Update -- 1 bad amendment pulled -- voting starts again

An interesting post from http://www.numbersusa.com/ about the latest on the Immigration Bills before the House of Representatives.  This follows this previous post about Immigration Bills before the House of Representatives and this post which shows that there are 30,000 openly illegal immigrants in the border town of El Paso. On a related note, you can read about Miss Kentucky Latina here, an interesting article about Jessica Alba here or another article about Salma Hayek here. For more that you can do to get involved click HERE and you can read a very interesting book HERE!

Update -- 1 bad amendment pulled -- voting starts again

1st VICTORY IN HOUSE

A BAD AMENDMENT WITHDRAWN

YOUR PHONE CALLS STILL NEEDED ON OTHER 3 AMENDMENTS BEFORE 7 P.M. EST WEDNESDAY

Our NumbersUSA Hill Team assures me that Rep. Price (D-N.C.) will NOT introduce his Amendment No. 277 to ban funding for REAL ID. His amendment would have slowed down the process of states creating secure drivers licenses that would make it more difficult for illegal aliens to obtain jobs and benefits.

NumbersUSA members have been calling their Representatives all day urging a NO vote on Price's amendment.

You never know at what point opposition is strong enough to cause somebody to feel like it just isn't worth pursuing. We appreciate all that you did to help create the conditions.

If you haven't made your phone call yet, please click here for your Phone Action Note with phone number, talking points and background info.

VOTING IN HOUSE STARTS AGAIN AFTER 6 P.M. WEDNESDAY

Representatives are debating various amendments on the House floor right now. We are told voting will begin on more amendments after 6 p.m.

We do not know whether the 3 remaining immigration amendments will come up tonight or be held until Thursday.

In the meantime, please keep calling until House switchboards shut down (perhaps around 7 p.m. EST).

Here is a good way to refer to the amendments quickly and to be sure they aren't confused with other amendments:

On Amendment No. 225 by Rep. Goodlatte to suspend the Visa Lottery, please vote YES.

On Amendment No. 199 by Rep. Poe to stop the federal government from suing Arizona over its immigration laws, please vote YES.

On Amendment No. 188 by Rep. Polis to cap the number of detention beds for illegal aliens, please vote NO.

If you have never phoned Congress before, here are the easy steps I outlined in my Alert this morning. Otherwise, please go to your Phone Action Note now.

FOLLOW THESE STEPS:

STEP 1 -- Go to your customized Phone Action Note with the info about your own Representative.

STEP 2 -- Read the Talking Point in the middle of the page that we suggest you use on the phone. If you want more info, read the text in the left-hand box.

STEP 3 -- See if somebody else in your District has left a tip about your Congressman. This tip is on the lower right part of the page.

STEP 4 -- Call the phone number on the page.

STEP 5 -- Tell the staffer your name and your city or county name (so they will know you are a constituent).

Say you are calling about amendments on the Continuing Resolution.

Then, give your talking point or points.

You can be as quick as you like. You won't have to debate the staffer. Just leave your information and thank the staffer.

Always be polite. Staffers will treat your requests with much more respect if you are.

STEP 6 -- On the Phone Action Note, click on the red bar at top -- YES, I MADE THE CALL.

That will take you to a page where you can leave information that you think may be helpful to the next person who calls your Representative.

KEEP CALLING FOR ANOTHER TWO OR THREE HOURS. THANKS.

Update on phoning on House immigration votes today‏

DEAR FRIENDS,

HERE'S AN UPDATE ON THE VOTING ON 4 IMMIGRATION AMENDMENTS TODAY

No word yet when the first of the immigration amendments will come up for a vote. So, your phone calls are still needed -- and very helpful.

Thanks to all of you who already have phoned your U.S. Representative. Our Hill Team is getting great feedback from congressional staffers that of the scores of amendments on H.R. 1, the four on immigration are generating the most calls. Hmmm, wonder why that would be!!!

If you haven't made your phone call yet, please click here for your Phone Action Note with phone number, talking points and background info.

CONFUSION BY STAFFERS ABOUT THE AMENDMENT NUMBERS

Our Helpdesk has gotten a lot of inquiries from many of you about whether the amendment numbers we are giving you are correct. Many staffers are suggesting they aren't correct.

Jonathan Osborn of our Hill Team (and a former congressional staffer) says our information is indeed accurate but that a lot of the staffers are new and experienced and confused by the numbering systems on the Hill.

To make sure that your message gets through, we have slightly modified the Phone Action Note's Talking Points.

