AMNESTY

One key to defeating Amnesty again is to call it what it is. You will notice these lawmakers and biased newspapers calling it "immigration reform" or an "immigrant bill". We need every citizens activist, talk radio show host, loyal American writer, candidate, and elected official on our side to take part of what our opposition is saying and place the word AMNESTY next to it.
Examples: "Immigration Reform Amnesty", "Guest Worker Amnesty", "Comprehensive Immigration Reform Amnesty", etc...

It is essential to our success that everyone pulls together and adds the word AMNESTY to the propoganda language being used by the treason lobby.

KEEP THOSE DC PHONE LINES HOT TODAY!

CALL AS MANY LAWMAKERS AS YOU CAN!

The Amnesty supporters are holding a massive phone conference today and we will update you on their strategy plans.

ALIPAC is leading the way to do our best to get your voice into the press coverage.

Please review these materials to increase your understanding of this bill, the press bias we face, and our main talking points.

Obamacare? Here are 5 things you can do to stop it!!

A very timely post from http://www.hughhewitt.com/ on stopping Obamacare. You can get the referenced book by clicking here and more interesting articles like this by subscribing to this post here.

Obamacare is indeed in a showdown week, and here are the five things you can do to make sure the Senate leaves for its Christmas break without having moved us one step closer to a disaster for American medicine.
If you are just checking in after a weekend of tree decoration and shopping, here's
What I need as well are e-mails anonymous lobbyists and association executives, especially those connected with the Obamacare fiasco. How many heads are going to roll in the D.C. offices of Big Pharma and the hospital/AMA worlds when the reality of Obamacare sinks in? Have the fingers begun to point yet? It should never have come this far, but many of the Beltway "professionals" talked their members into believing that the president was an unstoppable force with whom a separate peace was needed. And once on that road, the "professionals" didn't even get a decent deal, like some sort of tort reform.
The lure of accommodation in the Capitol is always strong, but hopefully the professionals and the GOP have learned the only way to win is to fight every step of the way. ReverseTheVote.org is the first effort made by the NRCC or the NRSC to use a specific policy debate to drive political fundraising, and if Obamacare gets out of the Senate, ReverseTheVote.org should be the focus for public support against passage. The first thing to do, though, is to register your own opposition with your own senators and congressman, which the "Take Further Action" button in the "Free Our Health Care" box to your right will quickly assist you in doing.
But if you are a well placed source, send me a note at hugh@hughhewitt.com. As Bear in the Woods and Banker Guy can attest, I will keep your identity safe --I do have to know that you are who you say you are-- and will publish responsible posts without edits. The worlds of advertising and banking are just as remote as those of lobbying, and inquiring minds want to know: What were you thinking?

Christmas Reconsidered

An interesting research article from http://www.gnmagazine.org/ about Christmas. If you want to order a free book about this topic click here and for more interesting stories like this click here to follow this blog.

