Send Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) After Sanctuary City Mayors—Their Aiding And Abetting Is A Federal Crime!

In my ongoing series of posts on the issue of what President Donald J. Trump can do in the area of immigration law enforcement and policy I am giving the incoming President insider advice on what action to take. In the latest post, I identified several criminals aiding and abetting illegal aliens to enter and remain in the United States, including the sitting Governor of California, Jerry Brown, the President of the University of California (UC), Janet Napolitano, and several major and minor functionaries in the UC system. [Target California, Federale, Federale Blog, November 13, 2016]
In my first post I warned about the allies and enemies President Trump will have in the immigration bureaucracy. [President Trump Will Have Foes In Immigration Bureaucracy—But Also Friends. They Can Help Him Win, Federale, VDARE.com, April 21, 2016]
treason_and_sabotage_immigration_bureaucrats_acted_to_protect_san_bernardino_terrorists_vdare_-_premier_news_outlet_for_patriotic_immigration_reform_-_2016-11-16_00-32-28Importantly I warned about the vicious enemies he will have in U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).  I have confirmed that most employees there are apoplectic over the Trump victory.  One senior USCIS employee even warned some employees not to be enthusiastic about Trump, claiming that Obama was still president, and his policies, rather than the law, will hold sway.  Well, warning to her, and it is a her, not one of the traitors I identified in the San Bernardino fiasco, but a close associate of that triumvirate of evil. [Treason and Sabotage: Immigration Bureaucrats Acted To Protect San Bernardino Terrorists, Federale, VDARE.com,, July 5, 2016]
In the spirit of criminalizing the Democrat Party, I again propose using the United States Code, Title 18, Section 1324, against those who think, like Hillary Clinton, they are above the law.  In this case, three big city mayors, Ed Lee of San Francisco, Rahm Emmanuel of Chicago, and Bill De Blasio of New York City, besides mouthing platitudes about immigrants and illegal aliens, actually take concrete action to aid, abet, and assist illegal aliens to remain in the United States.
All three of these big city Democrat mayors have openly stated that their cities are a “sanctuary” for illegal aliens.  One would think that admitting to a crime in public was not a good idea, but none are very bright, and interestingly for Democrat politicians, none are attorneys, which might explain their foolish statements.  In the law enforcement business, this is called a confession.
Now Los Angeles mayor Gil Garcetti has also publicly stated that Los Angeles is a sanctuary city, but Garcetti is a lawyer, and is covered by the fact that Los Angeles does not take any affirmative action to specifically aid illegal aliens to remain in there.  LA City and County refuse in most cases to assist with immigration law enforcement, but such assistance is not legally required, as the Constitution prohibits the Federal government from forcing a State to assist it.
SEATTLE — Democratic mayors of major US cities that have long had cool relationships with federal immigration officials say they’ll do all they can to protect residents from deportation, despite President-elect Donald Trump’s vows to withhold potentially millions of dollars in taxpayer money if they don’t cooperate.
New York’s Bill de Blasio, Chicago’s Rahm Emanuel and Seattle’s Ed Murray are among those in “sanctuary cities” who have tried to soothe immigrant populations worried about Trump’s agenda.
[Mayors Pledge To Defend ‘Sanctuary Cities’ Against Trump, by AP Staff Writer, New York Post, November 15, 2016]
However, San Francisco, Chicago, and New York, among other cities, actively assist illegal aliens in remaining in the United States.  The primary method is an identification card specifically designed for illegal aliens.  In fact, New York City is now planning to destroy all records of those cards to protect illegal aliens.
800NEW YORK (AP) — When New York City launched the nation’s biggest municipal ID card program last year, advocates said it would help people living in the U.S. illegally to venture out of the shadows.
But since Donald Trump was elected president, city officials are instead fielding questions about whether the cards could put those same people at greater risk of being deported.
The city has vowed to protect cardholders’ personal records and might even delete them using a kind of self-destruct provision that allows for the information to be destroyed at the end of the year. At least one state lawmaker has criticized that idea, saying it could make it impossible to trace people if they have obtained cards fraudulently.
[After Trump Win, NYC Could Destroy Immigrant ID Card Data, AP Staff Writter, AP News.com, November 15, 2016]
That, of course, would be illegal as well, a violation of Title 18 United States Code, Section 1519, Destruction of Evidence, also known as the Enron Statute, among other laws as well.
It is very brazen of De Blasio especially, given his myriad legal problems and ongoing investigations, but it will give the New Yorker Trump cover to come at De Blasio on illegal immigration as well as De Blasio’s corruption.
But for De Blasio, Lee, and Emmanuel, their main problem is the open flouting of Federal immigration law.  And it is especially delicious as in the last few years the Left has been arguing that only the Federal government can have an immigration policy, now they claim that every city or State can have its own immigration policy.  However, cities and States can not have their own immigration policy, nor are they allowed to aid, abet, and assist illegal aliens to remain in the United States.
To further his immigration enforcement policy, and in States where there is little or no political downside, Trump should immediately order Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) to initiate investigations into the municipal identification cards provided by San Francisco, New York City, and Chicago, then quickly have the Department of Justice bring criminal charges against those city employees involved in the issuance of the cards and the mayors, and give Emmanuel, Lee, and De Blasio the perp walk they so richly deserve.  Combine this with a prosecution of Hillary Clinton and her family and associates, and the Democrat Party will be finished.  There might even be a legal basis to use the RICO statute to declare the Democrat Party a criminal organization.
A criminal prosecution, not only of the individuals, but of the city governments themselves, would also enable President Trump to cut off all Federal funds from the cities involved, as usually restrictions on funding is directly related to the purpose of the funds, but that principle does not apply to criminal actors.
But President Trump must strike quickly. good strategy would see these indictments and perp walks soon after a Hillary Clinton indictment and perp walk.  Strike while the iron is hot! Shock and awe the Democrats into submission.

