Richard Sherman And The Soft Bigotry Of (Sportswriters’) Expectations
For those of you who do not follow football, Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman made a game-saving interception in the NFC championship game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. But shortly afterwards, ESPN reporter Erin Anderson interviewed Sherman and he responded like a professional wrestler:
Andrews: Richard, let me ask you about the final play; take me through it.
Sherman: Well I’m the best corner in the game! When you try me with a sorry receiver like [San Francisco 49ers’ Michael Crabtree] that’s the result you gonna get! Don’t you ever talk about me!
Andrews: Who was talking about you?
Sherman: Crabtree. Don’t you ever open your mouth about the best! Or I’m gonna shut it for you real quick! L.O.B!
Sherman also made a choking gesture towards Crabtree.
Suffice to say, this is not exactly great sportsmanship. Many NFL fans did not like Sherman’s boorish behavior, and, as it’s the Age of the Internet, some posted Politically Incorrect language about it.
Significantly, almost all the ensuing Main Stream Media commentary about the Sherman incident, both positive and negative, focused on how smart Sherman is and how racist his detractors are.
In a Forbes Magazine article that went viral, 22 Brief Thoughts About That Richard Sherman Interview, January 19, 2014 Thought # 4 was
Sherman graduated second in his class in high school and also graduated from Stanford. So not only is he not a fool, odds are he’s smarter than you and me.
(In case you are wondering, Thought # 3 was “Sherman is black, and so of course there was an undercurrent of race to some—OK, a lot—of the discussion.”
Writing in the Washington Post’s black-oriented website The Root, Stephen Crockett wrote:
If being a thug means being salutatorian of your high school with a 4.2 GPA and 1,400 SAT scores, graduating from Stanford, delivering on your promise of greatness and showing no ability to humble-brag—then the black community could use more thugs like Richard Sherman.[ Seahawks’ Richard Sherman Is Not a Thug. Stop Calling Him One, January 21, 2014]
All in all, Crockett used the some variant of “intelligent” or “smart” 17 times in his article.
Seth Stevenson, one of the few MSM writers to come out against Sherman’s rant, still had to qualify: “The fact that Sherman is very smart and attended Stanford and approaches his job in a scholarly manner doesn’t mean he wasn’t being a dick.”
And of course Stevenson also qualified that “the despicable, racist language being lobbed at Sherman needs to be shouted down, aggressively.”
The most over-the-top ode to Sherman’s intelligence: Tim Buffoe’s The Scary Smart Of Richard Sherman. [CBS, January 21, 2014] After making sure to note that much of the backlash was “racially motivated,” Buffoe said that Sherman was “is a very smart person… [whose] intelligence frightens people.” Buffoe went on and on, using some variant of “smart” or “intelligent” 17 times.
Even Rush Limbaugh opined that Sherman “is really smart, well spoken, well educated…He went to Stanford, went to class, graduated, is extremely well spoken, well written…”] Richard Sherman is a Smart Guy, January 20, 2014]
When Sherman issued a sort-of apology, he made sure to let everyone know that when he’s screaming on the football field, “then it's not going to come out as articulate, as smart” as he normally is. He then spent most of the interview chastising his “racist” opponents, claiming that "It's like everybody would say the N-word, now they say, 'thug.'” Richard Sherman: Rant was 'immature,' reaction 'mind-boggling, By Lateef Mungin and Steve Almasy, CNN, January 23, 2014,
So according to both conservatives and liberals, graduating second in your class in high school, attending Stanford as a star football player, and having a 1400 on the SATs is evidence of genius. For non-Gen Y or childless VDARE.com readers, the SAT added a writing section, so the top score is now 2400, not 1600. Sherman actually scored 990 in 2006, on the old style of test. The Root apparently applied the conversion without explaining it.
Curiously, although I often hear liberals bring up “affirmative action for athletes” (along with legacies) to counter criticism of racial preference, the people saying how smart Sherman is are forgetting he presumably Sherman got into Stanford due to his football skills, to say nothing of his race, rather than his intelligence. Even black students could not get into Stanford with a Sherman’s SAT scores.
Sherman’s 1400/990 on the SATs is below the average test taker score, normed at 1000 in 2006. And it is nearly 3 standard deviations below the average Stanford SAT of 2215, new style.
What about graduating second in his class in high school? Sherman attended Dominguez High School in Compton, which is 13% black, 83% Hispanic, 1% Asian, and 0.1% white. A grand total of 6.3 % of students are proficient in Math and 27.5% are proficient in English. Being valedictorian or salutatorian in these circumstances may mean painfully little.
Elite schools like Stanford do not take average students. According to CollegeConfidential.com,  in 2005, Stanford accepted less than 1% of students who had below a 500 on Reading and just 1% had below a 500 on Math. (I could not find the statistics for the combined score for 2005, and the next year the SATs changed their scoring system. However, it is a fair assumption that the students who managed to get in with below a 500 math score likely did much better on verbal, and vice versa. Thus even with affirmative action, there's no way Stanford would have accepted Sherman, but for his football abilities.)
However, the NFL has all incoming players take the Wonderlic test, which is a very accurate proxy for IQ. Sherman scored a 24, which is equivalent to a 108 IQ. That’s a standard deviation and a half higher than your average black, and smarter than your average white American.
But it’s lower than the average for the predominantly white positions of center, quarterback, and lineman. It’s far below Peyton Manning’s 28 (116 IQ), Tom Brady’s 33 (126 IQ), or Eli Manning’s 38.5 (137 IQ).
More importantly, it’s below the 115 IQ that, just a few decades ago, was viewed as necessary to attend college—much less an elite university like Stanford.
So Richard Sherman is no doofus. But he’s not as exceptional as he’s made out to be.
What does this matter?
The lady doth protest too much, methinks. No one bothers to call Eli Manning smart, because they know it’s not an anomaly that a white quarterback is intelligent. Yet some dreadlocked black cornerback has a slightly above-average intelligence, and every sportswriter bends over backwards to call him a genius.
To quote George W. Bush: this is “the soft bigotry of low expectations.”

