The World Cup: Counting the Cost

Posted July 8, 2010

South Africa spent huge sums to host the World Cup. In a country suffering growing problems, was it worth the cost?

World Cup fever!
For a small African country, hosting the world's most-watched sporting championship is a once-in-a-lifetime event! It's an event that South Africa has been looking forward to for six years.
But what of the cost of staging such a world-class event?
The $1.2 billion that FIFA (the world soccer federation) has spent on South Africa is more than for any World Cup (WC) in history, according to Business Report (June 17, 2010). Roadto2010WorldCupFinal.blogspot.com estimated the total costs to the country to be around $3.7 billion (March 19, 2008).
"Some more mind boggling numbers to consider," declares SportandDev.org (June 2, 2010): "More than $400 million was spent to renovate the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg; Green Point Stadium in Cape Town was built for $600 million; and a 70,000-seat stadium was built in Durban for $450 million, and that's just a sampling of the money trail.
"Should these jaw-dropping sums of money be spent to erect soccer stadiums in cities where countless children living in the shadows of these extravagant structures don't have...even the equipment to play?"
The New York Times wondered: "How could there be money for a 46,000-seat stadium [in Nelspruit] while many of [the local people] still fetch water from dirty puddles and live without electricity or toilets?" (March 12, 2010).
According to Forbes.com ,"South Africa will be saddled with 10 new or newly renovated football stadiums that are much too large for domestic demand and require a large amount of spending for upkeep and maintenance" (June 21, 2010).

Other costs to consider

What about other indirect costs?
Pretoria News Weekend reported June 19 that around $3 million of public money had been spent so far by government departments and state entities on tournament tickets. "Trade Union Nehawu blasted the spending by 'shameless bureaucratic fatcats. Our union finds it totally unacceptable that our townships are burning because of poor service delivery and millions go hungry every day—yet the...state bureaucrats are stealing taxpayers' money to watch soccer.'"
Telegraph.co.uk had this scathing assessment on June 21: "Present estimates of total cost are 757% above the original guesstimates... The WC expenditure has displaced investment in projects with more intrinsic and long-term priorities such as health and education. It is estimated that WC-related infrastructure spending is equivalent to ten years of housing investment . For every seven seats in the new stadiums a fully equipped school library could have been built—only 7% of South Africa's schools have functioning libraries...
"When South Africa was announced as the host for FIFA's premier event, it was vaunted as a great expression of the so-called Rainbow Nation to bridge social, economic and political interests.
"Here is the reality: The trade unions have been instructed not to strike for the duration of the WC; the matches are not accessible to most local people due to relative remoteness and prohibitive cost; an unofficial 'blind eye' has been turned to human trafficking...leading up to WC; and...South Africa's sometimes shameful behaviour towards other Africans is rearing its head with reports of renewed hostility towards [African] refugees, professionals and business people. Frankly the government was asking a lot from a small leather soccer ball to resolve the country's complex social dilemmas.
"Soccer is historically the sport of the black working class majority and it is this majority who have greatest need of any benefits derived from this event. Unemployment stands at over 40% and youth unemployment stands at nearly 70%" (emphasis added).

The future

Indeed, it could take years for the economy of South Africa to return to normal. But why is it that this country is now facing such an arsenal of maladies?
The loss of God's blessings is hardly surprising considering the way many South Africans (in keeping with the norms of the modern world) continue to ignore the religious and moral standards upon which their nation was built. Too many allow decadence, immorality and pleasure seeking to consume their lives, as our whole world moves farther and farther away from God.
The incredible news is that a better world is in the making, one in which hunger, poverty, pestilence and disease will be unknown. At that time the entire world will learn the way of peace! All nations will live by God's righteous laws! And "the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord" (Isaiah:11:9).