Catholic Layman Says: Despite The U.S. Bishops, Church Doctrine Is Not Pro-Immigration!

A timely post from www.vdare.com about Catholicism and immigration. This follows this post about Houston's demographics. This follows this post about the TV show "Designated Survivor." This follows this post about rap songs referencing Donald Trump.

Catholic Layman Says: Despite The U.S. Bishops, Church Doctrine Is Not Pro-Immigration!

Think about this:
If a fellow shows up at your door, penniless, starving and thirsty, and beaten by thugs, the Catholic Church says you have a normative Christian duty to help him. Consider the rancher in Arizona who gives drink to the thirsty illegals who cross his path in the desert.
But if the same fellow shows up at your door with 25 relatives and demands food and water and threatens you if he doesn’t think you provided enough, then you bolt the door and grab your rifle.
You have a greater duty to protect your family. The Church says they are your primary obligation.
The latter, not the former, describes immigration, legal and particularly illegal.
Of course, to hear the Catholic Left tell it, Church teaching demands that you surrender your house to the mob—i.e. throw open the borders, regardless of the effect on the federal and state treasuries, crime rates and American cultural coherence. They quote biblical texts, from the Infant Savior’s flight to Egypt with Mary and Joseph to the teaching of Christ on welcoming “strangers,” in a way that resembles the irrational fundamentalism of erroneous Protestant scriptural exegesis. And they ask the clichéd question: WWJD?
As a Catholic myself, I say: bunk. Whatever the radical left and their feminist nuns, collarless priests or mitred mandarins in the sexually corrupt Catholic chanceries may say, Catholic teaching does not demand, and has never demanded, that a country open its borders to limitless numbers of immigrants.
Nor does it confer upon “migrants” an unfettered right to travel wherever they wish, whenever they wish.
Far from suggesting that a nation must throw open its doors, the Church says political authorities can control and even stop immigration if they judge it necessary.
Here are the relevant passages in the Catechism—the official text of the Church’s teaching:
The more prosperous nations are obliged, to the extent they are able, to welcome the foreigner in search of the security and the means of livelihood which he cannot find in his country of origin. Public authorities should see to it that the natural right is respected that places a guest under the protection of those who receive him.
Political authorities, for the sake of the common good for which they are responsible, may make the exercise of the right to immigrate subject to various juridical conditions, especially with regard to the immigrants` duties toward their country of adoption. Immigrants are obliged to respect with gratitude the material and spiritual heritage of the country that receives them, to obey its laws and to assist in carrying civic burdens. [Emphasis added]
Similarly, the U.S. Catholic bishops in their official teaching (as opposed to what they lobby for) outline three principles of immigration. The first is that “People have the right to migrate to sustain their lives and the lives of their families.” The third: “A country must regulate its borders with justice and mercy.”
But the second principle we don’t hear much about. Here it is:
‘While individuals have the right to move in search of a safe and humane life, no country is bound to accept all those who wish to resettle there. By this principle the Church recognizes that most immigration is ultimately not something to celebrate. Ordinarily, people do not leave the security of their own land and culture just to seek adventure in a new place or merely to enhance their standard of living. Instead, they migrate because they are desperate and the opportunity for a safe and secure life does not exist in their own land…
Because there seems to be no end to poverty, war, and misery in the world, developed nations will continue to experience pressure from many peoples who desire to resettle in their lands. Catholic social teaching is realistic: While people have the right to move, no country has the duty to receive so many immigrants that its social and economic life are jeopardized.
For this reason, Catholics should not view the work of the federal government and its immigration control as negative or evil. ‘[Emphasis added]
When was the last time you heard that “[m]ost immigration is not something to celebrate”?
