Texas Republican Primary Runoff Recommendations ‏

An interesting article from www.PeterMorrisonReport.com about the Texas Primary. This follows this post about the Contempt of Congress vote by the House that you can write a letter or send a fax about. This follows this post about the Kansas City shooting.  You can follow me at blogspot here and at twitter here https://twitter.com/brianleesblog. Please consider following both in case one goes down!

Texas Republican Primary Runoff Recommendations

The Texas runoff elections will occur on May 27th, with early
voting taking place from May 19th through May 23rd. There are three
Republican contests that are particularly important. In this
report, I'm going to share my endorsements in these three
races.  First, however, it's important to note that no
candidate is perfect. All three of the men I'm endorsing are
only human, and there are elements in each of their records that
some of us could quibble with. However, none of the three have
anything in their past that could be considered a deal breaker,
while the same cannot be said of some of their opponents.  All
three are excellent candidates who deserve our wholehearted support
in the May 27th runoff.

In the GOP runoff for Lt. Governor, the three-term incumbent, David
Dewhurst, is running against Dan Patrick, the well-known state
Senator from Houston.  Dan Patrick is the clear choice in this
race.  While David Dewhurst is no wild-eyed liberal, in his dozen
years as Lt. Governor he hasn't exactly compiled a track record
that demonstrates a strong commitment to conservative principles.
On the contrary, he has been repeatedly praised by liberal media
outlets for his "moderation" and "bipartisanship", and his
willingness to "reach across party lines." Of course, those are
exactly the same kinds of things the mainstream media said about
John McCain when he was running for the GOP presidential nomination
back in 2008. When mainstream media types talk this way about a
Republican, they're saying that the candidate is their kind of
conservative - one who might talk a good game, but can be counted
on not to put up much of a fight against the liberal agenda.

In contrast, we never hear any liberals praising Dan Patrick for
bipartisanship, moderation, or his willingness to play footsie with
the Democrats.  Instead, they attack him for being too
conservative, not willing to compromise at the drop of a hat, and
generally just being too "far right." He has been
consistently pro-life throughout his career, and he's also a
strong fiscal conservative who can be counted on to lead the fight
to curtail government spending in Austin. He also understands what
a grave threat illegal immigration is to our traditional way of
life in Texas, and has voted accordingly. He opposes in-state
reduced tuition for illegal aliens, and he has been calling for a
crackdown on border security for years, while David Dewhurst has
been missing in action in this area. Dan Patrick is the far better
choice for Lt. Governor.

Another runoff is for the Republican nomination for Agriculture
Commissioner, pitting Tommy Merritt against Sid Miller. Tommy
Merritt is a politician with a history of big spending and working
against conservative causes, while Sid Miller has a better track
record.  Sid Miller authored the law that requires abortionists to
perform a sonogram on the unborn baby at least 24 hours before
performing an abortion, which has no doubt led to countless women
changing their minds and letting their babies live. Liberals
despise this law, and they have never forgiven Sid Miller for
writing and introducing it.  That's one reason there are a lot
of attacks being made against him, even though the office of
Agriculture Commissioner has nothing to do with abortion. Left-
wingers believe that a man who believes strongly in the sanctity of
human life is unfit for any office, period.

Sid Miller's opponent in the runoff, Tommy Merritt, is a
completely different story. A former member of the Texas House,
Merritt was declared the most liberal of all Republican House
members in 2010.  This isn't simply a nickname he was given by
a few conservative groups on the basis of some minor disagreements,
as some of his supporters like to spin it.  On the contrary, Mark
P. Jones, head of the Rice University Political Science department,
made the statement.  He studied the voting records of all House
members in 2010, and in an article published in the Houston
Chronicle he wrote that Tommy Merritt was "the most liberal
Republican" in the House. That pretty well tells us all we
need to know about Tommy Merritt. We need to support Sid Miller for
Ag Commissioner.

In the GOP runoff for Attorney General, Ken Paxton is facing Dan
Branch. This could well be the most important of the three
contests. Greg Abbott, the sitting AG, often says this about his
job description:

"I go to the office, I sue the federal government, and then I
go home."

