The Latest in Egypt


Mohammed Morsi has given himself dictatorial powers. The big question is what the military will do in the largest Arab state.



[Steve Myers] Big things are happening in the Mid-East once again. In Egypt, Mr. Morsi, the president, there has granted himself extra powers, basically making himself dictator over all of Egypt. Even though he's denying that, in essence, that's what these things have done. What he's granted himself is power to the level that the judicial system can't even question his decisions.



[Darris McNeely] And this has also brought people back out into the streets about a year and a half, nearly two years now since the first Arab Spring riots in Egypt that toppled former President Hosni Mubarak and now led to what people thought would be a breath of democracy within Egypt. They had elections. They elected Mohammed Morsi, who is associated with the Islamic Brotherhood, a fundamentalist group within Egypt. And now he has taken this bold step in the wake of the recent Gaza bombings between Israel and Gaza and the brokered ceasefire that he was a part of. He's now taken these powers to himself and has brought people back out into the streets.



[Steve Myers] It raises a lot of questions. What's going to happen in Egypt? Will it become an Islamic state? Could it become another Iran? You see, these issues come right to the heart of the matter because these are the things that the Egyptians were protesting against before Mr. Morsi came to power. So how exactly is it going to turn out and why should we keep our eye on what's happening in Egypt?



[Darris McNeely] The reason we should be keeping our eye on Egypt is because of course it is part of a volatile region. Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria - all of the Middle East and other countries played significant roles in future Bible prophecy. In Daniel 11:42-43 [42] He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape.

[43] But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.





See All..., Egypt is mentioned as this powerful King of the North, comes into the region and Egypt specifically is mentioned. And so what takes place in Egypt, the largest, most populous, Arab state with the largest standing military within the Middle East, what happens there is critical. And in regard to this current crisis, again one of the key players is the military and what they will do - whether they will support Mr. Morsi, whether they will follow the side of the man in the street, the population, the public of Egypt which they are sworn by duty to protect. Exactly what they will do is really the critical step here because since the early 1950's the military really has been the major power within Egypt. So you need to watch what's taking place with the military in this most important and critical nation of Egypt in the Middle East.



[Steve Myers] Especially when you think of it in terms of Bible prophecy. Remember the Bible talks about Arab coalitions. How will that come about? Let's keep our eye on what's happening in Egypt and how it may begin to fulfill some of those prophecies that you find in your Bible.

The key Middle Eastern prophecy of Daniel 11 clearly states that "the land of Egypt shall not escape" the military invasion by the king of the North (verse 42), launched in retaliation to provocation by the leader of an end-time Muslim alliance known as the king of the South (verse 40).







Source: WikimediaCurrently Egypt finds itself in news headlines because of the "Arab Spring," which in Egypt brought the fall of the Mubarak government and the ascent of fundamentalist Islam. The West depends on Egyptian stability because roughly 30 percent of the world's oil passes through the Suez Canal. There are also well-founded fears that Egypt's stable relationship with the bordering state of Israel may be seriously threatened, the breakdown of which could lead to another Mideast war.



America gives about $2 billion to Cairo annually, mostly in military aid—though that is in jeopardy now with Islamists set to gain considerable control of the next Egyptian government. And another key question is who will ultimately gain control of the high-tech U.S. armaments already in Egypt, including many advanced tanks and jet fighters? Will they fall into the hands of a future regime hostile to the West, the United States and Israel in particular?



Thankfully, whatever may lie ahead during this age of human misrule, in the end the Egyptians are going to experience a brilliant future following the second coming of Jesus Christ. They may have some hard lessons to learn at the beginning of Christ's 1,000-year reign (see Zechariah 14:18-19 [18] And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the LORD will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.

[19] This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.





See All...), but the Hebrew prophet Isaiah shows that ultimately all will be well.



Isaiah says of that time, "In that day there will be an altar to the Lord in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar to the Lord at its border" (Isaiah 19:19In that day shall there be an altar to the LORD in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar at the border thereof to the LORD.

Then he goes on to explain what caused this to happen: "For they [the Egyptians] will cry to the Lord because of the oppressors, and He will send them a Savior and a Mighty One to deliver them. Then the Lord will be known in Egypt, and the Egyptians will know the Lord in that day" (verses 20-21). Indeed this will be a time when all nations and peoples will know the true God "from the least of them to the greatest of them" (Jeremiah 31:34And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

Then "there will be a highway from Egypt to [Egypt's ancient enemy] Assyria . . . and the Egyptians will serve [God] with the Assyrians. In that day Israel will be one of three with Egypt and Assyria—a blessing in the midst of the land, whom the Lord of hosts shall bless, saying, ‘Blessed is Egypt My people, and Assyria the work of My hands, and Israel My inheritance'" (Isaiah 19:23-25 [23] In that day shall there be a highway out of Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt, and the Egyptian into Assyria, and the Egyptians shall serve with the Assyrians.