Christmas Reconsidered
By Mario Seiglie
Does the Bible permit a believer to observe religious festivals that are not established by God? Does He allow us to use forms of worship that originated in pagan ceremonies, adapting them to worship Him? Is the New Testament more flexible than the Old, allowing us to disregard God's prior instructions on how to worship Him? More to the point, can we justify the observance of Christmas by Christians?
Let's examine this subject and review what the Bible and history say regarding Christmas observance and its customs.
When the apostle Paul addressed the issue of how flexible Christians should be in their fellowship, he stated: "Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: 'I will dwell in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they shall be My people.' Therefore 'Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you'" (2 Corinthians 6:14-17).
No new days of worship
Regarding pagan beliefs and customs, the New Testament is as emphatic in rejecting them as the Old. There is not a single example in the New Testament of a new religious feast day being established in Christ's honor. Following Jesus Christ's death and resurrection, the New Testament was written over a period of 60 to 70 years-yet nowhere in that written record is there evidence of or instructions for institution of new days of worship in His honor.
Instead, the New Testament records that Christians continued to keep the Old Testament Holy Days listed in Leviticus 23 without interruption, but with greater spiritual understanding than before. The Encyclopaedia Britannica states: "The sanctity of special times was an idea absent from the minds of the first Christians . . . [who] continued to observe the Jewish Festivals though in a new spirit, as commemorations of events which those festivals had foreshadowed" (Vol. 8, p. 828, 11th edition).
It was natural for the early Christians to continue keeping the biblical Holy Days, which now centered on celebrating Christ's successive interventions on behalf of mankind in the past, present and in future.
The Bible gives clear instructions regarding the use of pagan practices to worship the true God.
God was clear when He told His people: "Take heed to yourself that you are not ensnared to follow them...and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, 'How did these nations serve their gods? I also will do likewise.' You shall not worship the LORD your God in that way; for every abomination to the LORD which He hates they have done to their gods; for they burn even their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods. Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it" (Deuteronomy 12:30-32).
The New Testament Church clearly understood this, and there is no hint during that time of new days of worship being established. It was well into the second century before new man-made feasts to honor Jesus Christ began to appear in Rome.
The first was the Easter Sunday celebration, which history records was kept in Rome about A.D. 135. Christmas appears to have first been observed around A.D. 230 and became definitely established on Dec. 25 by the year A.D. 435. Meanwhile, the biblical Holy Days commanded in the Old Testament and continued in apostolic times were systematically abandoned.
History of Christmas
If Christmas was not observed in the time of the apostles, how did it come to be observed? The pre-Christian origins of Christmas can be found in almost any book about the day. The briefest research will show that its roots extend into many different religions and pagan beliefs.
"Saturnalia and the kalends were the celebrations most familiar to early Christians, December 17-24 and January 1-3, but the tradition of celebrating December 25 as Christ's birthday came to the Romans from Persia. Mithra, the Persian God of light and sacred contracts, was born out of a rock on December 25. Rome was famous for its flirtations with strange gods and cults, and in the third century the emperor Aurelian established the festival of Dies Invicti Solis, the Day of the Invincible Sun, on December 25.
"Mithra was an embodiment of the sun, so this period of its rebirth was a major day in Mithraism, which had become Rome's latest official religion with the patronage of Aurelian. It is believed that the emperor Constantine adhered to Mithraism up to the time of his conversion to Christianity. He was probably instrumental in seeing that the major feast of his old religion was carried over to his new faith" (Gerard and Patricia Del Re, The Christmas Almanac, p. 17).
"As ancient as civilization itself is the custom of celebrating a festival at the time of the winter solstice, at the turning of the year, when days begin to lengthen and the sun to return. In Egypt January 6 was honored as the birthday of Osiris; in Rome December 25 was the birthday of Mithra and the feast of Sol Invictus, the unconquered sun. Both dates became identified with Christ's appearance on earth.