While he's obviously exaggerating, there's a lot of truth
in his quip, as he has sued the feds over two dozen times while in
office. Burdensome federal regulations and other unconstitutional
violations of states' rights by Washington, D.C. are bad enough
now; in the future, they're likely to become even more numerous
and more intrusive. We're going to need an Attorney General who
will fight for our rights as Texans against the federal regime that
is constantly seeking to trample those rights.

Dan Branch is not the man for the job. Far from being a reliable
conservative, he's one of Joe Straus's cronies. Dan Branch
is also a big spender - in  2007 he earned a D- on the Texans for
Fiscal Responsibility Index. In 2013, they gave him an F. In the
past, NARAL Pro Choice-America, the most rabidly pro-abortion
advocacy group in the country, commended Branch for authoring a
legislative amendment that would have increased the number of
third-trimester abortions in Texas. Naturally, the media loves a
RINO like Dan Branch; the Houston Chronicle recently described him
as "respected", "moderate", and
"pragmatic", and took him to task for trying to falsely
portray himself as a staunch conservative.

Ken Paxton is the man we need in the office of Attorney General.
His record in the Legislature makes it clear he won't back down
from a fight.  While Dan Branch was content to be Joe Straus's
lackey, Ken Paxton actually challenged Straus for the position of
the Speaker of the House.  Make no mistake - it takes a lot of
courage to mount a challenge to an incumbent House Speaker. Ken
Paxton knew he would pay a price for his challenge, but he did it
because of his commitment to conservative principles. That's
exactly the kind of Attorney General Texas needs. Here's what
Senator Ted Cruz said about the candidate:

"Ken Paxton is a tireless conservative warrior. Ken Paxton
stands and fights, whether it's against Obamacare, whether
it's fighting for voter ID, or whether it's fighting to
defend our religious liberty. And I'm proud to say Ken Paxton
is my friend who fights hard in the state of Texas."

Like Sid Miller and Dan Patrick, Ken also has the support of many
conservative advocacy groups across the state. He's the hands
down choice for Attorney General.

Runoffs tend to have low turnouts compared to general elections and
primaries.  Conservatives can't afford to neglect this one, as
the stakes at the ballot box are higher than they've ever been.
I urge everyone to vote for Dan Patrick for Lt. Governor, Sid
Miller for Ag Commissioner, and Ken Paxton for Attorney General.

Remember that politics is often choosing between the lesser of two
evils, especially in runoff elections where you only have two
candidates.  These are my recommendations, but the choice of a
candidate does not entail a blanket endorsement of the individual,
just my view that they are the least worst choice from the two we
have.

Early voting for runoff: May 19th - May 23rd.
Runoff election date: May 27th

Please forward this report on to other conservatives who are likely
to go vote! Also, please like the report on facebook to help spread
the word!

Texas Voters Should Beware Lobby Front Groups

A timely post about from www.empowertexans.com about moderate groups claiming to be conservative in Texas. This follows this post about an attempt to get DEMOCRATS to abandon Obamacare (The Affordable Care Act). This follows this post about endorsements for TEXAS. This follows this post about Texas legislators who are graded "Worse than Wendy." This are GOP legislators!  In the meantime, you can get more involved if you like here and read an interesting book HERE.

