GOP Insurgent Rubio Has The Right Enemies—But The Wrong, Treason Lobby, Friends

The times they are a-changing on the grassroots right. After years of drinking the neoconservatives' Kool-Aid and eating their freedom fries, Middle America seems to be realizing that blind support for the GOP got the country right in the mess it’s in today—government bigger than ever, mass unemployment, unchecked immigration, and Barack Obama as president.

Tea Parties, defunding ACORN, auditing the Fed, attacking Sotomayor for her La Raza Agenda, attacking Obama for his anti-white agenda, Members of Congress screaming at the President for lying about health care and illegal immigrants, even mutterings about secession—all of this would have been unheard of with Bush and Delay in charge. But today it’s commonplace on conservative talk radio and on the blogosphere.

As yet, there is a dearth of political and institutional leadership to guide this nascent movement. Needless to say, the Republican Party Establishment is promoting safe, bland candidates for office rather than new Tom Tancredos or Virgil Goodes. However, the Tea Partyers/ Town Hallers appear to be standing up to the party hacks. This is gratifying—but beneath the anti-establishment veneer of some of the Tea Partyers’ Beltway allies is the same old Open Borders particle board.





The most prominent “anti-Establishment” candidate: Marco Rubio, the white Cuban former speaker of Florida House of Representatives, who is running against former Florida Governor Charlie Crist for the appalling Mel Martinez’s soon-to-be vacated U.S. Senate seat.


“Anti-tax ‘tea party’ conservatives are struggling with the Republican Party establishment by backing insurgent candidates, political activists say.

One example is in Florida, where the anti-tax and limited government advocacy group FreedomWorks [more on them later—WW] is backing former state House Speaker Marco Rubio for U.S. Senate against the candidate preferred by GOP centrists, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist.

Besides Crist’s support for amnesty, conservatives are still furious over his underhanded promotion of John McCain during the Florida primary:

Naturally, the National Republican Senatorial Committee endorsed Crist.

On the surface, Rubio does indeed seem an improvement over Mel Martinez on immigration. His platform states:

“Legal immigration has been a great source of strength and prosperity for America, but I believe illegal immigration threatens the foundation of this system. If I had been in the Senate at the time, I would have opposed the McCain-Kennedy bill. I believe we must fix our immigration system by first securing the border, fixing the visa and entry process and opposing amnesty in any reform.”

But “fixing the visa and entry process” could mean a lot of things—including massively increasing legal immigration. Remember how Bush tried to portray amnesty as “immigration reform”.

And Rubio gave a disturbing hint of what this meant in a convoluted interview with the website Red County. He absurdly accused Democrats and labor unions of being against legal immigration, while Republicans (he asserted) support it.

Rubio must be either completely ignorant of the sellout of union workers by Big Labor, or he is promoting a guest worker program—the only aspect of legal immigration that labor unions oppose.

Even more ominously, Rubio blamed the Republican’s “tone” on immigration for alienating Hispanic voters.

Even Rubio’s record on illegal immigration is dubious. In 2008, patriotic Florida state legislators proposed over a dozen bills to crack down on illegal immigration, but as Speaker Rubio stalled them in the House:

“Florida lawmakers looking to pass bills targeted at curbing illegal immigration faced one major hurdle this session—convincing South Florida legislators, who hold key leadership positions in the House and Senate, to support their cause.

Without the backing of House Speaker Marco Rubio, the first Cuban-American to hold the position, the bills failed to get any major play in their committees. Six weeks into the session, a three-hour workshop was held on the six House bills, but even that failed to produce its desired intent of combining the bills into one larger committee bill.

'Speaker Rubio outlined the priorities of the session and this didn't fall under that list,' said Rivera, one of Rubio's lieutenants.”

