I’ve got to run some errands, so comment away on Trump’s trip to Mexico and upcoming immigration speech.
Sounds like Trump dominated in Mexico. Carlos Slim’s NYT is livid:

MEXICO CITY — If President Enrique Peña Nieto invited Donald J. Trump to visit Mexico for a dialogue in the interest of democracy, the message has fallen on deaf ears.
Instead, the predominant feeling here in the Mexican capital is one of betrayal.
“It’s a historic error,” said Enrique Krauze, a well-known historian. “You confront tyrants, you don’t appease them.”
On Mexico’s most popular morning television show on Wednesday, a livid Mr. Krauze likened the president’s meeting with Mr. Trump to the decision by Neville Chamberlain, then the British prime minister, to sit down with Hitler in Munich in 1938.
“It isn’t brave to meet in private with somebody who has insulted and denigrated” Mexicans, Mr. Krauze said. “It isn’t dignified to simply have a dialogue.”
Yes, many Mexicans say, it was Mr. Trump who offended the people of Mexico with his disparaging comments about migrants and his promises to build a border wall paid for by Mexico.
But for many Mexicans, the surprising invitation from Mr. Peña Nieto — who has likened Mr. Trump’s language to that of Hitler and Mussolini in the past — is even worse.
Newspapers, television stations, social media and all manner of national communication were awash in vitriol at the idea of a meeting between the two men. …
Still, analysts on both sides of the border said they were mystified about why Mr. Peña Nieto received Mr. Trump.
There is “unanimity that this is a giant farce,” said Jesús Silva-Herzog Márquez, a professor and columnist for Reforma, a Mexico City newspaper.
Mr. Peña Nieto “compared Mr. Trump to Mussolini and Hitler,” he added, “and now we invite Mussolini, we are going to negotiate with Hitler when he hasn’t even won the election.”

After the two men met, in what Mr. Trump described as an “excellent” occasion, they appeared at a very civil news conference. Mr. Peña Nieto promised to work with whichever candidate was elected and spoke about the importance of the relationship with the United States.
“I shared with him the fact that there have been misunderstandings or affirmations that hurt and affected Mexicans in their perception of his candidacy,” Mr. Peña Nieto said he told Mr. Trump. “The Mexican people felt aggravated for comments that were formulated, but I am certain that he has a genuine interest in building a relationship that would lead us to provide better conditions for our people”
While Mr. Trump hardly offered Mexicans the sort of apology that many had hoped for, he was a far more chastened candidate than Mexicans have come to expect. He repeatedly lauded their hard work, and spoke of his “tremendous feeling” for Mexicans.
“They are amazing people,” he noted.
In the end, he called Mr. Peña Nieto a friend.
“I don’t see how that helped Peña Nieto,” said Shannon K. O’Neil, a Mexico expert at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. “If the reason Peña was inviting Trump was to stand up to him and show his strength in front of somebody who has attacked Mexicans, then he failed.
Other critics were less kind.
“To put it mildly, I think it was the biggest humiliation a Mexican president has suffered on his own territory in the last 50 years,” said Esteban Illades, editor of Nexos, a magazine in Mexico. ”He not only managed to make Donald Trump look presidential, which is an incredibly hard thing to do, he managed to forgive Donald Trump even though he didn’t actually offer an apology in the first place.”

Keep in mind that Pena Nieto is, lately, the arch-enemy of the financial savior of the New York Times, Carlos Slim. The current president of Mexico finally pushed through anti-monopoly legislation that has knocked, last I checked, about $20 billion off Slim’s net worth.

Editorial: Police Shootings Continue, Obama Blames White Racism

Not only are Police being denied Due Process and Freedom of Speech, but as we heard in the Dallas "commemoration" the unproven institutional racism of whites is blamed, even though the VICTIMS, not the shooter, were white, and Hispanic.
In Louisiana, the shooter was also not white, but two of the victims were and one was Black.

Unfortunately, there is also white guilt, also known as white ehthnomasochism, in play here.