...You Might Be an Alcoholic

Jeff Foxworthy has a routine that goes, "If your porch falls down and kills four of your five dogs, you might be a redneck."



I have a similar scenario to pose to you. If you answer "yes" to any of the following questions, you might be an alcoholic.



Do you find yourself drawn to TV shows or novels where the main character has a major drinking problem?

Do you find it necessary to have a drink every evening just to unwind?

Do you often have a drink of something alcoholic before going out to a party to be sure you are fortified enough to have a good time?

Do you avoid parties or social gatherings where you know alcohol will not be served?

Do you need an alcoholic drink to feel comfortable on the dance floor?

Do you always have alcohol in the house even if you don't drink every day?

Are you more comfortable with people who drink alcohol socially than those who do not?

Do you ever drink alcohol in the morning?

Do you frequent restaurants where alcohol is served rather than restaurants where drinks are nonalcoholic?

Have you ever made a mark on the label of a bottle of alcohol and told yourself you will drink only to that mark and no more?

Scary, eh? I remember in my drinking days, I used to be drawn to tests like this and think how stupid the questions were. So what if alcohol was a part of my life. It was a part of the lives of everyone I knew. Did I need a different group of friends? No. People who did not drink were boring stick-in-the-muds, maybe religious fanatics. Watch any old black and white movie and see how all the cool characters live life with a cigarette in one hand and a martini in the other. Well, maybe the cigarette ought to go.



Alcohol in America and Europe has become almost patriotic. In Europe, it is hard to get a cup of coffee after five. Beer and wine flow like water, but beg your waitress for a cup of coffee with your evening meal and she will say, "Pardon?" and be sure her English hasn't run amuck. Been there. Done that. I finally settled for "fruit-soft." That they understand and will bring you a glass of whatever it is the kids are drinking.



Alcoholism is a progressive disease. You may be concerned you might have a little obsession with alcohol now, but trust me, if you do, it will only grow into a huge obsession. Alcoholism is not a stagnant entity. It does not reverse itself. It does not exist in a vacuum. It moves forward, day by day, week by week, year by year, decade by decade until it has you totally encompassed in its victory. Then it does a lively "River Dance" on your unconscious psyche.



Now we all know people who can drink like fishes, who party hardy every Saturday night and not miss a beat, have six-packs of booze in their fridges for weeks on end and only have a wine cooler every other Thursday. The rest of the time, they live on Mountain Dew and cold tea. Good for them, though drinking to excess is never a good thing. Don't let them influence you into thinking you can "drink like a fish and party hardy" today and tomorrow pop the top on a Diet Coke. Maybe you can. Maybe you can't. It's the "can't" possibility that can ruin your life. Is it worth the gamble? I say, no, it's not. Don't spin that wheel. Life's game of roulette may not be your forte.