"In the East January 6, which had also been a pagan water festival, was fixed as the date of his baptism and marked by the blessing of baptismal waters. In the West it commemorated the adoration of the Magi, the three wise men who came to worship Christ as representatives of the people of the world. Almost everywhere December 25 came to be accepted as the day of the Nativity. The joyous celebrations of the pagan mid-winter festivals were continued by Christians" (Roland H. Bainton, The Horizon History of Christianity, p. 368).
Additional beliefs merged
As Christianity spread throughout the Roman Empire, additional beliefs were merged into it, resulting in the mixture of customs observed today. "There are indications...that as Christians went on from year to year and century to century developing the rites of Christmas, they borrowed, adopted, or simply carried over elements of other midwinter celebrations" (Gerard and Patricia Del Re, The Christmas Almanac, p. 15).
Many pagan customs were imported directly into the church with little or no change. "Certainly the official Church inspired its missionaries to make the winter feast a Christian festival. In 601, Pope Gregory instructed Augustine of Canterbury to follow the custom of decking temples with greenery by decking churches in the same manner, and to solemnise the time by Christian feasting.
"'Nor let them now sacrifice animals to the Devil, but to the praise of God kill animals for their own eating, and render thanks to the Giver of all for their abundance...For from obdurate minds it is impossible to cut off everything at once...'" Pope Gregory said (William Sansom, A Book of Christmas, p. 30).
Does man have the authority of the Bible to innovate and adopt other days of worship? Notice what Jesus Christ told His apostles when He gave them the great commission: "'All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age'" (Matthew 28:18-20).
Christ never even hinted that His followers would have the authority to establish new days of worship. He told the apostles to teach His followers "to observe all things" He had commanded them. Throughout His earthly ministry He had diligently kept God's Sabbath and Holy Days, which now were filled with new meaning. The early Church continued in their observance, following Christ's own example.
The New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology states: "In the early Christian church the propriety of celebrating the festivals together with the whole of the Jewish people was never questioned, so that it needed no special mention" (Vol. 1, p. 628).
Does the new covenant render all prior biblical forms of worship obsolete, giving Christians freedom to express their faith and gratitude in any way they wish? How much freedom do Christians have to innovate in their worship? They are given only as much freedom as was authorized in the New Testament.
Added traditions rejected
For instance, notice the Pharisees' approach to the Scriptures. They argued with Christ that they could innovate and add to God's laws new traditions, reasoning that they could better express their faith by doing so. They asked Christ, "Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?" (Mark 7:5).
How did Christ answer? Did He explain that their practices were perfectly acceptable since He came so they could add even more traditions? He certainly did not!
Here is His answer: "'...In vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.' For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men...All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition" (Mark 7:7-9).
Just as the Pharisees added their traditions to the law of God, so do many churches today. But Christ's answer directly condemns this practice.
What happens when God's feasts are no longer considered holy and their observance is viewed as optional? A vacuum results. Since the biblical feasts are the only ones authorized in Scripture, historically mankind has had to innovate. Religious leaders have looked to popular religious festivals outside the Bible that can be "Christianized," such as the pre-Christian festivals and celebrations that came to be renamed Christmas.
Unlike the biblical Feasts, which picture the steps in God's plan that offer salvation to all mankind, Christmas is a shallow man-made substitute.
Christ did not consider His birth of prime importance. Instead He instructed His followers to observe the Passover, commemorating the sacrifice of His life for the sins of the world. After instituting new symbols representing the importance of His life and sacrifice for us, He told the disciples "Do this in remembrance of Me" (Luke 22:19; 1 Corinthians 11:24).
The whole concept of celebrating Christ's birth would have been foreign to His disciples and the writers of the New Testament. "To the early Christians the idea of celebrating the birthday of a religious figure would have seemed at best peculiar, at worst blasphemous. Being born into this world was nothing to celebrate. What mattered was leaving this world and entering the next in a condition pleasing to God...
"No, if you wanted to search the New Testament world for peoples who attached significance to birthdays, your search would quickly narrow to pagans. The Romans celebrated the birthdays of the Caesars, and most non-Christian Mediterranean religions attached importance to the natal feasts of a pantheon of supernatural figures" (Tom Flynn, The Trouble With Christmas, p. 42)
