Ask Colorado State Commission on Higher Education, State Legislators to Overturn Metro College's Tuition Break for Illegal Aliens

A very interesting post from www.NumbersUSA.com about Colorado's state imposing in-state tuition without the legislator's approval. This follows this post about illegal immigrants attempting to vote. This follows this post about Marco Rubio's DREAM Act. This follows this post about the Black Caucus hurting Black Americans with their immigration stand. This follows this post about how to Report Illegal Immigrants! Ask State Commission on Higher Education, State Legislators to Overturn Metro College's Tuition Break for Illegal Aliens

On June 7th the Board of Trustees of the Metropolitan State College of Denver approved a proposal that cuts the cost of college for illegal-alien students by more than half. Students who have a diploma from a Colorado high school or a GED and can prove they have been a resident of the state for three years are now eligible for the rate, which would be $3,358.30 per semester for a full-time student, compared with $7,992.60, the out-of-state rate. In-state tuition is $2,896.20 per semester.

The Metro Board didnt care that the state legislature had repeatedly turned down subsidized tuition for illegal aliens. "We don't need to wait for the legislature," said Metro State board member Terrance Carroll, who voted in favor of the new tuition rate.

If pressured, it is possible for the Colorado Commission on Higher Education or the legislature to overturn the Boards intransigent actions. Please contact Commission officials and key state legislators to tell them to overturn the tuition break.

Contacting the Commission on Higher Education

Please call and email the below-noted Commissioners using the message:

Please overturn the tuition break for illegal immigrants established by the Metropolitan State College of Denver. The policy violates Commission policies and the policies of the college itself.

The colleges intransigent actions sidestepped the legislative process and disregarded the will of the legislature. Allowing their policy to stand will endanger future funding for that institution and others that disregard established policies.

Rebellion is something we expect from college kids but not college boards. A Board of Trustees is no place for insubordinate ideologues. Please direct Metro State Colleges Board to rescind its policy.

Additional Talking Points

Under Commission guidelines, neither Colorado "residency" nor Colorado "domicile," by themselves, entitles one to the lower tuition rates so the Colleges policy violates Commission guidelines.

According to Metro Colleges Trustees manual, the Board has the responsibility to set tuition and fees in accordance with the policies established by the Commission and state law. The subsidized tuition policy is inconsistent with Commission policies and state law, so the Board is in violation of its own policy.

Even if illegal-immigrant students get a college degree, they are still unlawfully present and cannot legally obtain employment. Therefore, the policy would recklessly spend public funding and foreclose the graduation potential of citizens and legal residents who are turned away.

Contacting State Legislators

Please contact Rep. Cheri Gerou, the Chair of the Joint Budget Committee, and the other legislators noted who serve on the Colorado Dept. of Higher Educations Legislative Advisory Committee. Focus on those highlighted in red first and use the message:

Please tell the Commission on Higher Education to overturn the tuition break for illegal immigrants established by the Metropolitan State College of Denver. The colleges intransigent actions sidestepped the legislative process and disregarded the will of the legislature. Metro College should be financially penalized if it does not rescind its policy.

Rebellion is something we expect from college kids but not college boards. A Board of Trustees is no place for insubordinate ideologues. Please work to overturn Metro State Colleges wrongheaded policy.