Voters Should Beware Lobby Front Groups

As the primary election season pulls into the home stretch, voters are being bombarded with information from a host of campaigns and groups. Unfortunately some of the information they will see this cycle is pure bluster – created to mislead voters into supporting someone who doesn’t share their values when they are in Austin.
Texas Conservative Roundtable
On many moderate Republicans’ mailers, voters will see them tout an award called the “Lone Star Conservative Leader” award. This award is given out by something called the “Texas Conservative Roundtable.” In reality the award is a participation trophy for moderates so that they can claim conservative credentials on their mail pieces when real conservative organizations are unwilling to lend their endorsement. “Texas Conservative Roundtable” gives awards to fully 85 of the 95 Republicans in the Texas House. So who doesn’t get an award? Many of the names missing from the list occupy the highest rankings on the Fiscal Responsibility Index. What’s more, the group actually gave an award to presumptive Democratic Lt. Governor nominee Leticia Van de Putte while withholding one from conservative Donna Campbell.
Curious as to whether “Texas Conservative Roundtable” was a real group or not, we recently visited the address listed on their website. The group claims to be located a block away from the Capitol at 1108 Lavaca St, Suites 110-209, which makes it sound like the organization occupies a whole two floors of downtown office space. Their space, in fact, is a bit smaller than that. It turns out that Suite 110 is the UPS Store. Mail sent to Suite 110-209 ends up in private mail box 209.
Texas Future Business Alliance
Last year, a new front group popped on the scene. Calling themselves the “Texas Future Business Alliance,” a coalition of lobby organizations ranging from the Texas Medical Association, to Texans for Lawsuit Reform, to the Texas Association of Realtors began sending mail into the districts of liberal-to-moderate Republicans proclaiming them to be conservative stalwarts. The mailers were emblazoned with a big “A,” though what that top grade was referencing was anyone’s guess. Texas Future Business Alliance didn’t produce a scorecard. They don’t even have a website.
An exposé by the Dallas Morning News revealed that the group was cobbled together to back moderates over conservatives and to do battle with Empower Texans. The coalition mirrors efforts by the US Chamber of Commerce to do battle with the TEA party.
Keep Texas Working
The newest group to send mail into Republican districts defending moderates and calling them conservatives is called “Keep Texas Working.” Last week, we exposed the group for sending mail into House District 115 that called liberal Republican Bennett Ratliff a conservative. We also noted that the group is led by lobbyist Luke Bellsnyder.
A review of the group’s website showed it claiming a physical address of 809 W 12th Street, Suite E, Austin, TX 78701. Our interests were particularly sparked when a google search of this address turned-up a listing for “Equality Texas,” a left-wing LGBT group. Curious as to the connection, we visited this address as well. The offices behind 809 W 12th Street are fairly run-down, and while a search of the premises revealed doors labeled A–D, there was no office space marked Suite E and a review of the mailboxes at the complex showed that Suite E was skipped. How “Keep Texas Working” and “Equality Texas” are connected, and whether “Keep Texas Working” is any more than paperwork and websites remains a mystery.

Editorial: Will Texas turn Blue NOW?

Editorial

This week begins the primary season in what is the last GOP stronghold of the U.S. How long that will continue is an interesting question as there is a concerted effort to "Turn Texas Blue." If THAT ever happens, the GOP would be finished as you can see by looking at the electoral map with Texas added to California, New York, and other large "Blue States." Do consider this when watching the Texas primaries and general elections!

Texas Primary Review and Runoffs‏

A very interesting post from www.PeterMorrisonReport.com
about elections in Texas. This follows this post about the possiblility of suing the administration over non-enforcement of immigration laws. This follows this post about the Black Caucus hurting Black Americans with their immigration stand. This follows this post about how to Report Illegal Immigrants! For more that you can do to get involved click HERE and you can read this very interesting book HERE.

Summary of this report:

The Texas primary has come and gone, and it brought both good news
and bad news to Texas conservatives. Joe Straus survived a primary
challenge for his own seat, but many of his cronies went down to
defeat. Unfortunately, we lost a few staunch conservatives, and
the new redistricting maps drawn up by Straus and his moderates
played a big part in that. Several races are still undecided, and
are headed for runoffs in July, giving us another opportunity to
elect strong conservative leaders. We also have a challenger for
Speaker of the House.

Full report:

After being delayed by lawsuits, the Texas primary finally took
place on May 29th. Texas conservatives had high hopes that the
passion and energy that were unleashed a few years ago had not
diminished, and that the results of the GOP primary would be a
clear message to the GOP about what kind of candidates we're
looking for. Unfortunately, the results weren't that clear cut,
but were more of a mixed bag. There was some bad news, but there
was a lot of reason for hope, too.