Diversity Is Strength! It’s Also…US-Educated Terrorists

A very interesting post from www.Vdare.com about foreign terrorists being educated in the U.S. This follows this post about Staten Island. This follows this post about another attempt to enter Gaza. (h/t Hugh Hewitt). This follows this post about Genocide in South Africa and this article about the recent news about offshore drilling to encourage American energy independence This is a key issue to prevent money from going to hostile countries such as Iran and Venezuela. Diversity Is Strength! It’s Also…US-Educated Terrorists
By Eugene Girin
Recently, two Muslim New Yorkers—Wesam (Khalid) El-Hanafi and Sabirhan (Tareq) Hasanoff were arrested in Dubai by federal authorities for swearing allegiance and providing technical and material support to Al Qaeda. Federal prosecutors accused El-Hanafi of trying to start his own “mini Al-Qaeda cell” and he was caught with seven Casio watches, which are the preferred bomb timers for Al Qaeda. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of New York, [Indictment: PDF] Hasanoff received $50,000 from Al Qaeda and advised an Al Qaeda member how to use his passport to avoid detection by authorities.
El-Hanafi was born in Brooklyn to an Egyptian family. Hasanoff came to New York from Australia (judging from his surname, he is either from north Caucasus or Central Asia). Like the alleged perpetrator of the Ft. Hood massacre, Nidal Hasan, and the alleged Time Square bomber, Faisal Shahzad, both El-Hanafi and Hasanoff were middle-class graduates of American universities.
El-Hanafi and Hasanoff both attended CUNY Baruch College, which happens to be my alma mater. !” [VDARE.COM note: Baruch is a public college, with no religious affiliation, part of CUNY. It is named for 1889 alumnus Bernard Baruch.] Baruch College prides itself on providing a low-cost, but high-quality education, primarily in the fields of finance, accounting, and management. The College’s motto is: “The American Dream still works
El-Hanafi’s and Hasanoff’s understanding of the American Dream was apparently to earn enough money to help Al Qaeda kill Americans. After graduating in 1998, El-Hanafi worked for Lehman Bros. Hasanoff landed a job at PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Main Stream Media outlets that reported the story were surprised that successful young professionals would abandon their careers and move to the Middle-East to help Al Qaeda. (For example, "The emergence of educated, well-paid professionals allegedly turning to homegrown terrorism may mark a shift from disenfranchised, low-income radicals to a new class of criminal." [Brooklyn men busted in Dubai may be new faces of terror: experts, By Alison Gendar and Samuel Goldsmith, New York Daily News, May 2, 2010])
But as someone who attended Baruch College, I was not surprised at all.
Compared to most other American universities, Baruch may seem like a bastion of conservatism because of its emphasis on business and because of the large number of Russian-speaking students. However, many of the classes I took were permeated with an atmosphere of anti-American feeling. This anti-Americanism emanated almost exclusively from students of Third World origin—both U.S. citizens and international students.
I remember the howls of outrage from my classmates that greeted my suggestion that Al Qaeda terrorists captured in Afghanistan did not deserve the full rights of American citizens, but should be treated like German and Japanese soldiers captured by the U.S. during World War II. Several of my foreign-born classmates yelled that my own U.S. citizenship should be revoked and I “should go back to Russia”.
A Jamaican student then launched a tirade claiming that this country was “built on racism and oppression”. She asserted that every white American (even a relatively recent arrival like me) is responsible for slavery and every form of oppression. She unashamedly stated that reverse discrimination in the form of racial quotas was required to atone for all the evil acts of white Americans.
The professor looked on approvingly during this pathetic outburst and then suggested that we read Howard Zinn’s pseudo-scholarship in order to get a good understanding of American history.
In another class, a Pakistani-American student confided in me that neither Pakistanis nor Pakistani-Americans believe that “Osama” was responsible for September 11: “We all think the U.S. government did it”. The same student lamented the fact that it is not acceptable to beat one’s wife in America.
Both current U.S. immigration policy and the anti-Americanism of the academia are responsible for this emerging phenomenon of Islamic terrorists with American college degrees. Tens of thousands of people from countries with strong Islamist terror networks enter the U.S. through the F-1 student visa granted to international students in American colleges and universities. In 2008, 8038 “international students” entered America from Saudi Arabia; 2377 from Nigeria; 1783 from Malaysia; 1768 from Indonesia; 1107 from Pakistan; 819 from UAE and over 500 each from Egypt and Lebanon. Even if we assume that only half of one percent of these students are Al Qaeda members or active sympathizers, it still means there are about eighty of them. That is four times more than the nineteen hijackers of 9-11.
Undoubtedly, most Americans would be outraged if they knew that thousands of young Saudi men are entering this country every year. (Indeed, the F-1 statistics are—unsurprisingly—not posted on the State Department site. I encountered them by chance at an information website for immigrants.)
The alleged Time Square bomber, Faisal Shahzad entered this country on an F-1 visa. He studied at Southeastern University (which closed last year) and the University of Bridgeport. While attending the latter, Shahzad vented his fury at America and praised the 9-11 murderers in a rambling email. Interestingly, this militancy did not prevent him from going to New York City every weekend to drink and party.
Both of the schools Shahzad attended were cash-strapped and depended on an influx of international students to stay afloat. The potential dangers of these students to America were willfully ignored by the schools’ administrators. If anything, these administrators gush over the fact that so many international students are entering their schools. After all, to the liberal American academia, diversity is our greatest strength—a panacea for all of this country’s real and imagined problems.
At the same time, many American professors, especially those that teach social sciences, are consumed by a scathing dislike of their own country. I have heard professors berate America (especially Middle America) countless times and lament the fact that we are not “more like the Europeans, who figured things out a long time ago”.
I also noticed that liberal professors are eager to insult and make fun of Christianity and Judaism but never criticize Islam or its adherents. Some of my professors railed against Christian “intolerance” and berated Orthodox Jews for “mistreating women”. But at the same time, no mention of Islamic terrorism, oppression or intolerance was ever made.
In this kind of atmosphere, it is not at all surprising that a Muslim student would be radicalized. Even though Shahzad, Hasanoff, and El-Hanafi were business and science majors, they would have been required to take at least one social science course to graduate and the chances are they would be exposed to the anti-American rants of a leftist professor.
So both our immigration policy and the anti-American views of a large number of our professors make it possible for Islamic terrorists to obtain higher education in this country. But, obviously, it is extremely hard to prevent American academia from being so anti-American. This would require a total change in the attitudes of thousands of professors that could only come about through some radical change in society’s mores.
However, we can impose a complete moratorium on F-1 visas for residents of countries with a substantial presence of Islamic terror groups.
If the Republicans succeed in taking back the Congress this November, an F-1 moratorium should be one of their key proposals.
All of the anti-terrorism measures of this and the last administrations amount to nothing if we still admit tens of thousands of prospective Al Qaeda members every year and provide schooling for them in our colleges and universities.

