Senate Hearing Shows Security Holes in Screening Process for Refugees

https://www.numbersusa.com/sendfax

The Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration and the National Interest held a hearing yesterday to discuss Pres. Obama’s plan to increase the number of refugees to 110,000 next year, despite security risks that the vetting process presents. In the hearing Obama administration officials admitted that asylum seekers were granted refugee status in the U.S. solely on their own testimony and that refugees have been caught committing terrorism offenses in the U.S.
Pres. Obama reduced the refugee processing time from 18-24 months to just three months in order to reach his goal of bringing in 85,000 refugees in FY16 an increase from the annual admission of 70,000 refugees. Starting next month Pres. Obama said he would continue to increase the number of refugees admitted to 110,000 in FY17.
Last year FBI Director, James Comey, expressed concern that the U.S. does not have the ability to thoroughly screen the Syrian refugees for terrorist ties even through the lengthy 18-24-month process.
During the hearing Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) asked DHS Director León Rodríguez, “Is it true or false that the testimony of the applicant alone can be sufficient for approval?” Rodríguez replied, “there are cases where the testimony is not necessarily corroborated by documents…I am acknowledging that, yes, testimony can be the basis for the grant of a refugee…”
In his opening statement Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Immigration and The National Interest, noted that there are over 10,000 open terror investigations with at least one investigation opened in every state and that according to FBI Director, James Comey, it takes about 30 agents a week to monitor one terrorism suspect.
Sen. Sessions warned that, “the Director of National Intelligence, the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and the Secretary of Homeland Security have acknowledged that terrorists could infiltrate the refugee population. Their concerns are valid, as it is clear that terrorists have done so successfully in the past.”
Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) cited that fact that 18% of ISIS prosecutions in the U.S. have been of refugees or asylum seekers. Director Rodríguez confirmed that refugees have been caught committing terrorist activity in the U.S.

Islamic State video showing Jordanian pilot burned alive titled with Qur’an quote

KassasbehThe video is entitled, “Healing the Believers Chests.” That’s from the Qur’an: “Fight them, and Allah will punish them by your hands, cover them with shame, help you over them, heal the breasts of Believers.” (Qur’an 9:14) Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar, who years ago tried to murder students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the name of Islam and jihad, also referenced this verse when explaining his actions.
And then there is this story from Muhammad’s conquest of Khaybar: “Kinana b. al-Rabi`, who had the custody of the treasure of B. al-Nadir, was brought to the apostle who asked him about it. He denied that he knew where it was. A Jew came (T. was brought) to the apostle and said that he had seen Kinana going round a certain ruin every morning early. When the apostle said to Kinana, ‘Do you know that if we find you have it I shall kill you?’ he said Yes. The apostle gave orders that the ruin was to be excavated and some of the treasure was found. When he asked him about the rest he refused to produce it, so the apostle gave orders to al-Zubayr b. al-Awwam, ‘Torture him until you extract what he has,’ so he kindled a fire with flint and steel on his chest until he was nearly dead. Then the apostle delivered him to Muhammad b. Maslama and he struck off his head, in revenge for his brother Mahmud.” (Ibn Ishaq 515).
And Muhammad is depicted in a hadith as saying: “Certainly I decided to order the Mu’adh-dhin (call-maker) to pronounce Iqama and order a man to lead the prayer and then take a fire flame to burn all those who had not left their houses so far for the prayer along with their houses.” (Bukhari 1.11.626)
Not that this has anything to do with Islam.
“BREAKING NEWS: Burned alive in a cage: ISIS release video claiming to show horrifying murder of captured Jordanian pilot,” by John Hall, MailOnline, February 3, 2015:
Militants fighting for the Islamic State terror group in Syria and Iraq have released a video they claim shows Jordanian pilot Maaz al-Kassasbeh being burnt alive while locked in a cage.
The footage, which is titled ‘Healing the Believers Chests’ appears to show the captured airman wearing an orange jumpsuit as a trail of petrol leading up to the cage is seen being set alight.
Flames are seen quickly spreading to the cage where they completely engulf the helpless pilot in images that are far too distressing to publish.
Yesterday Jordan government spokesman Mohammed al-Momeni said the kingdom was doing ‘everything’ it could to secure the release of Kassasbeh, who was captured by ISIS after his F-16 fighter jet crashed in territory controlled by the militants in Syria in December.
However the statement came with an explicit threat that if ‘hero’ Kassasbeh came to any harm, Jordan would ‘quickly judge and sentence’ all those it holds on suspicion of being members of ISIS….

World News and Trends: Watch the oil chessboard

Printer-friendly version

"Is there any man, is there any woman, let me say any child here that does not know that the seed of war in the modern world is industrial and commercial rivalry?" So asked Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924), U.S. president during World War I.