When you're at a party, and you're drinking alcohol, can you have two drinks and stop? If so, great! You are probably not sliding down that slippery slope that leads to death or insanity, which are the two choices at the end of unconquered alcoholism. But if you need just one more drink to feel right, drinker beware!



No one ever buys a six-pack of Coke and drinks the whole thing in one sitting. So why do people buy a six-pack of beer or wine coolers (four-pack of them—see? I do know of what I speak), and drink the whole thing in an evening? The answer is simple. Beer and wine coolers contain the little hairy demons that get into your blood stream and crawl up and down your veins and scream for more of them to join the party. And the next drink calms the little critters down, until that buzz wears off, and then they holler for more booze. It's a vicious cycle.



The Bible says no drunkard or gluttonous person will enter God's Kingdom. That's what drove me to Alcoholics' Anonymous on Aug. 1, 1976. Gluttony is difficult to resolve as we all have to eat, something, sometime, so we can't quit food cold turkey. But to control drunkenness should be easy. We don't have to drink. I have a button that says, "It's okay not to drink," and I've had the nerve to wear it to cocktail parties. I carry my can of soda in my purse in the event there is NOTHING there that is nonalcoholic to drink, and believe me, I've been to several of those type of events. So you have to be serious about your attack on this problem, and always be prepared with the armor to make your attack succeed. With me, I had to succeed. There was no issue like marriage, or job, or friendship in the balance. It was more serious than that. There was my salvation, being there when the roll is called at Christ's return that was at stake. Failure was not an option.



I learned that "one day at a time" is a workable axiom. Christ said, "Sufficient for the day is its own trouble" (Matthew 6:34). He must have known we'd mess up and need help getting out of the addiction trap, and that plan of action would help us.



We can't beat an enemy we can't see. Many alcoholics I have known in my life just don't see it. They like feeling good. Who doesn't? They say, "How can something that makes me feel this good be bad for me?" Well, my friend, that's why they call it addiction. It's a "feel good" drug, not unlike cocaine, oxycodone and heroin, except that it's legal.



The confusing element is that once you begin to ingest cocaine, oxycodone or heroin, you are hooked. Not everyone who drinks alcohol is hooked, and therein lies the rub, to quote our good buddy, Will Shakespeare. So alcohol appears less threatening than the addictive controlled substances, and in some cases, it is. But in some cases it is not.



I am 100 percent Irish, and there is a rumor out there that Irish people should never drink alcohol. I think there might be a lot of truth in that belief. I was in trouble with alcohol from day one, and it took eight years for me to become a full blown alcoholic. I was baptized in the Church at the time. Things like that should NOT happen to converted, baptized, seriously religious church people who think they are with the program and living a good life as they march down the path to God's Kingdom. But bad things do happen to seriously converted church people because we are physical, and we are subject to physical shortcomings. Being Irish and introducing alcohol into my bloodstream appears to have been a disastrous shortcoming, big time. Once it became so obvious, it had to be addressed. It could no longer be evaluated, thought about and ultimately ignored. I was a "closet drinker" so many of my friends did not know about me. Thankfully, there were also some of my friends who did know about me, and disapproved of me. Vain as I am, I can't have that.



I thank God every day of my life that He gave me the power to hunt down this villainous culprit within me and beat it into a coma. I know it isn't dead. It's in a coma waiting for the next drink to revitalize it. Then it can rear itself into its sword-wielding monstrous power, take over my life and lead me down the path to self-destruction once again. No way. If only for today, God has helped me to keep it comatose. Comatose is good, one sleeping moment at a time.

Weekend Box Office: Playing for Keeps, Burn, The House I Live In

Weekend Box Office: Playing for Keeps, Burn, The House I Live In

Nothing spectacular in what’s new at movie theaters this weekend:



* “Playing for Keeps“: This dopey, predictable, cheesy movie starring Gerard Butler and Jessica Biel was the same flat, attempted slapstick comedy you’ve seen a million times before. And despite it’s PG-13 rating, it’s filled with S-words, women in lingerie and sexual situations. The people who do the ratings are asleep on the job and have been for years.