But the U.S. Conference Of Catholic Bishops’ Justice for Immigrants campaign website does not even mention “respecting the law”—let alone “the material and spiritual heritage of the country that receives them”. Nor do the bishops stress it in their endless public pontifications.
Authentic Catholic teaching on immigration is not leftist. Rather, it is rooted in human reason and reality, meaning the way things are versus the way we wish them to be —as is all Catholic teaching, which is conservative by its nature.
Indeed, in noting that “no country has the duty to receive so many immigrants that its social and economic life are jeopardized,” the U.S. bishops themselves acknowledge the right of a nation to defend itself—as well as the duty of the state to provide for the common good of its own citizens.
Thus, we may rightly and justly send illegal aliens home, not least because they have not obeyed American immigration laws.
Yet when the U.S. bishops discuss “justice,” they don’t often mention that—or this item in Catholic teaching on justice: the state’s duty “to protect its subjects in their rights and to govern the whole body for the common good.”
That segues into the duties of citizens, where I have recourse to the Catechism again:
Those subject to authority should regard those in authority as representatives of God, who has made them stewards of his gifts… “Be subject for the Lord`s sake to every human institution. . . . Live as free men, yet without using your freedom as a pretext for evil; but live as servants of God.”[Pet 2:13,16]Their loyal collaboration includes the right, and at times the duty, to voice their just criticisms of that which seems harmful to the dignity of persons and to the good of the community.
It is the duty of citizens to contribute along with the civil authorities to the good of society in a spirit of truth, justice, solidarity, and freedom. The love and service of one`s country follow from the duty of gratitude and belong to the order of charity. Submission to legitimate authorities and service of the common good require citizens to fulfill their roles in the life of the political community.
Submission to authority and co-responsibility for the common good make it morally obligatory to pay taxes, to exercise the right to vote, and to defend one`s country. [Emphases in original].
Upshot is, citizens are enjoined to be patriots. They must love and defend their country, and are obliged to pay taxes, vote and rectify unjust laws and living conditions.
That raises a few questions about the millions of Mexicans who simply abandoned their country, not because they didn’t have work but because they wanted to improve their living standards, and even worse, endangered the lives of their children by dragging them across the desert.
Were they not obliged by Catholic teaching to stay in Mexico—to become active politically and to fight for economic justice from the ruling kleptocracy?
What of the Mexican authorities who never cease lecturing Americans about their duties to illegal aliens? Is the Mexican president and his legislature governing the country for the “common good” in surrendering to the depredations of the drug cartels?
Certainly, Mexican political authorities sin in permitting citizens to live in squalor, thus encouraging them to cross the border in defiance of American law. Certainly, they sin when they provide instructional manuals on how to evade the authorities. Certainly, they sin by instructing Mexican-Americans that they are Mexicans no matter what their citizenship.(“You`re Mexicans — Mexicans who live north of the border,” President Ernesto  Zedillo told Mexican-American politicians in Dallas in 1995..[Mexico Woos U.S. Mexicans, Proposing Dual Nationality, by Sam Dillon, NYT, December 10, 1995]
All these acts, whether by omission or commission, violate Catholic teaching.
As for the duties of illegals who are here, apropos of the Catechism and the teaching Pope John Paul II, they are obliged to obey the law—which just might mean surrendering to authorities and returning home.
Catholic teaching does not entitle them to stay forever as illegals. Catholic teaching mandates obedience to the law.
Most American Catholics, regardless of what they think of immigration, are unaware of these fine distinctions because of the way the U.S. bishops and their leftist allies systematically misrepresent Catholic teaching on immigration. (A notable exception, to my mind, is Catholic apologist  blogger Jimmy Akin)
Which brings us back to Christ.
WWJD? He would tell the alien: Render unto Caesar. Obey the law. Go back home and work in your own country. If you wish to come here, get in line with everyone else.
And, if Americans decide that they don’t need even legal immigration, respect that decision too.