We'll start with the bad news, which is that some very good
people were defeated in their bids for re-election. Three
candidates whose defeats will have the most impact were Gail Lowe,
Leo Berman, and Wayne Christian. Gail Lowe, who fought so
valiantly to make sure that schoolchildren in Texas get a real
education based on the actual facts of history, instead of
left-wing PC fantasies, lost her seat on the Texas State Board of
Education. Leo Berman and Wayne Christian, two of the finest
conservatives in Austin, both lost House re-election bids to GOP
challengers.

Of course, there are many factors that come into play in every
election, but there's no getting around the fact that one of
the biggest factors in some of these losses was the redistricting
plan created by Joe Strauss and his team of RINOs. It's
difficult to avoid the conclusion that one of the purposes of the
new redistricting map was to punish certain strong conservatives.
It seems clear that the RINOs deliberately forced candidates like
Wayne Christian and Gail Lowe into these new, artificial districts
filled with people who don't know them, and whose voting
patterns would make it much more difficult for them to be
re-elected. Here's what Michael Quinn Sullivan said about the
Wayne Christian loss:

"A dark spot on the night was the loss of State Rep. Wayne
Christian. But even there, the Straus team had to radically re-draw
Christian's district and spend heavily from the Austin
lobby."

The good news is that most conservative Republicans won their
primaries and that several Straus supporters went down to defeat,
including three of his closest cronies (Vicki Truitt, Rob Eissler,
and Mike Hamilton). In addition, two more of Straus's pals
(Chuck Hopson and Sid Miller) didn't win their contests; they
only managed to qualify for a runoff election on July 31st. Other
contests resulted in runoffs, too. This means that there are still
several opportunities for conservatives to make a difference when
it comes to deciding who will represent us in November.

In fact, there's no reason conservatives can't be the
deciding factor in every one of the upcoming runoff races.
That's because turnout will probably be very low. According to
official government figures, only 1.4 million registered
Republicans came out to vote in the primary on May 29th.
That's an 11% turnout. Numbers for runoff elections are
usually even lower than that. One political expert is predicting
that between 6% and 8% of GOP voters will come out on July 31st.
Compare that to a general election, when about half of all
registered voters generally come out to vote.

A low turnout is great news for committed conservatives. The lower
the turnout, the more impact each vote has, which means that if we
all take a little time out of our schedules and go to the polling
place on July 31st, while most other voters are too apathetic to
bother, we can dominate the runoff races, elect people who will
stand for our principles, and send another strong message to Joe
Straus and the RINOs in the Republican establishment. We can't
let up now; it's imperative that we keep letting the GOP
establishment know that we expect our elected leaders to fight for
true conservative values, instead of going along to get along. It
might take a while, but if we refuse to give up, eventually
they'll get the message.

On that note, Rep. Bryan Hughes (R-Mineola) has filed paperwork
with the Texas Ethics Commission declaring that he will mount a run
for Speaker of the House, opposing Joe Straus. This is excellent
news. It takes real courage to oppose a sitting Speaker, because
there are consequences when you go up against the man who calls all
the shots. Rep. Hughes has already proven that he's not afraid
to challenge the status quo. He vocally withdrew his support for
Straus in 2010, after he received word that GOP members who
didn't support Straus would be punished by having their
districts redrawn unfavorably. He never wavered even as he endured
a firestorm of criticism after his announcement. Many lesser men
would have apologized or said "my remarks were taken out of
context." Bryan Hughes is a true conservative with a lot of
character, and he deserves our full support in his challenge to
Straus.

Here are the runoff races to be decided on July 31st. I've
marked candidates that I'm endorsing with an asterisk. (I'm
not offering an endorsement in every race.)

Dear Drudge Report,

Please consider immediately adding articles to Drudgereport.com that warn your readers about the impending unconstitutional redistricting in Texas. Passage of the unconstitutional redistricting in Texan would lead to voting rights for millions of illegal aliens who would then displace most of your readers in American politics.

Most of the articles coming out of the major newspapers in America are heavily biased in favor of this radical agenda.

