Are Deadly Infections an Indicator of Worse to Come?

Doctors and hospitals are increasingly sobered by deadly new strains of "superbugs" that are largely invulnerable to today's most potent antibiotics. Is it possible we could we see epidemics of incurable infections?

Almost lost in the deluge of news of advancements in the medical world is the revelation of new strains of bacteria that challenge all we have learned over the past century about fighting disease organisms.
A strain of antibiotic-resistant bacteria known medically as carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae, or CRE, has jumped to the forefront of the medical world's attention due to one very disturbing fact—their near-total resistance to an entire family of drugs known as carbapenum antibiotics makes them nearly impossible to treat once they infect a patient.
Emerging recently in hospitals and nursing homes, they attack the most vulnerable—weaker and elderly patients. And once they get a foothold in a hospital or nursing home, they are virtually unstoppable.
In the face of these and other rising health threats on a national and global scale, we need to consider what's happening and where our primary focus should be.

"Nightmare superbugs"

No less an authority than the renowned Centers for Disease Control and Prevention refers to these lethal bacteria in terms not normally used in the staid medical world. CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden, in a March 6, 2013, USA Today story, says these "nightmare superbugs" present a triple threat. "They're resistant to nearly all antibiotics. They have high mortality rates, killing nearly half of people with serious infections. And they can spread their resistance to other bacteria," Frieden said.
What worries Dr. Frieden and so many others is that antibiotics known to the medical world today have virtually no effect on these superbugs. He and other bacteriologists fear it may be too late to stop their onslaught, which has killed up to 70 percent of patients infected by CRE. Doctors fear they are running out of options to slow or stop the spread.
Friedan warned that the United States has only a "narrow window of opportunity" to take action before it is too late to halt the spread of the bacteria. He envisions a scenario in which antibiotics could become powerless against such common ailments as diarrhea and respiratory and urinary tract infections.
Thus far, CRE infections have been reported in 42 states. As of late last year, about 4 percent of U.S. hospitals had reported at least one case of CRE infection, with that rate jumping to 18 percent among acute-care hospitals.
Even such renowned facilities as the National Institutes of Health's Clinical Center near Washington, D.C., are not immune. Last summer a CRE strain struck the center where it killed seven, including a 16-year-old boy. And there have been worse outbreaks.
Intensive care patients seem to be at the greatest risk, especially those on ventilators or hooked up to central intravenous catheters. Organ transplant patients and those undergoing chemotherapy seem particularly vulnerable. And health officials fear that continued mutation of CRE bacteria could produce varieties that could make even common infections virtually untreatable.
We report this not to dissuade readers from seeking needed medical care, but to increase awareness of the problem. All of us must consider what's happening in the world and exercise wisdom.

Unexpected effects stymie experts

What has brought this alarming state of affairs?
Medical observers have noted that the overuse of certain antibiotics in hospitals and nursing homes has had an unexpected effect: Many of the Enterobacteriaceae have become resistant to most of the antibiotics in general use today. As a result, where just over a decade ago only 1.2 percent of bacteria were antibiotic-resistant, today that number has grown to about 4.4 percent. Ironically, the bugs have become resistant to the very carbapenum antibiotics developed as an answer to weaker earlier antibiotics.
"This has been bred in hospitals and nursing homes because of the way we use antibiotics," said Dr. Carlos Nunez, chief medical officer for CareFusion, a company which markets an infection surveillance system used in many hospitals. "You go to a place where you are supposed to get better and you get an infection where you have a 50 percent chance of dying. It's a nightmare scenario."
The pathogens'ability to survive and become resistant to antibiotics has stymied medical experts. Overuse of antibiotics to kill CRE in past years has produced strains of drug-resistant germs that not only survive, but are able to pass along survival traits to other bacteria found in hospitals.
The growing alarm over the CRE threat has placed hospitals and nursing homes on the defensive. CRE can be transferred from patients to the environment and to the hands of the care providers, such as doctors or nurses, when care providers touch patients or touch them with medical equipment, then touch other patients. To counter this, stricter enforcement of hand washing has become required practice in medical facilities.
Procedures in many hospitals now call for patients considered high-risk for CREs to get special screenings on arrival. Hospital officials now warn hospital visitors to wash their hands thoroughly and insist that anyone who touches them also wash their hands.
CRE infection of a patient triggers additional precautions to reduce the likelihood of its spread to other patients. Under the use of "contact precautions," patients are essentially quarantined, transferred to separate rooms to which the patient is confined and from which visitors are barred. Nurses and other caretakers can be required to wear gloves and gowns each time they enter the room.

