palestinian terrorists and their supporters are morally equivalent. And if they would only make and eat falafel together and sing, dance, and romance like “West Side Story,” all would be good with the world. Read about my interview with Sandel, the typical Hollywood dhimmi leftist.
The story: a high school student, Bianca (Mae Whitman), who has two better-looking best friends, is told by her next door neighbor that she is the “DUFF”–Designated Ugly Fat Friend–for her clique of friends. At first, she is angry. But, then, she researches it, and realizes that she probably is the DUFF. The funniest part of the movie is when she searches “DUFF” online and popping onto the screen is a photo of Chris Christie a/k/a Chris ChrispieCreme with Barack Obama.

Bianca is persecuted and ostracized by the “popular” girl at school, and can’t bring herself to talk to the guy at school on whom she has a crush. So, she hires her next door neighbor–a good-looking jock, who strongly resembles Tom Cruise (Robbie Amell)–to coach her out of DUFFdom. Unfortunately, it backfires, after an embarrassing video of her is released by the popular girl, and all of the high school laughs at her. The bullying via social media, at first, crushes her. But she is strong and moves on. Ultimately, Bianca realizes what’s important in life and that beauty, as the trite saying goes, is only skin deep. She also realizes that she needs to be herself and not let haters get her down. Although the ending of the movie is predictable and probably not realistic regarding what would happen in real life, I liked it.
Beware that this movie is aimed at adults under thirty, so if you aren’t in that group, you aren’t the target demo. But for teens and 20-somethings, it’s uplifting stuff with a decent message and happy ending.

* “Hot Tub Time Machine 2“: High quality Gitmo torture material. Sooooo bad. Just absolutely awful. I hated the first “Hot Tub Time Machine” (read my review), but this second installment (um, who decided we needed a second one?) makes that one look like a cinematic masterpiece. Barf. Methinks the purpose of this movie was to show us shots of penises and women’s breasts. ‘Cuz the “story” is incredibly stupid, ridiculous, and nonsensical. There are a few funny lines, but mostly this movie is dumb and disgusting. Men being forced to anal rape each other on a futuristic virtual reality TV show–this is funny how? A painting of a man raping a tiger–again, how is this funny? (And where is PETA when you need it?)
In the first installment, a few male friends and relatives are at a resort and discover that the hot tub is a time machine, taking them back in time. In this sequel, the men have gotten rich because they went back in time, stealing ideas from the present, to make money. Lou (Rob Corddry) invented a search engine, “Lougle.” And that was after he was the lead singer of “Motley Lou.” Nick (Craig Robinson) “wrote” a bunch of very popular songs, all of which he stole and went back to the past to “pre-plagiarize.” That includes a song by Lisa Loeb (she makes a cameo–must’ve been pretty desperate for a paycheck), who is now a cat wrangler for Nick’s video for the song he stole from her. Everyone hates Lou, and someone shoots him in the penis. So, all of the characters go into the hot tub time machine to try to save Lou’s life. They end up in the future, and lots of idiocy ensues to find out who is Lou’s shooter (and to try and stop it).
Lewd and ridiculous. This movie is an IQ test. If you like it, you fail. A total waste of time and two hours of my life I’ll never get back.

Stratfor CEO George Friedman's latest book, "Flashpoints: The Emerging Crisis in Europe"  focuses on the critical areas making headlines in today's Europe. I consider this a must read for anyone wanting a balanced analysis of the financial crisis in the EU, the emergence of Germany in the leading role on the continent and why Ukraine and the Russian incursion across soveriegn boarders matters. In fact it is a must read to understand the larger question of why Europe really matters in today’s world.
Friedman is a geographer and this approach shapes much of the books view and conclusions–as it should. Reading Friedman is always a primer on how the placement of nations and peoples on this earth impact history. The little understood key of just where people have settled and is a little understood part of global politics.
Europe has always mattered in both ancient and modern world history. Friedman's focus is on the period from the age of exploration begun by Portugal and Spain that inaugurated European expansion from the fifteenth century forward. This part of the book I found the most fascinating and appropriately titled, "Europe's Assault on the World". If one section can summarize why Europe matters it is this along with this clear statement.
"No one is certain how many died through the direct impact of European imperialism, from military action, starvation, disease, and other causes. Some experts estimate 100 million dead over the course of four centuries of empire building, but no one really knows. The dead were drawn from a world population much smaller than exists today, making the price even more staggering. But so was the wealth extracted, accumulated, and put to work in Europe. When I walk the streets of London or Paris, the almost magical uses of the wealth Europe extracted from its empire can be seen in each building–or in a single street lamp. The price the world paid was enormous, but so were the possibilities created" (page 27).
Could this be said of any other period or empire in history?
Europe has given the world the heights of civilization and depths of barbarity. It is a paradox both mysterious and rational. But I think Friedman puts his finger on both the geopolitical and spiritual map when he says his story is "...about the European obsession with the world, and its hunger to own it" (page 42). Friedman says his purpose is to deal with "the European obsession with possessing everything and where it comes from and where it leads to..." (page 42). In some ways it is Part One of this work that is most helpful to a student of Bible history and prophecy. Without intending, nor likely even believing, Friedman lays out a compelling case to show how Europe in its history and purposes form a narrative for the background for the Babylon of the Book of Revelation
Understanding the current European state is critically important in today's world. One cannot understand where this world is heading without an historical background to Europe both politically and spiritually. I tell my students they must understand why Europe matters in the modern world. Friedman explains the role of German resurgence and why it is the "indispensable nation" in Europe's present and future. He concludes his book with a chilling observation that Europe could easily return to it's historical ways. He says it is a fantasy to think that Europe has moved beyond using armed conflict to settle its problems.
"The Europeans are still human, and they will still encounter terrible choices like those that others face and that they have faced in the past. They will have to choose between war and peace, and as in the past, they will at times choose war" (page 258).
Flashpoints should be considered a basic primer to understanding much about what is transpiring today in Europe. Europe continues to be a fascinating area to watch and understand.