Staten Island pastor no longer approves sale of convent to Muslim Brotherhood-linked group

Staten Island pastor no longer approves sale of convent to Muslim Brotherhood-linked group
In the video on the title link above, I questioned the MAS reps involved in this sale about their ties to the Brotherhood and related matters, and got, as you can see, a windy non-answer.
In reality, the MAS is the Brotherhood in the U.S., and the Brotherhood in the U.S. is a subversive organization:
"In recent years, the U.S. Brotherhood operated under the name Muslim American Society, according to documents and interviews. One of the nation's major Islamic groups, it was incorporated in Illinois in 1993 after a contentious debate among Brotherhood members." -- Chicago Tribune, 2004
The Muslim Brotherhood "must understand that their work in America is a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and 'sabotaging' its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and Allah's religion is made victorious over all other religions." -- Mohamed Akram, "An Explanatory Memorandum on the General Strategic Goal for the Group in North America," May 22, 1991, Government Exhibit 003-0085, U.S. vs. HLF, et al. P. 7 (21).
But Fennessy does not have the power to veto the sale, said Zwilling. That indicates that the Archdiocese of New York is behind this betrayal. "NY pastor no longer approves sale to Muslim group," from the Associated Press, June 18 (thanks to Twostellas):
NEW YORK -- The Staten Island pastor who signed off on a controversial plan to sell a former convent to the Muslim American Society has changed his mind. St. Margaret Mary R.C. Church Pastor Keith Fennessy sent a letter to Archbishop Timothy Dolan saying "after careful reflection" he's withdrawn his support for the convent sale. He also asked the New York Archdiocese to stop the deal from going forward.
Archdiocese spokesman Joseph Zwilling said...the pastor did not have the power to veto the sale. But he said the sale was not final until all approvals were met....