Origin of biblical festivals
Some go so far in advocating new forms of worship as to propose that the biblical feast days commanded by God in Leviticus 23 are ultimately derived from pagan celebrations. Certainly there is no biblical basis for such a claim. Such opinions are based in liberal theology. Conservative scholars on the whole discard such theories.
Reflecting the conservative point of view, The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia states: "The sacred seasons of Israel stem directly from divine revelation and were designed to illustrate significant aspects of the eternal redemption that God had already ordained for His own under the OT. The Hebrew calendar of convocations is therefore not to be explained on the basis of natural phenomena, such as the phases of the moon or the Palestinian agricultural cycle.
"Neither may it be attributed to pre-Mosaic custom, whether Canaanite or nomadic. Israel's feasts served rather as divinely revealed expressions of the moral obligations of His people, as memorials of God's saving acts in the past, as sacraments of His sanctifying power in the present, and as types of His anticipated victory over sin in the forthcoming first and second advents of Jesus Christ" (Vol. 2, pp. 292, 293).
In fact, according to the biblical history of Genesis 1-11, it was not God's way that came out of paganism, but paganism that came out of God's way, when man left His guidance and laws. Mankind then established corrupted systems with only glimpses of God's truths. Dr. Stephen Langdon, one of the great archaeologists and Assyriologists of this century, said: "In my opinion, the history of man's most ancient religion reveals a rapid tendency from pure monotheism to extreme polytheism and its focus on evil spirits. In its most absolute sense, it is the account of the fall of Man" (Sir Charles Marston, The Bible Spoke the Truth, p. 72).
Other feasts added
Some believe that since the Jews added the feasts of Hanukkah and Purim in biblical times, we are free today to add religious holidays and celebrations of our own choosing. Does their observance sanction the institution of additional religious holidays?
There is a major difference in background and intent. Nowhere did Hanukkah and Purim incorporate pagan forms of worship into a celebration honoring the true God. Hanukkah celebrates the rededication of the Jerusalem Temple after its defilement by the Syrian king Antiochus, and Purim commemorates the defeat of the Jews' enemies in the time of Queen Esther. As such, they are celebrations of thanks and honor to God, similar to Thanksgiving Day as observed in the U.S.
Christmas, however, is very different. It is a syncretism of numerous pagan beliefs and customs into a celebration supposedly honoring the Son of God, a practice soundly condemned in the Bible (Deuteronomy 4:2, 12:1-4, 30-32; 2 Corinthians 6:14-17).
"...Though it celebrates the mightiest event in the history of Christendom, it was overlaid upon heathen festivals, and many of its observances are only adaptations of pagan to Christian ceremonial. This was no mere accident. It was a necessary measure at a time when the new religion was forcing itself upon a deeply superstitious people. In order to reconcile fresh converts to the new faith, and to make the breaking of old ties as painless as possible, these relics of paganism were retained under modified forms, in the same way that antique columns, transferred from pagan temples, became parts of the new churches built by Christians in honor of their God and his saints" (The Story of Santa Klaus, p. 58, 59).
Regarding the background of Christmas, Tom Flynn wrote: "In my research, I found only one Christmas custom that seems to belong exclusively to Christianity. Christians appear to have invented the Midnight Mass out of whole cloth. Celebrated in Rome as early as the fifth century, it alone appears not to have significant pagan antecedents" (The Trouble With Christmas, p. 70).
Worship in spirit and truth
Since Christmas is not authorized by God nor by the Bible, it can never be holy. Jesus Christ Himself said that "true worshippers...must worship in spirit and truth" (John 4:23, 24). Christmas celebration is not sanctioned by the Scriptures. Such idolatrous practices are at best futile, foolish and worthless (Jeremiah 10:1-8).
At worst, since such practices break the First and Second Commandments, they are sin. When God said: "You shall have no other gods before Me" (Exodus 20:3), He condemns forms of worship that celebrated the supposed birth the sun or false gods. When God states: "You shall not make for yourself an idol...You shall not bow down to them or worship them..." (Exodus 20:4, New International Version), He also condemns inventing religious feasts and celebrations to replace those God ordained.
Why not just keep the Holy Days that come directly from God and picture His plan to offer salvation to humankind?
Paul's warnings to Timothy about what would happen in the church should also be a warning to us: "I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables." (2 Timothy 4:1-4).
Christmas is one of those fables. GN