This presidential observation is probably more true of the squabbles over black gold than any other material substance in the modern world. Even the present conflagration in Afghanistan is no exception. According to an article in The Guardian, "Afghanistan is as indispensable to the regional control of oil in Central Asia as Egypt was in the Middle East."
Afghanistan's northern neighbors contain abundant oil reserves that may prove critical to world supplies. The American military presence in Afghanistan is not only a crucial strategic blow against terrorism but may have another major benefit: the opportunity to secure ready access to Central Asian oil reserves as a countervailing measure against too much dependency on Islamic nations in the volatile Middle East.
As an editorial in The Washington Times points out: "Americans depend on fossil fuels for much of their material prosperity, even though much of that fossil fuel comes from unfriendly Islamic states in the Middle East. Almost 60 percent of American oil is shipped from overseas-Americans annually pay Saddam Hussein nearly $4 billion for the 700,000 barrels of oil that he provides them."
Therefore, the recent Russian-American cooperation against terrorism may also work to America's long-term advantage in securing adequate oil reserves. Russia is not a member of OPEC and therefore has the option of dragging its feet in reply to requests for substantial cuts in oil production.
The Times recently reported: "Russia [is] where oil output is increasing in leaps and bounds. The world has forgotten the contribution of Russian oil to global energy supply." Of course the Russians are as concerned about oil reserves as the Americans. A Daily Telegraph feature article recently observed: "For all the talk of international alliances and the future of Afghanistan, the real concern for Moscow is cementing its control of the oil supply."
America wants to build one or more oil pipelines in Central Asia. It has already invested $30 billion in developing oil in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Suddenly these faraway countries, difficult for most of us to spell and pronounce, take on an important role in our welfare. The Telegraph article continued: "Washington is now proposing a $3 billion pipeline from Azerbaijan, on the Caspian Sea, through Georgia to Turkey's Mediterranean Coast. U.S. companies could build a similar pipeline from Central Asia through Afghanistan to Karachi at half the cost, if the next Afghan government can guarantee its security."
Let's not forget China. The International Herald Tribune reported that in September "Prime Minister Zhu Rongji of China was in Moscow meeting with his Russian counterpart and signing off on a $1.7 billion feasibility study for a proposed 2,400-kilometer pipeline that by 2010 would deliver 30 million tons of oil to Chinese refineries each year." China's fast-growing economy of the past several years has created a voracious and expanding appetite for energy, and oil is one of the main sources.
Watch the oil chessboard as nations seek to secure their supplies and control world prices to their national advantage. Wars have been fought over oil, and the strivings over black gold may give us valuable clues as to how certain aspects of Bible prophecy may be fulfilled. Conflict Again in Iraq, Why It Matters

It’s Sunni versus Shiite once again in Iraq and this time America is not around to keep the peace. How far will sectarian strife escalate during this round of fighting in this ancient region?
A group of Arab fighters calling themselves the Islamic State of Iraq (ISIS) have come back in force in northern Iraq and taken control of key cities of Tikrit and Mosul. Thought to have been weakened and out of the game, this group has had a resurgence of support in northern Iraq and eastern Syria. Coupled with the utter collapse of Iraqi forces in that region, their display of force over the past few days has created the largest threat to stability and security in Iraq since the American-led overthrow of Saddam Hussein’s government in 2003. Without American ground troops in the region, the fate of the country is uncertain. It appears that predictions of the Iraqi army's lack of preparedness, coupled with the political weakness of the country's leadership have come true. Tens of thousands of civilians fleeing their homes is the usual, and unfortunate, result of these conflicts.
This current conflict is on our mind: last week we recorded an episode of Beyond Today  to air close to the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I in August. We showed in the program how the current conflicts in the Middle East—and Iraq and Syria in particular—are a result of the decisions made in the aftermath of that war. The lines of the current Middle East nations were drawn during the Paris Peace Conference after the war. The lines dividing the countries did not always take into consideration the religious and ethnic differences. What we are seeing in today’s news out of the region is part of that story.
The problem is compounded today because of a vacuum of power created by America’s reluctance to police this failed region. America is going through a crisis of confidence in its role as the sole superpower in today’s world. The American-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 “broke” the fragile glue that held the nation together. Since having pulled out all troops, the country was left to police itself. Unfortunately, as this week’s events show, Iraq does not have a strong enough army and government to effectively maintain control.
Jesus Christ listed the rise of conflict among nations (nation shall rise agains nation) in Matthew:24:6 as one of the signs of the end of this present age. The word nation here is ethnos and more accurately refers to ethnic strife between the smaller grouping of peoples within larger nations. These intractable conflicts are what drag larger nations into war against one another.
Bible prophecy shows the Middle East will again drag larger nations into the region. What we are seeing in Iraq today shows us how this could be done in the future. That is why what is happening today in Iraq and Syria matters.