Editorial: Will the NFL be a Debate Topic?

Editorial

As we know, the NFL's viewing ratings have dropped substantially due to their players insulting the viewing audience. If it was a "freedom of conscience" issue, then those who support the police, such as when the Dallas Cowboys wanted to put a tribute sticker on their helmets, would also be allowed. This bias shows what the real issue in sports is.

Contrast this with what happened to Steve Clevenger in MLB. His pro-police comments caused him to be suspended indefinitely and that was also due to "freedom of conscience" on his part.

Therefore, the real issue is towing the politically correct line in sports. Contact the presidential candidates and the debate moderators and ask for their take on all this!

Editorial: Boycott the NFL!!!

Editorial

As we've seen recently, athletes who make multi-millions in the U.S. are now dishonoring the flag of the nation that is letting them get that money!

These athletes have an income that is dependent upon the fans who the athletes now despise. These athletes chose 9/11, a day of mourning for Americans, to pile on and mock the same Americans upon whom their livelihood depends.

Therefore, we should BOYCOTT the NFL!!! This includes viewing, buying merchandise, and participating in fantasy football and other betting pools!

Besides, then we can pay attention to things that really matter, such as why our nation's immigration laws are ignored! ;)

So, is marijuana a harmless drug or a gateway to all kinds of trouble?

"Come on, it's cool! Everybody's using it. Don't be so uptight." Maybe you have heard others ask, "What's the big deal?" So, is marijuana a harmless drug or a gateway to all kinds of trouble? Here are a few facts about marijuana to help you think vertically:
• U.S. government statistics put marijuana use at 23.9 percent of 10th graders. For high school seniors, it is 32.4 percent (National Institute on Drug Abuse 2008 survey, nida.nih.gov). While these numbers are high, it's hardly "everybody."
• Although the primary agent in marijuana is THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), more than 400 other chemicals are present in marijuana smoke. Many are the same harmful compounds found in cigarette smoke.
• While there are no complete statistics about marijuana's contribution to traffic accidents, the effects of marijuana are well-known: severely diminished alertness, concentration, coordination and reaction time. In this respect, driving under the influence of marijuana is similar to driving under the influence of alcohol.
• A very high number of hard drug users started with marijuana. While not every user of marijuana goes on to harder drugs, many do.
• In the United States, there were more than 750,000 arrests for marijuana possession in 2007, the latest year for which statistics are available (fbi.gov).
Although the Bible doesn't directly address marijuana, it does address its effects. Proverbs:23:21 says, "For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and drowsiness will clothe a man with rags." And 1 Corinthians:6:9-10 adds, "Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards , nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God."
Marijuana use, as with other illegal drug use, has effects similar to alcohol abuse. Reject the instant drunkenness of marijuana. VT