Why the Swiss Anti-Minaret Vote is Important: Muslim Edifice Complex on Viagra, Size Matters

A very interesting post from http://www.debbieschlussel.com/ about a recent ban on minarets in Switzerland! For more interesting stories like this click here to follow this blog.

Why the Swiss Anti-Minaret Vote is Important: Muslim Edifice Complex on Viagra, Size Matters
By Debbie Schlussel
In 2006, I noted that Swiss–normally uber-socialists–voted to make it much tougher for aliens to get into the country and get asylum, and also voted for reforms making it tougher for aliens to get government assistance and benefits. With a growing Muslim illegal alien population, I thought: finally, these chocolate-, watch- and secret-bank-account-producing Nazi-enablers get it.

Size Matters:
USA’s Largest Mosque’s Minarets Are Telling You, “Mine is Bigger Than Yours”

And over the weekend, they “got it” again, voting to ban minarets, the towers that come on many mosques, from Switzerland. I’m all for it. This isn’t about zoning or airspace or Muslim eyesores piercing the sky. It’s far more important than that.
To understand why it was important for the Swiss to do what we in America simply don’t have the guts to, you must understand what the minarets symbolize and why they are there. It’s epitomized in the phrase “allahu akbar.” The phrase does not mean–as has been repeatedly reported–that allah is great. It means “allah is the greatest” or “allah is the greater,” as in greater than the Christian and Jewish G-ds and that of any other religion.
And the minarets on mosques are the architectural version of that. They establish Muslim supremacy. Minarets make a mosque higher than any building surrounding it, higher than any church, higher than any synagogue, higher than any Buddhist temple. And that’s the point of the minaret. There is no other function other than the loud announcement of Islamic supremacy that consciously betray the smarmy Muslim pretense of “co-existence” BS and “interfaith” blah-blah-blah. Muslims have this thing for towers. Remember how they took down two of ours in New York? They chose those for the same reason they use minarets to establish their dominance. Size matters. And these faux modesty-obsessed Muslims are actually really more obsessed with sexual and phallic symbols than any other organized modern religion.
With today’s technology employed by Muslims, they can no longer use the excuse that they need tall towers to spread their Muslim call to prayer at 5:00 a.m. in the morning. Not that science would support better audio for sounds uttered a higher altitudes. It doesn’t. There’s a reason there are Islamic crescents atop every minaret, and it’s the same reason for the minaret in the first place: to establish Islam’s tower over all else that surrounds it.
The minarets are sky pollution, plain and simple. Muslims want you to know that unlike other buildings, their house of worship is on perpetual viagra, higher in the sky than anything. It’s the ultimate Edifice Complex.
Take Dearbornistan, for instance.
When Dearbornistan’s Islamic Center of America–the largest mosque in North America and a hotbed of Hezbollah in America–was built, it was built far taller, especially with its twin minarets, than any of the churches on either side of it, and even the senior citizens’ high rise apartment building in the vicinity. This was done deliberately–to establish Islamic supremacy. It’s a statement: “We are taller than all of you, we are higher up spiritually and in every other way.” Iran and Shi’ite backers financed the place in order to make it so. There’s a reason it dominates the landscape of Dearbornistan’s Ford Road. The Muslims have conquered Henry Ford’s vision of Dearbornistan, their minarets towering higher than any smokestacks from the dying Ford factories.
And that’s what the minarets are about on the mosques in Switzerland and the mosques in Toledo, Ohio. It’s an arrogance and a smugness in bricks and stucco. But it’s not just that. It’s a loud architectural scream that Islam has invaded and wants to assert its supremacy all over the land.
The Swiss heard that scream and smacked it down. When. Will. America?
***
BTW, I don’t mean this as any sort of praise for the Swiss. Their neutrality in World War II was a fraud, a fiction, a myth. They helped the Nazis, turned over Jews to them, and refused to provide Jews asylum the way they have done with so many Muslims today (which is why they have the minaret prob in the first place). And the Swiss snatched Jewish bank accounts and helped the Nazis to Jewish money, as well. They are not to be admired or emulated, except on these latest few votes.
On this, at least, they do get it. Sort of. They banned minarets, but what about the extremist Muslims who are now 5% of their population and growing. ? What will they do to stop this population from taking over and asserting its extremism upon them? Looks like not much . . . until it’s too late.
And by the way, while the minaret ban passed with an overwhelming 58% majority voting for it, that means that 42% opposed it. With Muslim birth rates and immigration, that will soon change. So this is really a temporary victory only.
Still, it’s nice to see someone fighting the jihadist invasion of their country . . . while they still can.