Finally, Rubio was the object of a fawning National Review cover story recently which even worse, was written by the unspeakable John J. Miller—a very bad sign indeed. [Rubio Rising The Florida GOP has a new star, Sept 7, 2009(Free link)]

Rubio is not the only anti-establishment candidate in the race. Former New Hampshire Senator Bob Smith, who has since moved to Florida, is also running. Unlike Rubio, he is making stopping illegal immigration a top priority. According to the Jacksonville Observer

“During a recent appearance on the Jacksonville Observer Radio Show, Smith made it clear that he was not pulling punches against Crist or Rubio. He noted that his campaign is going to include a significant focus on dealing with illegal immigration. On the issue of so-called amnesty, Smith replies: ‘No, no, and hell no!’” [Rubio and Smith to Participate in Senate Candidate Forum, by Austin Cassidy, The Jacksonville Observer, October 19, 2009]

That said, Smith’s record on immigration in the Senate in the 1980s and early 1990s leaves much to be desired. But it is clear that he is currently the only candidate in the race who is making stopping mass immigration a series issue.


What’s going on here? The main problem is that the same old Open Borders Beltway “conservative” operations like the Club for Growth and Grover Norquist’s Americans for Tax Reform, both Bush lapdogs a few years ago, are now struggling to get control of the Tea Party movement.

And they’re getting somewhere. The most disturbing development: the re-ascension of former Republican Whip Dick Armey. Armey’s organization Freedom Works claims to have helped organize the 9-12 protest against big government and to be creating a grassroots network of 800,000 conservative activists.

Both Armey and Freedom Works have terrible records on immigration. A quick search of immigration at the Freedom Works site shows dozens of articles, panels, and press releases supporting amnesty and more immigration.

Most disgracefully, Armey attacked Tom Tancredo as the “cheerleader of jerkiness in the immigration debate” and accused Pat Buchanan of being “content to be a rock star” for “10 percent of the most militant voters in America.” [Republican blasts party's guest-worker plan, McClatchy Newspapers, September 28, 2006]

Armey also promotes political correctness on racial issues. During the 2008 campaign, he provided ammunition for the left by calling white working class citizens the “Bubba vote” that would not support Obama because of his race. According to Armey, it was “deplorable, but … real," that “an awful lot of people in America…are not emotionally prepared to vote for a black man.” [Armey 'Bubba vote' to hurt Obama, by Richard Wolf and Martha T. In an age when Joe Wilson became a hero to Middle Americans when the Left called him a racist for calling out Obama’s lies on illegal immigration, it is absurd that political correct Open Borders advocates could aspire to lead the patriot movement against Obama.


With Bush and McCain discredited, and a Middle America fed up with the Obama administration, the Tea Party patriots have an unprecedented opportunity to take their country back.

But first, they need to keep their movement out of the hands of Beltway faux radicals like Norquist, Armey, and their ilk.

The pro-amnesty, open-borders groups are pouring in millions of dollars to fund an Amnesty March this Sunday on the National Mall in Washington D.C. The "March For America" is receiving support from business, religious, social and ethnic groups across the country and will help transport close to 100,000 people to the nation's capital.

Just last week, Pres. Obama met with pro-amnesty leaders at the White House and also met with Senators Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) who are working on a bi-partisan comprehensive immigration reform bill. Pro-amnesty leaders urged the President to make a move on immigration before this weekend's Amnesty March, but they came away from their talks with the President discouraged.
The central theme of Sunday's Amnesty March will be to provide citizenship for the nation's 12 million illegal aliens. It will begin with a non-denominational prayer service followed by the demonstration on the Mall between the Washington Monument and Capitol Building.
Organizers for the Amnesty March are providing transportation for marchers and have a website dedicated to helping marchers organize before Sunday. New reports estimate 700 buses will be heading to Washington this weekend.

