Additional Talking Points

A recent poll said that sixty-nine percent of Texans want a ban on sanctuary cities and 70 percent think police should be involved in checking the immigration status of those they believe are in the country illegally.

Another police officer was just killed by an illegal-alien drunk driver. Sanctuary policies must end! These policies are not needed to protect witnesses and crime victims who are illegal aliens because they are protected under the federal “U” visa.

The patchwork array of sanctuary cities around Texas is leaving dangerous criminal illegal immigrants on our streets. Their underground society, with street sales of fake identity documents, creates a nurturing environment for terrorists as well. This makes Texans, and the entire country, more vulnerable.

The case against sanctuary policies is very straightforward. There are two laws that Congress passed in 1996 that expressly forbid sanctuary policies. Those statutes say in plain English that a city may not have a policy that prohibits its officers from communicating with the federal government about a person’s immigration status.

When public assistance agencies are prevented from inquiring about an applicant's immigration status, public benefits are distributed to ineligible illegal aliens. This displaces benefits meant for needy Texans! Taxpayers should not foot the bill for covering illegal aliens.