Christmas Before Christ? The Surprising Story

An interesting research article from http://www.gnmagazine.org/ about Christmas. If you want to order a free book about this topic click here and for more interesting stories like this click here to follow this blog.

Christmas Before Christ? The Surprising Story
Most people know the Bible doesn't mention—much less sanctify—Christmas. Does it make any difference as long as it's intended to honor God and bring families together?

by Jerold Aust
Several months ago the popular American comedic actor Drew Carey was interviewed on an equally popular television talk show, The View. Mr. Carey surprised the audience when he addressed the value of telling children the truth about Santa Claus.
"I don't think you should tell kids that there is a Santa Claus," he said. "That's the first lie you tell your children." Instead, "tell kids that Santa's a character we made up to celebrate a time of the season." Otherwise "when kids get to be 5 ... they realize their parents have been lying to them their whole life."
Earlier in the year the Arts & Entertainment cable television channel aired a program about Christmas titled Christmas Unwrapped: The History of Christmas. The promo for this program read:
"People all over the world celebrate the birth of Christ on December 25th. But why is the Savior's nativity marked by gift- giving, and was He really born on that day? And just where did the Christmas tree come from?
"Take an enchanting journey through the history of the world's favorite holiday to learn the origins of some of the Western world's most enduring traditions. Trace the emergence of Christmas from pagan festivals like the Roman Saturnalia, which celebrated the winter solstice."
These two programs addressed the fact that Santa Claus is fictitious and that Christmas and its trappings emanate from pagan Roman festivals. By no means are these the only sources of information about the background of Santa Claus and Christmas.
Is there more to these ancient traditions and practices than meets the eye? And, more important, does it make any difference whether we continue them?
Celebration of the sun god
It may sound odd that any religious celebration with Christ's name attached to it could predate Christianity. Yet the holiday we know as Christmas long predates Jesus Christ. Elements of the celebration can be traced to ancient Egypt, Babylon and Rome. This fact doesn't cast aspersions on Jesus; it does, however, call into question the understanding and wisdom of those who, over the millennia, have insisted on perpetuating an ancient pagan festival that has devolved through much of the world as Christmas.
Members of the early Church would have been astonished to think that the customs and practices we associate with Christmas would be incorporated into a celebration of Christ's birth. Not until several centuries had passed would Christ's name be attached to this popular Roman holiday.
As Alexander Hislop explains in his book The Two Babylons: "It is admitted by the most learned and candid writers of all parties that the day of our Lord's birth cannot be determined, and that within the Christian Church no such festival as Christmas was ever heard of till the third century, and that not till the fourth century was far advanced did it gain much observance" (1959, pp. 92-93).
As for how Dec. 25 became the date for Christmas day, virtually any book on the history of Christmas will explain that this day was celebrated in the Roman Empire as the birthday of the sun god. Explaining how Dec. 25 came to be selected as the supposed birthday of Jesus, the book 4000 Years of Christmas says: "For that day was sacred, not only to the pagan Romans but to a religion from Persia which, in those days, was one of Christianity's strongest rivals. This Persian religion was Mithraism, whose followers worshiped the sun, and celebrated its return to strength on that day" (Earl and Alice Count, 1997, p. 37).
Not only was Dec. 25 honored as the birthday of the sun, but a festival had long been observed among the heathen to celebrate the growing amount of daylight after the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. The precursor of Christmas was in fact an idolatrous midwinter festival characterized by excess and debauchery that predated Christianity by many centuries.
Pre-Christian practices incorporated
This ancient festival went by different names in various cultures. In Rome it was called the Saturnalia, in honor of Saturn, the Roman god of agriculture. The observance was adopted by early Roman church leaders and given the name of Christ ("Christ mass," or Christmas) to conciliate the heathen and swell the number of the nominal adherents of Christianity.
The tendency on the part of third-century Catholic leadership was to meet paganism halfway-a practice made clear in a bitter lament by the Carthaginian philosopher Tertullian.
In 230 he wrote of the inconsistency of professing Christians. He contrasted their lax and political practices with the strict fidelity of the pagans to their own beliefs: "By us who are strangers to Sabbaths, and new moons, and festivals [the biblical festivals spelled out in Leviticus 23], once acceptable to God, the Saturnalia, the feasts of January, the Brumalia, and Matronalia, are now frequented; gifts are carried to and fro, new year's day presents are made with din, and sports and banquets are celebrated with uproar; oh, how much more faithful are the heathen to their religion, who take special care to adopt no solemnity from the Christians" (Hislop, p. 93).
Failing to make much headway in converting the pagans, the religious leaders of the Roman church began compromising by dressing the heathen customs in Christian-looking garb. But, rather than converting them to the church's beliefs, the church became largely converted to non-Christian customs in its own religious practices.
Although at first the early Catholic Church censured this celebration, "the festival was far too strongly entrenched in popular favor to be abolished, and the Church finally granted the necessary recognition, believing that if Christmas could not be suppressed, it should be preserved in honor of the Christian God. Once given a Christian basis the festival became fully established in Europe with many of its pagan elements undisturbed" (Man, Myth & Magic: The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Mythology, Religion, and the Unknown, Richard Cavendish, editor, 1983, Vol. 2, p. 480, "Christmas").
Celebration wins out over Scripture
Some resisted such spiritually poisonous compromises. "Upright men strove to stem the tide, but in spite of all their efforts, the apostasy went on, till the Church, with the exception of a small remnant, was submerged under Pagan superstition. That Christmas was originally a Pagan festival is beyond all doubt. The time of the year, and the ceremonies with which it is still celebrated, prove its origin" (Hislop, p. 93).
The aforementioned Tertullian, for one, disassociated himself from the Roman church in an attempt to draw closer to the teachings of the Bible.
He wasn't alone in his disagreement with such trends. "As late as 245 Origen, in his eighth homily on Leviticus, repudiates as sinful the very idea of keeping the birthday of Christ as if he were a king Pharaoh" (The Encyclopaedia Britannica, 11th edition, Vol. 6, p. 293, "Christmas").