Alcohol, Tobacco, and Marijuana: Mankind's Big Problems

Printer-friendly version

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) reports that approximately 17 million Americans are afflicted with alcoholism or a related disorder, and that only 15% of this group ever receives treatment. Alcohol-related deaths are the United States’ third highest preventable cause of death, with tobacco as the leading factor.
The CDC estimated almost 20% of U.S. adults smoked cigarettes in 2011. The Foundation for a Drug-Free World similarly records that over 94 million Americans have used marijuana at least once, making it the most common illicit drug in the nation today.
When such prevalent and serious obstacles present themselves, it is important for Christians to turn to God’s Word for answers and guidance.

God’s Created Benefits

Interestingly, these three, common, addictive substances are derived from plants that are part of God’s creation which He gave mankind control over from the Garden of Eden forward (Genesis:1:11-12, Genesis:1:29-31). God states that He saw that these plants were “good,” not unhealthy, evil, or even addictive. Why? The answer is that they have been perverted both by Satan and our own human nature to many sinful uses. Just because God called them good doesn’t mean that everything we do with them is good.
Alcohol can be made from many plants, each with their own group of uses, but what about tobacco and marijuana plants? They too have an interesting set of benefits. Tobacco has many gardening applications, especially as an insect repellant. Tobacco also has value in its homeopathic and medicinal use, including relieving skin inflammation, improving dental hygiene, and caring for insect bites. Marijuana has industrial potential as a fiber, including being used as a textile, paper pulp, plastic composite, thermal insulation, reinforcement for cement, fiberboard, and animal bedding. The plant can further be used for its oilseed in a plethora of products from shampoo to bread and yogurt to dietary supplements. These functions help show us how God’s creation can benefit us even when it seems impossible.

Satan’s Sinful Perversions

Intoxication, getting drunk or high, is something that is denounced by God, however. Galatians:5:19-21 lists “drunkenness” negatively as a sinful “work of the flesh,” thus something for Christians to avoid. The book of Proverbs contains several admonitions with regard to substance abuse, specifically alcohol. In Proverbs:23:29-35, such abuse is compared to a “serpent” and a “viper,” and further, that it will cause our heart to “utter perverse things.”
As a result, it becomes clear that seeking to get drunk or high is sin. This is because it can cause us to “forget the Law” (Proverbs:31:4-5). What law? God’s Law! When under the influence, we lose our judgment, make poor choices, and do things we would ordinarily never do. We also experience a lack of control of our body. Christians are responsible for their actions as budding members of God’s Family, and our ability to think clearly is compromised when we are intoxicated.
Finally, utilizing these substances to push our bodies to the limit is unhealthy, and can permanently damage our bodies, which are God’s Temple for the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians:3:16-17). God wants us to take care of our bodies, and an addiction would only separate us from Him as a form of idolatry.

Alcohol in the Bible

As a final point, alcoholic beverages are sometimes attacked for their harmful qualities, but are also spoken of positively in the Bible. In the command to attain our hearts’ desires at the Feast of Tabernacles, we are told we can spend our money on “wine or similar drink” (Deuteronomy:14:26). Jesus Christ’s first recorded public miracle was to change water into wine for a wedding celebration (John:2:1-10), and He instituted wine as a Passover symbol for His blood throughout all generations of His Church (Matthew:26:27-29).
Moderation and wisdom are required when employing God’s creation. Always look to what God has to say on a matter, especially on a subject as vital to your life as this. If you or someone you know struggles with alcoholism or other addictions, please consider reading our free booklet: Overcoming Alcoholism: There Is Hope! Nothing should ever be used to intoxicate us, lest it come between us and our loving Father.