Kyrgyzstan: Another Muslim Problem

Kyrgyzstan: Another Muslim Problem
by David Yeagley · ShareThis

Kyrgyzstan (on the southewestern borders of the old Soviet Union) is in the news. Intense violence is terrorizing the people. The media talking points are the refugeees, their needs and numbers, and a few names of leaders in the region. Predictably, the Muslim element in the story is left out entirely.
AP offers an incredibly inappropriate and inaccurate report from Barry Schweid, which is nothing more than his personal political fantasies. “Analysis: A new venue for US-Russian cooperation.” This was yesterday, June 16, 2010. The Muscovites are not interested in “cooperation” with the United States, never have been, and never will be. Russia is not to be considered European, either, in any traditional sense of the word. Schweid writes as some wistful American academic Communist, in sophormoric reminiscence over the old days of Russian glory. It is a pitifully biased and superfical piece, naming only a few local “political” players in Kyrgyzstan.
Uzbek refugees fleeing Kyrgyzstan, in a glorious liberal slide showattempting to condemn Kyrgystan for nationalism.
The major talking point is the refugee problem. The fleeing Kyrgyz people are amassing at their western border with Uzbekistan. “UN: 400,000 now uprooted by Kyrgyzstan unrest.” The region is chock full of competing ethnic groups, and this is the news story, those who are suffering. Never mind why. Human suffering justifies any course of action to relieve it. This is pure Communism.
To be sure, “ethnic” conflict is code word for “religious” conflict, and that is code for MUSLIM conflict.
We have to go back to a 2005 Reuter’s article to get a picture of the Muslim elements in these artifical ethnic corrals in southern Russia. In “Five facts about Uzbekistan’s Ferghana valley” (May 17, 2005), we read:
The Ferghana valley’s seven million inhabitants make it the most densely populated region of Central Asia. It has suffered ethnic violence and unrest since Soviet times. Clashes that killed dozens drove the Meskhetian Turk minority out of the region in 1989, while Kyrgyz and Uzbeks battled over land rights at the same time.Uzbekistan’s secular government says the valley is a hothouse of Muslim extremists aiming to set up an Islamic state in the region. The government has locked up thousands of suspected militants, drawing sharp criticism from rights groups.
This is precisely the kind of information lacking in the latest reports on the Kyrgyzstan crisis. And then there are these details of the Uzbekistan valley situation:
The valley is largely ethnically Uzbek but is split between Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan in a confused patchwork of Soviet-era borders which often leave enclaves of one country surrounded by the territory of another. In general, Uzbekistan holds the valley floor, Tajikistan holds its narrow mouth and Kyrgyzstan holds the high ground around.
Clearly, these details are templatic, if not archtypical.
While the latest AP reports of the Kyrgyzstan crisis note the conflict is between “ethnic” Uzbeks minority within the majority Kyrgyz people within Kyrgyzstan, the reports do mention the aspect of the heroin trade, and the fact that whatever government is in charge is dependent on the Afghan heroin trade for support. Of course, in the absense of fabulous life styles in the area, we presume the heroin trade supports military efforts–i.e., terrorism, i.e., Muslim conflict. Of course, Muslims are quite willing to slaughter other Muslims, as well as non-Muslims.
The point here is that the media is very much afraid to address any Muslim involvment, let alone culpability. The media exists to praise Islam. The liberal media is an instrument of Islam. That’s the reality we live with.
It appears that the Muslim Uzbeks in Kyrgyzstan are unwelcome. Not that Kyrgystan is averse to Islam (the population being reportedly 80% Muslim), but the government of Kyrgystan is understood to be “secular.” This is a fantastic concept to operate in a Muslim region. It is no doubt at least partly the cause of the conflict. The Uzbeks are more aggressively Muslim, or certainly more “liberal” in their complaints of “genocide.”
One has to reconsider the Serbian conflict over Kosovo. “Ethnic” Albanians (i.e., Muslims) horded into the Serbian province of Kosovo, and in due time, claimed it as their own territory. Serbia was universally condemned for defending its own land, race, and religion (Seriban Orthodox Christian).
It looks like the media is spinning the same kind of story on Kyrgyzstan. The Kyrgyz are expected to bow to foreign rule, basically. Just because its there. Just because an Uzbek community wants to rule. “The audacity of hope,” it’s called here in America, by an alien, black African Communist liar.
The liberals always take the side of whomever appears to be attacked, never mind why they’re being attacked. The media denigrates the defender, always. The media is like a soccer referee. He always sees the retaliation, but rarely the initial offense.
The Uzbeks in Kyrgyzstan want a constitutional referendum? How “democratic.” It’s the Communist manoeuver against any establishment. Well, maybe the conflict in Kyrgyzstan centers around heroin income (which is generally related to arms). Maybe the Kyrgyz simply don’t want a minority ruling any part of their country–especially when that minority has a country of it’s own.
We can be sure of this: Communist, Muslims, liberals, and other tyrannists, all rush to support any “ethnic” minority in conflict. It’s called racial agitation, a basic move in the Communist play book. This is their attempted moral justification for disrupting majority establishment. Any kind of minority will do, be it ethnic, religious, or gender-based. Liberals and other tyrannists apparently want to see only one kind of majority establishment: their own. Like North Korea, like China, like Iran, and like Russia still dreams of. Like Venezuela, like Cuba, and like the alien in the White House wants to see in America.