For weeks, various grassroots leaders of tea parties have been asking NumbersUSA if there is anything to the rumors that former Congressman Dick Armey is soft on amnesty and the costs of illegal immigration. If he were, that would be an unsettling situation for the vast majority of people at tea party events who oppose both vehemently.
Well, today, Dick Armey settled the question. No need for rumors now.
Mr. Armey -- labeled as the "uber-organizer of the tea party movement" by a reporter today -- seems to have labeled as "goofy" most of the grassroots citizens attending tea party events.
Armey showed his disdain in a speech at the National Press Club for all those who oppose comprehensive amnesties for millions of illegal aliens and who oppose importing millions of foreign workers during a time of high unemployment.
But this is in keeping with his record in Congress. (See below for a thorough analysis.)
During his time in Congress (1985-2002), Mr. Armey's positions on immigration almost always appeared to be much more shaped by the desires of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for low-wage labor subsidized by taxpayers than by the needs of the average taxpayer and worker.
Today, Mr. Armey showed that he disagrees with the majority of Republican Members of Congress who oppose amnesty and who call for enforcement to cause illegal aliens to go home:
In language that will likely be recalled in the upcoming debate over immigration, Armey minced no words in condemning Republicans over their stance.
"Who in the Republican Party was the genius who said now that we have identified the fastest-growing demographic in America, let's go out and alienate them? This is a nation of immigrants. ... There is room in America," he said.

In Dick Armey's world, standing up for unemployed American workers and taxpayers against costly foreign-worker competition is alienating to a fast-growing group of voters and, thus, should be avoided.
This kind of attitude while in Congress led Mr. Armey to take immigration actions that earned him a NumbersUSA grade so low that only 10% of Republicans currently in Congress have a worse career report card than Armey's. Take a look here: http://www.numbersusa.com/content/my/congress/915/reportcard
TANCREDO OR ARMEY: WHICH IMMIGRATION POSITION MORE POPULAR IN THE TEA PARTY
Lest anyone be unclear about where he stands on immigration, Mr. Armey today delivered a resounding condemnation of retired Congressman Tom Tancredo:
"When I was Republican leader, I saw to it that Tom Tancredo could not get on a stage because I saw how destructive he was," Armey said of the anti-immigration former congressman. "Republicans have to get off this goofiness."
It is good that Armey is owning up to what we knew on the inside: Dick Armey used his power as House Majority Leader to promote amnesties for illegal aliens and to block the efforts of "back-benchers" in his Party to combat illegal immigration. Armey is a key reason why it took so long until the majority of Republican votes in Congress became anti-illegal-immigration.
While Armey most likely is sincere in his advocacy for smaller government and lower spending, he clearly makes exceptions for immigration -- which is just another corporate welfare program that forces taxpayers (and workers who compete with the foreign workers) to subsidize the employers.
When Tancredo arrived in Congress in 1999, he could barely get any kind of hearing among Republicans to represent U.S. citizens' rising frustration over illegal immigration. It wasn't until Armey left in 2003 that Tancredo was able to build up his 100-member immigration caucus and turn the House Republican Conference into a bulwark against illegal immigration (although it still has never stood up for U.S. workers against massive legal importation of foreign workers).
TEA PARTY ACTIVISTS HAVE OUT-GROWN ARMEY AND HAVE A MORE PRINCIPLED STANCE
Tea party activists have to pay attention to what Dick Armey says because he and his Washington-based, non-profit advocacy group, Freedom Works, were incredibly important to the early growth of the tea party movement last year, pumping in big money and logistical support to fan the flames of citizen discontent to create a prairie fire of political rebellion across the country.
But will the grassroots allow Armey to speak for them -- especially on the need for high immigration and rewards for illegal aliens?
As much as they may appreciate some of what Armey has done for the movement, his performance today at the Press Club should serve notice to most of the grassroots that they have to distance themselves as quickly as possible from Armey's strong inclinations toward Chamber of Commerce open-borders politics.
When he makes the statement that the country has plenty of room for massive immigration, it almost sounds like Armey is saying that the tea party movement either doesn't care how much that costs taxpayers, or that he is suggesting there ARE no costs.
My experience with local tea party leaders -- and a number of national ones -- is that they are not at all willing to avert their eyes to the costs of immigration.
Let me pause to say a word about NumbersUSA's relationship with the tea party movement. That movement has no official connections with us nor we with them. The tea parties cannot be held responsible for anything we do, nor can we be held responsible for what they do. We are very different entities with intersecting interests when it comes to immigration policies.
As regular readers of this blog know, NumbersUSA includes large numbers of environmentalists concerned about what immigration is doing to our country's natural heritage, and tea party members concerned about what immigration is costing taxpayers, and social justice enthusiasts concerned about what immigration is doing to the country's poor working classes (especially to Black and Hispanic Americans), and lovers of individual liberty concerned about what immigration is doing to the personal mobility and quality of life in our nation's communities, and many others.
NumbersUSA attempts to inform all these varied groups across the political spectrum as to how immigration affects what they care most about.
So, I have been most pleased to provide information to tea parties across the country about why they can't be true to their principles without addressing immigration. For example, I have made sure that they know that federal government records show that:
The U.S. this last decade has been adding a net of about 1.25 million (legal and illegal) immigrants each year to our local communities.
53% of immigrant households with children are so poor that taxpayers have to subsidize them with at least one form of welfare.
Anybody who advocates an open door for immigration is advocating a lot of extra costs. Even setting aside welfare, immigrants have not come close to being able to pay the taxes it takes to provide the extra roads, streets, bridges, water and sewer systems, schools and hospitals to accommodate them without deteriorating the quality of infrastructure and services for the existing population.
The result is mounting pressures for more government, more taxes and more redistribution of incomes.
None of that plays very well with the tea parties' vision. While Dick Armey wants immigration to be treated as a social issue with no place in the tea parties, most of the grassroots in the movement know well that immigration is a huge fiscal responsibility issue that can't be ignored -- no matter how much Mr. Armey's corporate benefactors want the foreign labor to keep pouring in.