Old diseases on the return

For more than a century, America and the Western world have made what seemed to be unstoppable progress on the road to eradicating sickness and disease. One by one through the decades, such dreaded maladies as smallpox, yellow fever, whooping cough and tuberculosis began to disappear as medical research discovered their causes and ways to prevent them.
The 20th century featured a parade of medical advances. One by one, diseases that plagued mankind for centuries fell before the advances of medical science.
Major milestones were the discovery in 1900 of the cause of yellow fever by two U.S. Army doctors, Walter Reed and James Carroll. The 1920s saw the development of vaccines for whooping cough, diphtheria and tuberculosis, and the uses of insulin to treat diabetes. Dr. Jonas Salk astounded the medical world in 1955 with his discovery of a vaccine to prevent polio, which had paralyzed millions. Vaccines for measles, mumps and rubella followed in the 1960s, as did heart and other organ transplants.
And while some diseases, such as cancer and heart disease, have not been stopped, medical science has made great strides in treatment. Survival rates for cancer have improved tremendously since 1960.
A 2009 survey in the United Kingdom showed five-year survival rates for leukemia, prostate, melanoma and several other common cancers to be as high as 84 percent. U.S. five-year survival rates for bladder cancer are as high as 80 percent, and more than 50 percent for lung cancer. Aggressive treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation, and surgery as a last resort, have resulted in cures or partial cures for millions.
But are we now beginning to see a reversal of that trend? Are we starting to lose ground, even retreat, in the face of illnesses where bacteria and other microorganisms mutate to the point they become resistant to the vaccines and antibiotics of modern medical science?
Tuberculosis, once thought to be nearly eradicated, is making a comeback among some sectors of the U.S. population, according to series of recent reports. A current CDC fact sheet reported on the rise of "multi-drug resistant tuberculosis," which seems to be on the rise among many immigrant groups.
These strains of TB have developed resistance to all of the most effective TB drugs, leaving patients the only option, in the bland wording of the report, "to pursue treatment options that are much less effective."
Once thought to be eradicated, scarlet fever has recently been found to be on the increase. The discovery of penicillin in 1943 did much to virtually eliminate the disease, which ravaged America in the 18th and 19th centuries in massive outbreaks. But a new, more virulent form resistant to penicillin has arisen, and outbreaks have occurred in China, where reported cases tripled in 2011. A flurry of new cases broke out in Michigan last year, concentrated among immigrant communities.

Where is our trust?