Iranian Red Crescent says ship carrying humanitarian aid, toys for Gaza Strip to set sail 'at start Tehran's preparations for sending an aid convoy to Gaza are at their peak, and two organizations plan to send ships to the Strip. One of the ships seems to have already set sail, and the other is slated to leave this Saturday. They are expected to arrive at Gaza's shores via the Red Sea.
"The ship will depart for Gaza in a special ceremony that will be attended by thousands of people at the start of next week," a statement on the Iranian Red Crescent's website said on Wednesday.

The Iranian work week begins on Saturday, but the statement did not specify which day the ship will leave. The organization said earlier this week that it is still waiting for a green light from the Iranian Foreign Ministry before setting sail.
According to the statement, the ship is to leave from the Bandar-Abbas Port in southern Iran and travel directly to the Gaza Strip. The first ship will be carrying humanitarian aid for the residents of the Strip, as well as a small team of doctors and aid workers. Alongside the humanitarian aid, gifts will be sent to the children in Gaza, including baby cloths, toys and dolls.
In addition, the Iranian Red Crescent's youth organization said that "in light of the possibility that the Zionist regime may do something evil," they plan to send no more than 10 volunteers who have already undergone training. Their ages were not specified.
The Iranian Red Crescent said that so far, over 155,000 volunteers have signed up for the Gaza flotilla. Registration will continue for a few more days, and is meant mainly as a way for Iranian citizens to identify with the residents of the Gaza Strip.
The organization plans to send another ship to Gaza, most likely a week later, carrying more aid workers such as doctors and volunteers.