277 by Rep. Price of North Carolina to ban funding for REAL ID, please vote NO.

An interesting post from http://www.numbersusa.com/ about Immigration Bills before the House of Representatives! This follows this previous post about House bills to add to the Continuing Resolution. Phone now -- House voting today on big immigration issues‏

DEAR FRIENDS,

Please phone your U.S. Reprentative now. Voting on key immigration amendments will start as early as noon.

Click here for your Phone Action Note with phone number, talking points and background info.

Staffers have arrived in their offices at the U.S. House of Representatives and are ready for your calls.

2 AMENDMENTS WOULD FURTHER GUT ENFORCEMENT

1 AMENDMENT WOULD GET THE FEDS OFF ARIZONA'S BACK (a good one)

AND 1 AMENDMENT WOULD SUSPEND THE VISA LOTTERY!!!!!

These are real votes on a big spending bill, and they will be happening fast -- although some votes may not be until this evening or even Thursday morning. Right now, it is just important that you phone as soon as you see this email.

I will be emailing you updates through the day. You can also keep up with the action by looking at our home page regularly at: http://www.numbersusa.com/.

The first of you to call will probably find that staffers don't even know these immigration amendments are being considered today. They were just approved for votes last night.

So, it is extremely important that you call your U.S. Representative to tell him/her that constituents know about the amendments and will be watching closely to see how he/she votes.

If you have never phoned Congress before, please do it this morning. We make it exceptionally easy.

PLEASE GO TO YOUR PHONE ACTION NOTE NOW. THANKS!!

News Flash -- House votes Wed on killing Visa Lottery & more -- take action‏

An interesting post from http://www.numbersusa.com/ about House bills to add to the Continuing Resolution. News Flash -- House votes Wed on killing Visa Lottery & more -- take action‏

DEAR FRIENDS,

Our Team on Capitol Hill has just learned that major immigration amendments are expected to come up for votes on the House floor tomorrow (Wed).

Your U.S. Representative needs a call from you Wed morning to make sure these votes go the right way!

This is the first time in years that Representatives will be forced to take several open stands on these issues.

I am coming to you now just to warn you that we need all of you to be ready to act tomorrow morning.

ACTION -- We need you to check your inbox first thing Wednesday morning and look for my next Alert to you.

It will have the link to a Phone Action Note on your customized NumbersUSA Action Board. There you will find the phone number for your Representative and talking points, as well as background information.

If you have never called Congress, please make this your first time. It is easy. You just talk to a House staffer and calmly state your request. You don't have to argue or debate. Quick in, quick out.

A CHANCE FOR A MORATORIUM ON THE VISA LOTTERY . . .

. . . AND ON THE FEDS SUING ARIZONA!

We're told the Rules Committee has approved these amendments to come up for a vote in consideration of the Continuing Resolution to keep the government funded the next several months:

Amendment No. 225 by Rep. Goodlatte (R-Va.) would ban the State Department from using funds to carry out the Visa Lottery.

This would effectively put a moratorium on the lottery for the next year. Unemployed Americans would no longer be insulted by their federal government raffling off 50,000 permanent work permits to citizens of other countries.

Amendment No. 199 by Rep. Poe (R-Texas) would ban the Justice Department from using funds to sue Arizona to stop it from enforcing immigration laws.

2 BAD AMENDMENTS TO CURTAIL ENFORCEMENT AGAINST ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION

The new more open process of allowing a lot of amendments from all parties presents us with a couple of amendments that could really hurt immigration enforcement.

Amendment No. 277 by Rep. Price (D-N.C.) would ban funding for REAL ID. This would slow down the move nationwide for secure drivers licenses that are kept out of the hands of illegal aliens.

Price has used his seniority for years to slow down and stop deportations of illegal aliens and to make life easier for illegal aliens. This amendment would make it easier for illegal aliens to get state drivers licenses and to use them to remain in the U.S. illegally.

Amendment No. 188 by Rep. Polis (D-Colo.) would cap the number of beds for illegal aliens in detention. This would limit the number of arrests, detentions and deportations of illegal aliens.

Of the 4, I consider No. 225 on the lottery to be far and away the most important. It would be a chance for the first time to reduce the importation of foreign workers during this Jobs Depression in the U.S.

We'll give you instructions on how to register opinion and constituent pressure any -- or all four -- of these amendments.

CHECK BACK ON YOUR ACTION BOARD OR MY NEW EMAIL ALERT FIRST THING WEDNESDAY MORNING