It's time that all of us start doing some serious reflection and assessment. We might ask whether we've taken modern "wonder drugs" for granted, assuming that science will always find a solution for our problems. Does your Bible have anything to say about this?
Notice the words of Moses to ancient Israel: "If you do not carefully observe all the words of this law that are written in this book . . . then the Lord will bring upon you and your descendants extraordinary plagues—great and prolonged plagues—and serious and prolonged sicknesses . . . all the diseases of Egypt . . . Also every sickness and every plague . . . will the Lord bring upon you until you are destroyed" (Deuteronomy:28:58-61).
Moses also warned of incurable illnesses as punishment for national sins earlier in this passage: "The Lord will strike you with the boils of Egypt, with tumors, and with the scab, and with the itch, from which you cannot be healed" (verse 27). That last phrase strikes a familiar chord with our situation today.
Increasingly, medical issues take the forefront of our concerns. Millions in the Western world, especially those entering late middle age and older, spend more time concerned about the effects of illnesses and what will happen if they have to go into a hospital.
But the God who designed and created the human body has some good news for us. He forgives and heals! Of course, this requires turning to Him and following His ways. Still, the timing remains up to Him. In some cases, He will deliver us immediately. But even if He does not completely heal right now—as He knows what is ultimately best for all of us—He nevertheless has a plan in place that will eradicate sickness and disease forever.
Notice this good news in Revelation:21:4: "'He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death' or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away" (New International Version). And even prior to that, a time is coming when the earth, under the reign of Jesus Christ, will be largely free of pain, sickness and disease. Not only will hospital-born killer germs be eliminated, but there will no longer be a need for hospitals themselves.
If this sounds too fantastic to be true, read the Bible study aids, Why Does God Allow Suffering? and The Road to Eternal Life . You'll find the Bible has much more to say about the scourge of disease.

Report: Obama Administration Gearing Up to Produce Millions of Immigration Documents

Breitbart reports that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) issued a draft solicitation for bids “to support possible future immigration reform initiative requirements.” The October 6 notice seeks vendors able to produce at least four million immigration-related cards per year, with a possible “surge” in 2016 of 5 million additional cards.
The agency is seeking vendors that can produce both Permanent Residency Cards (green cards) and Employment Authorization Documentation (work permit) cards. The solicitation does not indicate the numbers needed for each card but the total contract seeks 34 million cards.
Breitbart quotes the Center for Immigration Studies’ Jessica Vaughan as saying that the solicitation “seems to indicate that the president is contemplating an enormous executive action that is even more expansive than the plan that Congress rejected in the 'Gang of Eight' bill.”
Federal agencies have been known to plan for contingencies, so the solicitation does not guarantee the Administration will follow through and purchase the cards. But a solicitation in January of this year seeking escorts for 65,000 unaccompanied alien children well predicted actual needs.
If the solicitation had been issued last year, one could conclude that it was preparation for implementing the so-called comprehensive immigration reform that most anticipated. But the passage of any immigration legislation in the short-term seems unlikely so Breitbart says the solicitation gives “additional credence to the possibility the move is in preparation for an executive amnesty by Obama.”

Ad Tells North Carolina Voters: Thank Kay Hagan for Funding Abortions With Your Money

by Steven Ertelt | Charlotte, NC | LifeNews.com
A new television commercial has a message for voters in North Carolina: they can thank pro-abortion Senator Kay Hagan for funding abortions with their tax dollars.
Faith Family Freedom Fund, the super fund connected with Family Research Council Action (FRC Action), announced today the launch of a TV and radio ad campaign in the North Carolina Senate race.
kayhagan2The TV ad targets Senator Kay Hagan for supporting Obamacare, which forces every American taxpayer to pay for elective abortions. Last month, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report confirming that Obamacare subsidizes elective abortions with taxpayer funds and lacks transparency in its abortion coverage.
“President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid have played fast and loose with our tax dollars,” said Faith Family Freedom Fund President Connie Mackey. “Kay Hagan played alongside with them and now the Government Accountability Office has confirmed that American taxpayers are subsidizing elective abortions. This is unconscionable. We must change the leadership in the Senate now and fill the leadership void in the White House later.”

Doctor speaks to patient:
Don’t worry… it’s painless.
Doctor: It’s a new procedure performed through Obamacare – supported by Kay Hagan.
Your tax dollars are removed and some go to pay for abortions.
And yep… every taxpaying American gets this operation.
Want to opt out because of your religious convictions?
Sorry… guess you’ll have to pray for forgiveness.
You can thank Kay Hagan for that one.
I’ll see you real soon.