Iran is eager to show that it cares more for the Palestinians than Turkey does, and is working fervently to have the blockade on the Strip lifted.
Earlier this week another Iranian ship reportedly set sail for Gaza. The ship set sail on behalf of another organization that is not affiliated with the government, by the name of "The Iranian Company for the Protection of the Palestinian Nation."
The organization's head said this week that it plans to send aid to Gaza through land to Turkey, and from there set sail to Gaza, but did not specify when this would take place.

Genocide In South Africa

A very interesting post from http://www.AmericanThinker.com about Genocide in South Africa This follows this post about a new Staten Island mosque. Genocide In South Africa
By Pamela Geller
The genocide of white South Africans is heating up.Last week, South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) finally told its members to stop singing the song "Kill the Boer" -- that is, murder white South Africans. (Boer is Afrikaans for "farmer," but colloquially is a disparaging term for any white South African.) This came after ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema defied a court ruling and kept singing the song (he still refuses to stop), and after Eugene Terreblanche, leader of the noxious and hateful neo-Nazi Afrikaner Resistance Movement (AWB), was found savagely bludgeoned to death at his farm in South Africa's North West province. The international media focused on Terreblanche's white supremacism, showing his followers giving the Nazi salute at his funeral. No account of his murder or funeral spoke about Malema, "Kill the Boer," or black supremacism -- yet that is the really important story in South Africa today.Whites in South Africa are keenly aware of the plans to kill them. They expect mass killings to begin very soon after the death of Mandela, but to tell this to the world is a waste of energy. More than 3,000 white farmers have already been murdered, and Genocide Watch lists the Boer farmers in South Africa as victims of genocide -- but the media couldn't care less. Malema has praised Zimbabwe's murderous seizure of white-owned farms as "courageous and militant." White South Africans know what's coming.Malema keeps singing the apartheid-era song "Kill the Boer" even though South Africa's highest court ruled that the song was hate speech (a decision the ANC is appealing, although they've asked their followers to stop singing it in the meantime; they've emphasized that they have not banned the song).Under ANC rule, the government has stopped reporting the race of murder victims and the race of the murderer. This is because the international community (mainly GenocideWatch.org) was starting to notice the disproportionate number of whites being murdered in South Africa. The ANC stopped reporting the race of the victims of murder so there would be no way to track the number of black-on-white murders. Problem solved.A Jewish journalist in Johannesburg wrote me last week to shed light on the Malema situation, and on the chaos and deteriorating conditions in that country. About Malema he lamented: "Why isn't anyone standing up to this moron, not even the president?" He noted another South African journalist's observation: "The problem surrounding Malema is that he is basically a ‘dumb orator with popular support.' Like Hitler."Another AtlasShrugs.com reader in South Africa wrote this to me:Have you searched facebook "Julius Malema" I see they have closed down his account, but a new one has already opened with over 2000 fans already. The remarks there were really horrible. They have threatened to "Rape all the white whore bitches and burn all their children"....makes me sleep with one eye open. The American media says little or nothing about the genocide in South Africa, because it's black against white; it's politically incorrect to notice. The mainstream media portrays all white South Africans as racist monsters like Eugene Terreblanche. This is simply not true. And remember: a key step on the road to genocide is to dehumanize the intended victims. What is happening in South Africa against the white population is a crime against humanity. Savage. And no one will speak of it. The leftist media (all big media) and the international community (notoriously left) ignores it entirely. Their silence is affirmation; it sanctions the evil. Most decent people are perplexed by the uneven humanity and inhumanity of our leftist moral "superiors." I am not. They unremittingly vilify the Jewish people and Israel, the most benevolent government and army in the Middle East, but pay scant attention to jihad and the Islamic culture of honor killings, clitorectomies, child slavery, forced marriage, child marriage, etc. Why?Because the leftists are bigots and racists, that's why. Because as morally superior as they think they are, they have no regard for the perpetrators of violence on the left, like the black South Africans. Their subliminal message is clear: "They're animals, whaddaya expect?" That is their prejudice. It's the soft bigotry of low expectations. The genocide of white South Africans? Yawn. "Whaddaya expect?"