Christmas was not made a Roman holiday until 534 (ibid.). It took 300 years for the new name and symbols of Christmas to replace the old names and meaning of the midwinter festival, a pagan celebration that reaches back so many centuries.
No biblical support for Santa Claus
How did Santa Claus enter the picture? Why is this mythical figure so closely aligned with the Christmas holiday? Here, too, many books are available to shed light on the origins of this popular character.
"Santa Claus" is an American corruption of the Dutch form "San Nicolaas," a figure brought to America by the early Dutch colonists (The Encyclopaedia Britannica, 11th edition, Vol. 19, p. 649, "Nicholas, St."). This name, in turn, stems from St. Nicholas, bishop of the city of Myra in southern Asia Minor, a Catholic saint honored by the Greeks and the Latins on Dec. 6.
He was bishop of Myra in the time of the Roman emperor Diocletian, was persecuted, tortured for the Catholic faith and kept in prison until the more tolerant reign of Constantine (ibid.). Various stories claim a link from Christmas to St. Nicholas, all of them having to do with gift-giving on the eve of St. Nicholas, subsequently transferred to Christmas Day (ibid.).
How, we might ask, did a bishop from the sunny Mediterranean coast of Turkey come to be associated with a red-suited man who lives at the north pole and rides in a sleigh pulled by flying reindeer?
Knowing what we have already learned about the ancient pre-Christian origins of Christmas, we shouldn't be surprised to learn that Santa Claus, too, is nothing but a figure recycled from ancient pagan beliefs.
The trappings associated with Santa Claus-his fur-trimmed wardrobe, sleigh and reindeer-reveal his origin from the cold climates of the far North. Some sources trace him to the ancient Northern European gods Woden and Thor, from which the days of the week Wednesday (Woden's day) and Thursday (Thor's day) get their designations (Earl and Alice Count, pp. 56-64). Others trace him even farther back in time to the Roman god Saturn and the Greek god Silenus (William Walsh, The Story of Santa Klaus, pp. 70-71).
Was Jesus born in December?
Most Bible scholars who have written on the subject of Jesus' birth conclude that, based on evidence in the Bible itself, there is no possible way Christ could have been born anywhere near Dec. 25.
Again we turn to Alexander Hislop: "There is not a word in the Scriptures about the precise day of [Jesus'] birth, or the time of the year when He was born. What is recorded there, implies that at what time soever His birth took place, it could not have been on the 25th of December. At the time that the angel announced His birth to the shepherds of Bethlehem, they were feeding their flocks by night in the open fields ... The climate of Palestine ... from December to February, is very piercing, and it was not the custom for the shepherds of Judea to watch their flocks in the open fields later than about the end of October" (Hislop, p. 91, emphasis in original).
He goes on to explain that the autumn rains beginning in September or October in Judea would mean that the events surrounding Christ's birth recorded in the Scriptures could not have taken place later than mid-October, so Jesus' birth likely took place earlier in the fall (Hislop, p. 92).
Further evidence supporting Jesus' birth in the autumn is that the Romans were intelligent enough not to set the time for taxation and travel in the dead of winter, but during more-favorable conditions. Since Joseph's lineage was from Bethlehem, and since he had to travel from Nazareth in Galilee to Bethlehem, and since his expectant wife Mary traveled with him, it would have been nearly impossible for Joseph and Mary to make the trip in the winter. As recorded by Luke, Mary delivered Jesus in Bethlehem during the time of census and taxation-which no rational official would have scheduled for December.
What difference does it make?
The Bible gives us no reason-and certainly no instruction-to support the myths and fables of Christmas and Santa Claus. They are tied to the ways of this world and contrary to the ways of Christ and His holy truth. "Do not learn the way of the Gentiles," God tells us (Jeremiah 10:2).
Professing Christians should examine the background of the Christmas holiday symbols and stop telling their children that Santa Claus and his elves, reindeer and Christmas gift-giving are connected with Jesus Christ. Emphatically they are not! God hates lying. "These six things the LORD hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him: a proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, a false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren" (Proverbs 6:16-19).
Christ reveals that Satan the devil is the father of lies (John 8:44). Parents should tell their children the truth about God and this world's contrary and confusing ways. If we don't, we only perpetuate the notion that it is acceptable for parents to lie to their children.
Can a professing Christian promote a pagan holiday and its symbols as something that God or Christ has approved? Let's see what God thinks about people using customs and practices rooted in false religion to worship Him and His Son. We find His views clearly expressed in both the Old and New Testament.
God specifically commands His people not to do what early church leaders did when they incorporated idolatrous practices and relabeled them Christian. Before they entered the Promised Land, God gave the Israelites a stern warning: "Take heed to yourself that you are not ensnared to follow them [the inhabitants of the land],... and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, 'How did these nations serve their gods? I also will do likewise.'
"You shall not worship the LORD your God in that way; for every abomination to the LORD which He hates they have done to their gods ... Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it" (Deuteronomy 12:30-32, emphasis added throughout).
Many centuries later the apostle Paul traveled to and raised up churches in many gentile cities. To the members of the Church of God in Corinth, a city steeped in idolatry, Paul wrote: "... What fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God ... Therefore 'Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you.' ... Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God" (2 Corinthians 6:14-17; 7:1).
Instead of allowing members to rename and celebrate customs associated with false gods, Paul's instructions were clear: They were to have nothing to do with them. He similarly told Athenians who were steeped in idolatry, "Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent" (Acts 17:30).
God alone has the right to decide the special days on which we should worship Him. Jesus Christ plainly tells us that "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth" (John 4:24). We cannot honor God in truth with false practices adopted from the worship of nonexistent gods.
Jesus said: "This people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men" (Mark 7:6-7). With God no substitutes are acceptable. It makes no difference that Christians mean well when they observe Christmas. God is not amused or pleased.
The knowledge of how to honor Almighty God, who made us, preserves us and gives us eternal life, has been made available to you. Will you honor God or follow the traditions of mankind? GN