Slams through Plastic Gun Ban Reauthorization

The battle continues, and now moves to the Senate

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
Someone once said that the only thing anyone ever learns from history is that no one ever learns anything from history.
Straight from bumbling the shut down, the House leadership yesterday, by a voice vote, slammed through a straight ten-year reauthorization of the poorly drafted 1988 plastic gun ban.
Read GOA’s oped on this subject in this morning’s USA Today.
At least, argue House Republicans, this “straight authorization” of a bad law will prohibit New York Democrat Chuck Schumer from using the reauthorization as a vehicle to enact new, more extensive gun control.
Maybe.
But the House leadership has now handed Schumer a legislative vehicle for passing his gun control.  This means he and Harry Reid could choose to take their ban on 3-D printer guns -– which, by the way, would also ban many metal gun manufacturers -– and send it back to the House.
Just hours after the House reauthorized the anti-gun law, Schumer held a press event in support of expanding the plastic gun ban.
If they do this, then Boehner and his leadership team will once again be swimming in a river of pain –- inflicted by a liberal media that finally sees an opportunity for passing its much-desired gun control agenda.
So the first thing we’re doing is to organize a Senate filibuster of any Schumer effort to pass and/or expand the House bill.
Given that the Senate is currently bogged down in a fight over the defense authorization legislation, we may be able to make it very difficult for Schumer to use the House-passed bill as a vehicle for new gun control.     
So please stay tuned.  We thank you for all your activism up to this point.  But just realize that this battle is not over yet.
GOA IN THE MEDIA
Meanwhile, GOA Director of Communications Erich Pratt authored the Opposing View this morning in USA Today.
Among other things, Pratt argued that the plastic gun ban is an unconstitutional infringement of our liberties that is not only ineffective, but could eventually be expanded by an anti-gun administration to ban even more guns.
But what about the issue of smuggling guns onto planes?
Pratt says that renewing a ban on plastic firearms will “not stop criminals from making them or stealing them,” any more than Chicago's gun restrictions have been effective in stopping shootings there.
Not only that, says Pratt, “smuggling guns onto planes will still be against the law, with or without a plastic gun ban.” And airport X-ray machines will still be able to detect them.
Bottom line, says Pratt, Congress solved the problem of terrorists carrying weapons onto planes after 9/11 -- not through additional gun bans, but by “allowing pilots to use guns to defend themselves and their passengers.”

Whatever you do on immigration, don't give out work permits to millions of illegal aliens to do construction and service jobs while there are millions of unemployed Americans who are standing in line for just those kinds of jobs.

The Gang of 8's plan is absolutely wrong because it puts 7 million illegal alien workers at the front of the jobs line ahead of 20 million Americans who can't find a full-time job. Whatever you do on amnesty -- and I'm against it -- don't give out any work permits to illegal aliens until the American unemployment line is empty.

I know there is a rally for illegal aliens at the Capitol today. But there ought to be a rally for the 20 million Americans who can't find a full-time job (or for the millions of unemployed Americans). If the Gang of 8 could look out on the mall and see all those Americans who can't get a job, would they really go through with a bill to immediately give work permits to 7 million illegal-alien workers?







Talking point:



The U.S. does NOT have a labor shortage. The Gang of 8 thinks we do because its whole immigration bill is based on adding millions more foreign workers while 20 million Americans who want a full-time job can't find one. The bill should be cutting immigration -- not increasing it.







Talking point:



Please consider the unemployed Americans who will be most harmed by giving millions of work permits to illegal workers. Black Americans, Hispanics, young people, and the less-educated are far more likely to be unemployed in the United States than other groups. Anyone who falls into a combination of those categories is in particular trouble, especially since they get little attention from politicians who insist on prioritizing illegal workers over unemployed citizens and legal immigrants.

Only Fox News Concerned With Obama's Census Bureau Coup

The Obama administration revealed Thursday that whoever ends up being director of the Census Bureau, a position yet to be filled, he or she will be required to work closely with the White House.
This is a departure from the autonomy the Bureau had under President Bush, and is worrisome given the census which will be taken next year.
Despite this revelation by Congressional Quarterly on Thursday the only major media outlet which gave this much attention was Fox News.
Before we get there, here's what CQ reported:

The Obama administration acknowledged Thursday that the as-yet-unnamed Census Bureau director will have a direct line to the White House but sought to define the relationship as one in which the director would “work closely with” rather than report to President Obama’s senior staff.
After black and Hispanic leaders raised concerns over Commerce Secretary-nominee Judd Gregg ’s commitment to core functions of the Census Bureau, a senior White House official told CQ on Wednesday that the director would report directly to the White House.
That brought fire Thursday from Republicans, who accused the White House of attempting to gain advantage in the politically delicate process of counting Americans and of violating the law by circumventing the Commerce secretary. The decennial census is used to determine the apportionment of congressional districts among the states and federal funding for numerous programs. [...]
House Republicans are incensed about the prospect of the Census Bureau director reporting directly to the White House staff, which is led by former Rep. Rahm Emanuel (2003-09), a longtime political operative and onetime chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
“Any attempt by the Obama administration to circumvent the census process for their political benefit will be met with fierce opposition as this ill-conceived proposal undermines a constitutionally obligated process that speaks to the very heart of our democracy,” said California Rep. Darrell Issa , the top Republican on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
Issa and North Carolina Rep. Patrick McHenry, the top Republican on the subcommittee that oversees census issues, sent a letter to Obama detailing their concern that such a move might circumvent existing law and be used for partisan gain.
“Requiring the census director to report directly to the White House and placing responsibility for administration of the Bureau outside the Department of Commerce may even violate federal law,” they wrote. “According to Title 13 of the U.S. Code, the Bureau is to be administered ‘within, and under the jurisdiction of, the Department of Commerce.’ ” [...]
“The constitutionally mandated decennial census needs to be fair, accurate and trusted. By circumventing the secretary of Commerce’s oversight of the Census Bureau and handing it directly to a political operative such as Mr. Emanuel, you are severely jeopardizing the fairness and accuracy of the 2010 census,” Issa and McHenry wrote.

Seems like big news, right? Apparently not, as from what I can tell, the New York Times completely ignored it. Ditto USA Today. The Washington Post published a couple of paragraphs about it at the end of an unrelated piece on page A15 Friday.