[Darris McNeely] Canada is reeling right now as a result of two terrorist attacks that have taken the life of at least one policeman and unsettled what is normally a very peaceful and calm country and nation. And as a result of their participation in the war against ISIS in the country of Iraq in the Middle East, now terrorism has come to Canada, and they're wondering what's next. To deal with something like this in a country like Canada – certainly America's had its share, and other western nations – is unsettling and disturbing. It creates fear and it creates panic – which is exactly what terrorists want to have accomplished in western nations when they perpetrate random acts, such as what happened in Canada this week when a gunman stormed the parliament building and was finally shot down by the sergeant in arms there, and another officer was killed when he was run over by a car.
These are tragic situations. Bigger ones have happened, killing more people in other countries, and there's lessons as we look at what is taking place here. I look at this always from a standpoint of not just the political, geopolitics of the moment, but also from a spiritual perspective. Because if you look at terrorism as striking fear and panic within otherwise normal and peaceful western nations, especially like Canada, and creating mistrust of even other parts of the population, and all the media hype that goes along with it, you realize that the terrorists' goal is to break down the fabric of society and to rip it apart by whatever means they can do. And when they succeed in that to, again, whatever degree, their ends begin to be met. And so there's a lesson there. There's a lesson for you and I spiritually as we view and observe all of this.
We deal with a spiritual form of terror when it comes to the resistance against us as Christians in dealing with this world, overcoming our own human nature, overcoming the pulls of this world and living godly in this age. We have that responsibility before us. And our enemy is seeking to snatch away the calm, the confidence, the courage that we might have to deal with the challenges that we have. So we deal with our own form of spiritual terrorism. And I think that is something that we always need to remember as we look at these larger incidents that take place in the news today.
In Luke:8:12, there is the parable of the sower and the seed, and Christ's explanation of the seed being the gospel of the kingdom that is sown within people's lives and minds. He shows that one of the primary activities that takes place after that seed is sown is the effort to snatch away the seeds of truth, the seeds of the gospel of the kingdom, and commitment and dedication from a person's life. It says that what happens is, "The devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts that they should not believe and be saved." That's Luke:8:12. Satan comes on the scene to snatch away the seed of hope, of truth, of courage, and to replace it with fear and panic, spiritually speaking, in this age. We fight a war on a spiritual level against a spiritual terrorist every single day. And I think that's one of the great lessons that we must have. We have to stand up, and we have to be courageous, and we have to deal with that, just as the political leaders have to be courageous and show how their own peoples, as in Canada – how to go forward, how to deal with tragic accidents and acts of terror that take place like this. They have to show that in order for the people, the country, the nation to continue going forward. We have to do the same in our own personal life as we meet the resistance that is there with us.

New York hatchet jihadi called for “internal mass revolt” in U.S.

New York hatchet jihadi called for “internal mass revolt” in U.S.

Hatchetman2This Fox report irresponsibly does not specify what kind of revolution Thompson had in mind. It doesn’t mention that he was a Muslim who wrote: “If you’re looking for ‘perfect’ Muslims who never make any mistakes in their Jihad, then you will be looking in vain! If the Zionists and the Crusaders had never invaded and colonized the Islamic lands after WW1, then there would be no need for Jihad! Which is better, to sit around and do nothing, or to Jihad fisabeelallah!”
“Terror connection not ruled out in ax attack, police say,” FoxNews.com, October 24, 2014 (thanks to Victor):
A terroristic motive is not being ruled out in Thursday’s hatchet attack on New York City police officers.
The New York City police shot and killed a man identified as 32-year-old Zale Thompson in multiple media reports, who attacked officers with a hatchet in the middle of the day in the Queens section of the city.
Videotape and witness accounts appeared to show Thompson purposely targeting four rookie New York Police Department officers, police said. The man was seen minutes before the attack pulling a hatchet from his backpack and began swinging toward the officers, police said.
A possible terror connection to the ax attack has not been dismissed, police said, as the suspect’s alleged Facebook posts could be a cause for concern.
“This early on, we really cannot say yes or no to that question,” Police Commissioner William Bratton said.
Police directed possible signs of a terrorist attack to the alleged posts that he wrote calling for a revolution on American soil.
“America’s military is strong abroad, but they have never faced an internal mass revolt,” the suspect allegedly posted on the social media site.
“They are weaker at home. We are scattered and decentralized, we can use this as an advantage. They are centralized and strong, which can be exploited as a weakness. Think of a swarm of bees (negroes) that surround and attack an elephant (America) to death.”
The suspect also calls for guerilla warfare.
“Helicopters, big military will be useless on their own soil” another post read. “They will not be able to defeat our people if we use guerilla warfare. Attack their weak flanks… If you get wounded who cares. If you die who cares. Eventually they will surrender and then the war will be over.”…