Butler stars as a former soccer star who is now down in the dumps and struggling financially. He doesn’t have a job and is living in someone’s carriage house, the rent of which he’s yet to pay. But he makes some effort at being in the life of his young son by ex-wife Biel. One day, he finds himself recruited to be his son’s new soccer coach. There he has all kinds of parents tugging at him for one thing or another. Dennis Quaid plays a wealthy businessman who wants his daughter to sing the National Anthem before games and his son to play more. He lavishes Butler money and a Ferrari to borrow. His wife, played by Uma Thurman, as well as two other soccer moms–an annoying Judy Greer and a creepy Catherine Zeta-Jones–try to sleep with him (and the latter two succeed at that). But, soon, Butler learns that his ex–with whom he’s still in love–is getting remarried. And, finally, he begins to grow up, just as he’s also on his way to a job with ESPN.



This wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be and could have been a lot worse. But it’s bad enough. The jokes in this are gross, flat, and stupid. And not funny. And there’s nothing new here. If there is anything redeeming, it’s the relationship between the father and his son, when the father begins to grow up and eventually does the right things. But that wasn’t enough to redeem this disaster which seems like a movie best reserved for the movie pet cemeteries of January and August, not the holiday big movie month of December.



I recently read a Wall Street Journal article about Butler’s role in this movie, which asked, “Can an actor come back from playing a dad?” The question they should have asked: “Can an actor come back from playing crappy roles in crappier movies?” Judging on Butler’s career of dud after dud, the answer seems to be a resounding, “NO.”



HALF A MARX



* “Burn“: This documentary about Detroit firemen (I refuse to use the politically correct “firefighters”–there ain’t a single woman in this, either, and she couldn’t do the job, a point that is strangely missing from this flick) has actor Denis Leary connected to it as an executive producer. One the one hand, it is interesting in terms of what firemen go through on a regular basis. For example, it’s quite obvious–but something I never thought of, that firemen regularly get struck with bath tubs that fall through the floors of burning buildings. That’s rough. Also rough is getting hit by falling bricks, as one fireman does, and he loses most mobility in his lower extremities, sentenced to a wheelchair for most of the rest of his life.



That and other sacrifices the firemen make are well portrayed in this film. All of them must take a second job to pay the rent, and in the particular unit that is the focus of this film, many do roofing and construction jobs. And they expose themselves to danger that is unique to Detroit, which has about 80,000 abandoned homes and countless abandoned buildings. These structures are in such bad repair that the firemen are in danger whenever they answer the call to put out one of the many fires there.



Detroit has about 13 fires a night during the summer, according to this movie, and more fires set per night than even New York City, which has ten times Detroit’s population. And, yet, Detroit doesn’t have the money to provide proper equipment and working gear for the firemen. Because of that, sometimes people die, such as a young girl in a burning home who could have been saved, if only they’d had a truck with a working hose. They didn’t have one.



And while this movie makes those points and others familiar to those of us who live near the city and see these stories on the nightly local news regularly, it is a little repetitive. At only 82 minutes, it seems longer and could have been tightened up a bit. (Perhaps it is because I live near the city and am already familiar with some of the stories and tragedies.) But it is a good portrait of how the bankrupt financial condition and conduct of Detroit not only harms its residents, but costs lives unnecessarily.



ONE-AND-A-HALF REAGANS


* “The House I Live In“: This is your typical, far-left rant against the drug war. Although there are some interesting points to be made, those were drowned by the absurd, including the far-left director and narrator of this movie Eugene Jarecki’s claim that the drug war is the Holocaust and saying “never again” (the emblematic cry of Holocaust survivors) somehow translates to ending the drug war. Huh? The claim that the drug war is “the Second Holocaust” is repeated by “The Wire” creator David Simon. Puh-leeze. I fail to see how people voluntarily doing and pushing illegal drugs is the same as my relatives being forcibly sent to death camps, gassed and cooked in the ovens, and turned into lampshades because they were Jewish. They’re not even in the same universe, nor apparently are the commentators in this movie. And if that weren’t enough, the Holocaust comparison comes in a third time, when we’re introduced to a far-left Lincoln historian with Amish facial hair, whose father, we are told, was one of the investigators and prosecutors of the Nazis at Nuremburg. And this is relevant because . . . ? Oh, yeah, I forgot, the drug war is the “Second Holocaust.” Shaking my head.



