Mass. House Overrides Governor's Rejection of Illegal Alien Vehicle Registration Ban

Massachusetts representatives rejected Gov. Deval Patrick's attempt to neuter legislation designed to ban illegal aliens from registering vehicles in the Commonwealth. The measure -- a part of the state budget bill -- now goes to the Senate for consideration.

As passed by the legislature, the legislation required vehicle registration applicants to prove legal residence with a Social Security Number. In a veto message, Patrick amended and sent back to the legislature language that simply required vehicle owners to prove state residency.

The measure was one of several provisions intended to prevent illegal aliens from driving in the wake of traffic deaths caused by illegal aliens. The governor’s amendatory veto upset the victims’ families. “I’m angry and I’m bitter. We lost a family member,” said Maureen Grossi Laquerre, whose brother was killed by an illegal alien from Portugal who ran a stop sign and blinking red light. “People need to stop taking us lightly.”

Pro-illegal alien groups, which supported the governor’s amendatory veto, decried the House’s action. Frank Soults from the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition said that he believed lawmakers "reacted harshly," and that the Legislature's proposal is a "bad first step in the direction of the Arizona anti-immigration law.”

Other provisions that survived the governor’s veto pen included measures to increase penalties for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle; knowingly permitting an unlicensed individual to operate one’s vehicle; and knowingly employing for hire as a motor vehicle operator any unlicensed individual.