Four Lakewood Police Officers Killed: How Did This Happen?

Printer-friendly version
Posted December 2, 2009

As a society, we must learn how to better deal with evil.

This past Sunday morning, in a small coffee shop barely 20 miles from my home, four police officers were murdered as they sat doing paperwork. The crime took place in Parkland, a small suburb between the city of Tacoma and Fort Lewis. The officers killed were from Lakewood, an adjacent suburb. This is small-town America next door to the big city. To describe the impact of such a horrific crime in this area is difficult. People have been seen crying as they shopped or stood on the streets. I noticed that no one wanted to talk much in the home improvement store I went to. Memorials have sprung up in several places. The largest is at the Lakewood Police Department building where thousands of flowers, cards and candles fill the sidewalk. The entire area is stunned and in shock. Four dedicated servants of the community are dead, leaving spouses and nine children who have lost a parent. As I write this, news has just come over the radio that the suspect in the murders has been shot and killed by a Seattle police officer. People are relieved that no one else has been injured and the massive manhunt is over. The authorities are in the process now of arresting as many as 10 people who helped the suspect evade authorities over the past three days, including the driver of the getaway car. People are asking, "How did this happen?" The alleged murderer, Maurice Clemmons, had a long history of violence and arrests. He was released early from prison at least twice in another state and later not prosecuted due to paperwork errors. He was arrested here in May for hitting a police officer in the face and for the rape of a 12-year-old girl. According to court records, as he was being booked into the Pierce County Jail he told workers, "I'll kill all you [expletive]." But once again he was released, this time after posting bail. When asked why a probable child rapist with a long criminal record was released, deputy prosecutor Grant Blinn responded, "A typical child rape-2 defendant is summonsed into court, not even arrested. A lot of them are released on their own personal recognizance." I have a difficult time comprehending why child rapists are turned loose so easily. Six days after being released this time, Clemmons reportedly told acquaintances to watch the TV news because he planned to "shoot police." Something is clearly wrong with our system. On a fundamental level our society has lost much of the understanding of evil. The ideas of the humanist movement that permeate so much of our education, entertainment and legal systems have many people convinced of "the good in everyone" and the concept that "all people are the same." They reject the teachings of the Bible, which clearly show that some people choose to be wicked and evil. God's Word also teaches that these people are influenced by an evil being that is referred to as "the prince of the power of the air" and "the god of this age" (Ephesians:2:2; 2 Corinthians:4:4). Modern research is gradually demonstrating that God was right to begin with. In his monumental book Without Conscience, Dr. Robert Hare, who has studied the criminal mind for more than 30 years, writes clearly about psychopaths in our society. In the introduction to his book he states, "It is a personality that is characterized by egocentricity, grandiosity, impulsivity, recklessness, contentment with self, and, most disturbing, a total lack of conscience." As a society, we must learn how to better deal with evil. Messages of sympathy and condolence are coming to this area from all over the United States as word of the horrific crime of this week has been reported. We are praying for the victims' families and others who are suffering. We wish there were something more that could be done. It is likely that the Tacoma area will never be quite the same as it was.

VT