[24] In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, even a blessing in the midst of the land:

[25] Whom the LORD of hosts shall bless, saying, Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance.

Today's news reports tell us that the adherents of Coptic Christianity in Egypt are suffering enormous persecution in the wake of the Arab Spring and the overthrow of the secular Egyptian government that for the most part protected their rights and safety. Egyptians are voting for the second day in the country's historic presidential election, 15 months after the ousting of Hosni Mubarak....

The vote began on Wednesday, amid huge excitement and some anger over one of the leading candidates in the race.



Ahmed Shafiq, the former prime minister under Mubarak, was pelted with stones and shoes as he voted in Cairo. "The coward is here," one man shouted as the 70-year-old was forced to retreat to his car.



Shafiq, a former Air Force commander, is expected to win significant support in the election, although his ties to the old regime make him a deeply divisive figure.



On Twitter, some young Egyptians who joined the revolution bemoaned their parents' support for the controversial candidate.



"My dad is actually trying to convince me with Shafiq," one tweeter complained....



The Muslim Brotherhood's candidate Mohammed Mursi said voters would not accept anyone from "Mubarak's corrupt regime"....

Egypt: Tens of thousands throng to Tahrir Square as Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamic supremacist groups rally


This is the "Arab Spring" uprising that Barack Obama so enthusiastically endorsed. There will be no flowering of freedom and democracy; there will be an Islamic state.



I tried to tell you. More on this story. "Muslim Brotherhood, Islamist groups rally in Egypt's Tahrir Square," by Kristen Chick for The Christian Science Monitor, November 18:



Tens of thousands of Egyptians returned to Tahrir Square today to demand a quick transition to civilian rule. In a show of strength against the military junta's attempt to hold on to power, they challenged the military's ground rules for the new constitution and called for presidential elections by April 2012 – nearly a year earlier than the military's timeline.

The protest was called by the Muslim Brotherhood and other conservative Islamist groups, and the majority of the protesters appeared to be from Islamist groups. But enough Egyptians of all persuasions showed up that the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) will find it hard to ignore or dismiss their demands....



Many protesters held signs that read “One demand: the transfer of power.” But in a reminder of the deep divisions that could complicate the transition, followers of a conservative strain of Islam, known as salafis, also waved religious banners and shouted, “the Quran is our constitution.” Some protesters complained that salafis had jeopardized the united front against military rule by introducing a religious agenda off-putting to liberals and secularists....



The Muslim Brotherhood, confident that it will gain a strong position in parliament through elections scheduled to start Nov. 28, and eager to play a large role in writing the next constitution, rejected the document and called for the protest in a showdown with the military council.



Liberals, secularists face choice: Military or Islamists?



Many liberal and secular parties also rejected the military’s grasp at power. But they are also wary of Islamist groups, and worry that those groups will restrict freedoms if they have a large role in writing the constitution....





No kidding, really?



Some liberal and leftist party leaders and candidates say they are willing to put up with a larger-than-desirable role for the military in politics rather than rule by Islamists. Others refuse.

“I, as a Muslim, am afraid of the salafis. But I can’t say that the alternative is to approve of military rule,” said Hadeel Khater as she held signs against the military rule in Tahrir. “If a salafi comes to power through democracy, we can vote him out in the next election. But if a military dictator comes, there is no way to get him out."





Good luck getting the salafis out, Hadeel.

Egypt – Violent clashes leave 25 dead

Egypt – Violent clashes leave 25 dead




At least 25 people were killed yesterday during a demonstration in Cairo by Christians protesting about the destruction of a church building in Aswan Province on September 30.



Precise details are still emerging. The demonstration had been called because of concern about the lack of effective intervention by the security forces in Aswan and the attitude of the province's governor.



The protest, which started at around 4pm in the Shubra neighbourhood and ended in the Maspero area of downtown Cairo, was apparently disrupted by thugs. When protesters left Shubra they were attacked by people throwing stones. After some time the protesters continued their march. Eyewitness reports mention that residents of the neighbourhood of Bulaq then attacked the marchers. Once the protesters arrived in Maspero they were met by thugs who attacked them with stones and sticks. When some of the protesters threw stones back at these attackers the army intervened and attacked the marchers. The army used live ammunition and drove into the crowds with armoured personnel carriers.



Later in the evening there were reports of sporadic violence against Christian-owned businesses and fighting close to the Coptic Hospital, where most of the bodies of the dead and wounded had been brought.



Christians are alarmed at the disproportionate use of force. The official death toll is currently 25, allegedly including some members of the security forces. More than 200 were injured.



Egypt's ruling military council has called for a swift investigation into the violence.