Does it matter to God which days and customs we celebrate to honor Him? Why do so many of our holidays have strange customs sanctioned nowhere in the Bible?
Many people are shocked to discover the origins of most popular holidays. They're also surprised to find that the feast days God commands in the Bible-the same days kept by Jesus Christ and the apostles-are almost universally ignored.

He Lies! Obamacare Does Cover Illegal Aliens. (And Legal Immigrants Too, Needless To Say)
By Washington Watcher
Two months ago, Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) spoke truth to power when he yelled “You Lie!” as President Obama asserted "There are also those who claim that our reform efforts would insure illegal immigrants. This, too, is false. The reforms I'm proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally."[Transcript]Wilson was right. Obama was indeed lying.Under legislation which the House may vote on as early as Saturday (November 6), illegal aliens were allowed to participate in the government subsidized health “exchange”. The Democrats intentionally blocked amendments to require any verification to ensure that illegal aliens do not receive the public option. After Wilson exposed Obama and the Democrats' lies, the White House backtracked. Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that Obama would promote a bill where “illegal immigrants would not be allowed to access the exchange that is set up.” He also said that adding verification requirements is "something we'd work out with Congress." [White House stiffens against coverage for illegal immigrants, Associated Press, September 11, 2009]Obama can “work” all he wants, but the Democrats in Congress have apparently chosen simply to ignore his guidelines. In the 1900 pages of the health care bill, they couldn’t (=wouldn’t) add the few sentences that would keep illegal aliens from exploiting taxpayer services.Joe Wilson along with Representatives Dean Heller (R-NV) and Nathan Deal (R-GA) are planning to introduce an amendment to the Rules committee to close this loophole. But the Democrats are planning to block it.According to the Associated Press, “Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.) indicated that the House will have to vote on a bill that allows illegal aliens to use the new health care ‘exchange’ and that does not require verification to keep illegal aliens out of the other parts of the proposed new federal health care system.”Despite Obama’s promises not to cover illegal aliens in the exchange, he will not pressure Congress to follow his own guidelines. The Hispanic Caucus sent their leaders to demand that Obama keep this loophole in the bill, and threatened to vote against it if it were closed. After the meeting, the Associated Press reported,“‘He listened to us. We listened to him,’ said Rep. Nydia Velazquez, D-N.Y., head of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. ‘We made it very clear that 20 votes in the Hispanic caucus depend on the language in the House bill.“Currently, there is no prohibition in the House bill against illegal aliens buying insurance in the exchange, but the White House backs such a ban and one exists in the Senate bill.“‘I think that he got our message,’ Velazquez said.’ [Obama, House Dems press for health care votes, by Erica Werner and Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar, Associated Press, November 5, 2009]What about verification? Virtually all means-tested programs require that applicants be verified through the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements [SAVE] program before getting benefits. But both the Senate and House versions of health care reform only require immigrants to show a driver’s license or social security card to prove legal status. Needless to say, as long experience with only requiring employees to provide easily forged ID cards to prove their legal work status shows, this will not keep illegals from fraudulently acquiring healthcare. Another loophole to give illegal aliens healthcare: anchor babies. Congressional Research Services reported that“There could be instances where some family members would meet the definition of an eligible individual for purposes of the credit, while other family members would not… H.R. 3200 [Note H.R. 3200 is not the version of the Health Care Bill that will be voted on—that’s H.R. 3692—however, the exact same problem exists in both bills.] does not expressly address how such a situation would be treated. Therefore, it appears that the Health Choices Commissioner would be responsible for determining how the credits would be administered in the case of mixed-status families.” [Treatment of Noncitizens in H.R. 3200, by Alison Siskin, Congressional Research Services, August 26, 2009]In other words, if a child of an illegal alien is an anchor baby US Citizen and thus eligible for Obamacare, then the entire family—legal or illegal—is also eligible.Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) summarized all these problems succinctly“First, the bill allows open access to the federally run Health Insurance Exchange, subsidized with two billion dollars of taxpayer funds. Second, the bill contains an unreliable verification mechanism. Applicants for federal insurance subsidies will not even be required to provide identity documents to prove they are who they claim to be. And third, the bill leaves open the possibility that if one citizen family member is eligible for benefits, then the whole family, including illegal immigrant family members, is also eligible for the benefits.”In addition (and an even bigger problem): legal immigrants can suck resources from the American taxpayer. The 1996 Welfare Reform Act sensibly barred legal immigrants from receiving means tested services in their first five years here. But H.R. 3692, explicitly provides an exemption, so that immigrants are immediately eligible for taxpayer-funded healthcare.Polls show that 83% of Americans don’t want illegal aliens to be covered by government insurance. But Obama apparently missed that message—because he is too concerned with the ethnic lobbies within his own party. While the Democrats lie about illegal aliens being covered by Obamacare, they are very upfront about the fact that covering illegals won’t matter anyway if we pass amnesty.Sen. Jeff Bingham (D-NM) said: “We are not trying to expand health care coverage to illegal immigrants through this legislation. That will have to be dealt with through comprehensive immigration reform [a.k.a. amnesty].”The Democrats realize that the immigration battle is tied to the health care battle. And so should immigration patriots. If the immigration issue manages to sink Obama’s top legislative goal, it’s a safe bet that amnesty for illegals will be dead on arrival.