Another absurdity in this movie was the usual, predictable claim that the drug war is an attempt by White Americans in power to commit genocide against Blacks. That’s the thesis of this movie, the poster of which bears the tagline, “The war on drugs has never been about drugs.” It’s about all us evil Whiteys wanting to keep a brother down. Yeah, tell it to all the Whites now in prison for cooking meth, a primarily White enterprise. I don’t see the “Whites in power” rushing to make meth cooking and pushing legal. The movie does point out that more White working-class Americans are now in prison for such activity, and seems to go racist on itself by implying that this is the reason we should all rush home and end law enforcement of laws against illegal drugs. Oh, and by the way, our current President–now elected to a second term–is a Black man who headed “The Choom Gang” and also reportedly dealt (and definitely did) cocaine. If we really wanted to “get him,” why was he just elected to a second term? Just sayin’.



You hear the same old stuff here about how much the drug war costs America, about how drugs should be legalized and managed, how most of the prison population are drug users and pushers. Nothing new here. Sure there are a few very sad stories, such as a man who is doing life in prison for 3 ounces of drugs in his possession. He quickly tells us that this is because of a three strikes law, and says he was convicted of two other crimes that were “minor.” Would have helped if we were told what those “minor” crimes were. Instead, we are told how his sister died on her way to visiting him and that his mother spent everything she had to get him out, and she’s still trying. I felt for him and his family, and–assuming his prior crimes really were minor–we shouldn’t be paying to incarcerate this man for life. But movies like this show you the worst luck cases. And for all of those, there are also many that are open and shut cases–career criminals, pushing drugs, involved in murders and organized crime in the drug enterprise and so on.



Those of us who live in the real world know that legalizing drugs won’t end any problems, and will just create more. There will always be a black market for drugs and crime associated with it, legal or not. We will only see a rise in addiction with the ease of availability and lack of penalties. Mending it, not ending it, is the only solution. Drug kingpins and their pushers should never live and breathe easily. And they won’t just close up shop and go out of business if we legalize drugs or lessen penalties for marijuana. It’s simply a slippery slope if we do that.



Whether or not you support the drug war–and some faux-conservatives like Michelle Fraudkin want legalized drug-pushing to your kids (not hers), anyone watching this knows the movie isn’t a documentary. It’s pure advocacy of the worst kind, invoking the Holocaust three times to get us to oppose the drug wars. Sorry, I ain’t buyin’.

Through the principles found in the Bible, we can know what He thinks about this modern issue.



Question: What's wrong with using street drugs like marijuana?



Answer: God wants everyone to have a good physical life (John 10:10The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.



See All...; 3 John 2) and then, through acceptance of His way of life, receive eternal life (John 3:16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.



See All...). The connection human beings make with God is through our minds—the organ that allows us to determine and complete our actions.



Recognizing how vitally important one's mind is, Proverbs 4:23Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.



See All... says, "Keep your heart [mind] with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life." The problem with illegal drugs is that they destroy or impede our ability to think soundly. When we don't have a sound mind, it becomes much more difficult to have a relationship with our Creator.



Another problem with drugs is that they damage our health (www.news.com.au  ). The Bible teaches us that because our bodies are to be the temples (places of residence) for God's Spirit, we need to take care of them. Doing so glorifies—shows respect to—God who made us (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 [19] What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

[20] For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

Q: It seems everyone around me is using drugs. What's wrong with just trying it once to see what it's like?



A: Many people have gotten hooked on drugs after deciding that they just wanted to try them once. So to chance this at all is utterly dangerous. Some drugs are physically addictive, affecting some people even more strongly than others. In addition, people get hooked on the high—the euphoric feeling they have while under the influence of the drug. It feels so good that they want to do it again and again and will do just about anything—including illegal and immoral behavior—just to get another "fix" so they can again enjoy the effects of the drug. A wise person will not take the chance of getting hooked, which amounts to idolatry—putting other things before God and his laws.



Sadly the character issue is often overlooked. But it is absolutely vital. God wants people to develop righteous character in this life in preparation for the next one. Righteous character is developed by determining right from wrong, choosing to do what is right and then following through with the proper action. It is a matter of character to choose not to do what is illegal, disrespectful of God and potentially damaging to our health and spiritual well-being.



Q: What's the difference between using alcohol in moderation and drugs?



A: God permits the use of alcohol in moderation and within legal limits (see Romans 13:1Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

Drunkenness is a sin that can keep a person out of God's Kingdom (1 Corinthians 6:9-10 [9] Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

[10] Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

Studies have shown that the moderate use of alcohol can actually be good for your health (www.hsph.harvard.edu ).



Drugs are a different story. Because their use causes intoxication (similar to drunkenness) and is detrimental to one's health, their use is inappropriate for people who want to honor God.



Q. Since peer pressure is a major cause of youth trying illegal drugs, how can one resist this influence ?