As part of the House Republican leadership that controlled the U.S. House, Mr. Armey usually tried to resist the efforts of the majority of Republican Members who wanted less immigration and more immigration enforcement. But sometimes when the "back-benchers" were able to force votes on some enforcement measures, Armey tended to vote with them on the floor of the House.
NumbersUSA's computerized system, in weighing all immigration actions taken by Mr. Armey over 18 years, issued him an overall Immigration-Reduction Grade of "C-minus" for his entire career.
The primary reason he got that high of a grade is that he was quite good on immigration in his early years:
IN THE EARLY YEARS: Way back in 1990, Armey voted against a small amnesty.
BUT LATER: Armey voted for other small amnesties in 1997, 2001 and 2002, and he was part of the leadership that pushed these amnesties to a vote. Fortunately, NumbersUSA activists were numerous and forceful enough to stop the 2001 and 2002 amnesties. Mr. Armey left Congress before Pres. Bush's several failed giant amnesty attempts.
IN THE EARLY YEARS: In 1990, soon after arriving, Armey voted against expansions in Chain Migration, the Visa Lottery and importation of foreign workers. These were all pro-worker positions that would have held down taxpayer costs.
BUT LATER: Armey was among a minority of Republicans in 1996 who helped Pres. Clinton kill the legislation of Rep. Lamar Smith that would have eliminated Chain Migration and the Lottery and would have reduced importation of unneeded foreign job competition. Armey's side only narrowly prevailed in the House.
Because of Armey's and the narrow majority's actions in Congress that day, the United States has millions more foreign workers and government-dependent residents today than otherwise would have been the case if the provisions promoted by Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) and Sen. Alan Simpson (R-Wyoming) had passed.
When I saw that Mr. Armey was playing such a big part in the tea parties last year, I despaired that this was not truly a grassroots movement but would be a tool of the worst of the corporate classes.
Mr. Armey's performance here in Washington today confirmed why my fears were justified.
But if the tea parties continue to attack the fiscal irresponsibility of current immigration policies as being the truly goofy stance, you'll know that they are truly grassroots and that Mr. Armey and all his corporate money don't control them.