Please locate the many articles online that point out both sides of the debate and the many negative consequences for Americans if the unconstitutional redistricting in Texas occurs and then place them on Drudge Report.
A few months back, the Drudge Report failed to place any significant coverage of this news on the site while the Spanish language media and liberal newspapers inspired their readers to call Congress. Please do not leave conservative Americans and our many American talk radio programs in the dark this time. Judicial Gerrymandering Slowed By Supremes

A very interesting post from http://www.empowertexans.com/   about the new congressional districts in Texas being redrawn so that the new seats favor the Democratic party in a Republican state. This follows this previous post about conservative media to contact about this issue. This follows this previous article about encouraging American energy independence. This is a key issue to prevent money from going to hostile countries such as Iran  and Venezuela. For more that you can do to get involved click HERE and you can read a very interesting book HERE!

Judicial Gerrymandering Slowed By Supremes

Posted  by Michael Quinn Sullivan

Late Friday afternoon the US Supreme Court issued a stay against the legislative and congressional maps drawn by a three-judge federal panel based in San Antonio. This action marks a big win by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott against a new low in judicial activism. It also puts the 2012 primary election calendar in flux.

—Attorney General Greg Abbott

By issuing the stay against maps drawn by the federal judges, the Supreme Court clearly finds Mr. Abbott’s arguments persuasive and deserving of review. Mr. Abbott has argued that the maps were an overreach of the court’s authority. Frankly, and with all due respect to our attorney general, that might be an understatement.

While the state legislatures are charged with drawing the political boundaries of legislative and congressional districts based on census numbers, the 1964 Voting Rights Act placed several states, including Texas, under additional federal review to ensure the protection of minorities from past patterns of discrimination. Courts have, in the years since, made varying changes to correct certain, specific deficiencies in the maps crafted by the legislature.

In a statement Friday evening, Mr. Abbott said he “is committed to protecting the integrity of Texas’ elections by ensuring they are conducted based on legally constructed redistricting maps, and the Supreme Court’s decision today is an important step in that direction.”

When lawmakers met this spring, they took on the task of redrawing lines in keeping with the population. Yet they might as well have adopted a 1987 road map of Texas, for all the three-judge panel cared. The judges touched districts seemingly without regard to common sense, instead creating a map only Democratic partisans could (and did) cheer. Talk about judicial activism!

Mr. Abbott and the legislative leadership – including House Speaker Joe Straus – should be roundly applauded for standing against this federal intrusion by the three-judge panel. Liberal media apologists discounted the possibility of a stay; but the overreach by their friends clearly has prompted the Supreme Court to take a most unusual step.

Remember, the federal judges’ maps all but disenfranchised Texas voters by ignoring their will as expressed through the 2010 general election ballot box. Voters sent an historic conservative super-majority to the state House, which was apparently unimportant to the court’s majority. They ignored voters who tossed out liberal incumbents of various ethnic backgrounds in favor of conservative challengers of various ethnic backgrounds.

As evidenced by the (apparently inconvenient) results of the 2010 election, the voters have Texas have truly been looking past the color of candidates skin and into the content of their philosophical and ideological character. That’s apparently a terrifying prospect for liberals in a conservative state, so they counted on the courts to dictate election results through gerrymandered districts.

Looking ahead, we don’t know what this stay means for the primary election calendar. With the real possibility of new lines, that means some folks currently running won’t be eligible, and those currently not running might suddenly find new life. Incumbents paired by the court might find themselves now without a fellow incumbent against them. Voters whose districts were radically shifted into new territories may find more familiar ground.

Until the Supreme Court has a hearing on the issue in early January, we’ll all be stumbling in the dark.

Some will, no doubt, decry the real possibility of the primary elections for the legislature and US House being delayed. (The 2012 presidential, US Senate, statewide and local primaries could still be held March 6.)

Frankly, it is better for the legislative and congressional primaries to be delayed so we have legal and fair lines, than to have them on time with unfair, improper, judicially gerrymandered lines.

Federal judges shouldn’t be allowed to engineer maps to suit the whims of disgruntled partisans unable to win at the ballot box. Texas voters deserve to have their voices heard, lest we do irreparable damage to our form of government.