Wknd Box Office: John Wick, Birdman, Ouija, Dear White People, The Blue Room

Here is an interesting article from http://www.debbieschlussel.com/ reviewing some of the movies that came out over the past weekend. This follows this post about some of the movies from last week and THIS POST about some movies that have been released over the past few years that you might have missed! This all follows this post about guidelines to choosing good movies to watch yourself!

Wknd Box Office: John Wick, Birdman, Ouija, Dear White People, The Blue Room

Since I had five movies to review this weekend and a lot of catching up to do after the Jewish holidays, I didn’t finish my reviews in time before the Jewish Sabbath. That said, there’s very little to recommend:

* “John Wick“: This is Keanu Reeves’ latest attempt to get his movie career back on track. Sadly, for him, it fails. At age 50, Reeves looks all of 30. He’s in great shape, looks very good, and makes a terrific action hero. But this action movie, while starting out with intrigue, quickly becomes a silly, stupid mess. It was incredibly violent and bloody for no reason, and it’s hard to root for a former hit man (Reeves).
The story: Reeves is a former hitman for a Russian mob boss. He’s been outta the biz for a while, and his wife just died of a chronic illness. His late wife sent him a cute dog, and he drives a very cool 1969 Mustang Mach 1. The Russian mob boss’ spoiled thug son sees Reeves at a gas station and wants to buy the Mustang, not knowing that Reeves used to work for his father. When Reeves tells him it’s not for sale, the mobster prince and his fellow mobsters break in to Reeves’ house, kill his dog, and steal his car.
And then the movie gets really stupid really fast. Reeves singlehandedly takes on the entire Russian mob and kills them all (all because they killed his dog). But it doesn’t happen fast. In fact, despite so much shooting and so much action, it’s a bore and just totally unbelievable and silly. I like a good action movie, especially one with guns. This ain’t it.
As a Russian speaker, I noticed that not a single person in this movie who is supposed to be Russian has a decent Russian accent or can speak Russian worth a lick. But for most of the idiots who go and enjoy this waste of time, I’m sure they are too ignorant to notice and couldn’t care less if they did.
Keanu Reeves is better than this.
ONE MARX

* “Birdman“: I had mixed feelings about this. Overall, I liked the idea of this–an actor known for playing a superhero, now in his older years seeking to make a comeback and be taken seriously. And it’s very weird and different, which I usually enjoy. I liked the ambiguity of the ending, too, something that I also find appealing in movies. And it’s very funny. Plus, all of the acting in this is very good. But it’s very filthy, somewhat unnecessarily so. And I could have done without a good deal of the melodrama (such as the scene in which the actor’s daughter yells at him, saying what a nobody he is and that he doesn’t matter).
Michael Keaton, who once played Batman, is Riggan, an actor who is known for playing a superhero called “Birdman.” Now, though, he’s older and washed up and seeking to make a comeback. He’s invested everything he has left into a play that is about to open on Broadway, betting on this to bring him back to former glory. He wears a hairpiece that only covers the hair on the back and sides of his head. He has an alter ego that constantly talks to him, and the alter ego takes the form of “Birdman,” telling him not to let all the lesser-thans get him down. And he levitates and flies . . . or does he? Amidst all this, he must deal with an egomaniacal younger actor (Edward Norton), a recently rehabbed drug addict daughter (Emma Stone), and other forces that seem to get in the way.
While there are several interesting scenes, to me the best was the dialogue between Riggan and the New York Times theater critic. She tells him the night before his play is to open that she’s already written her review because she hates him and all that he stands for. She hates commercial actors who’ve played superheroes and mass-appeal roles for the idiots of this world, and she will write the worst review ever because she wants him to fail. She tells him, “I will close your play.” And that is the attitude of not just the Times’ theater critic, but pretty much every Times’ writer and “reporter” in real life. And you can say that about most of the mainstream media, including FOX News. They all have an agenda and have decided what they are going to tell you to think before they’ve ever investigated.
The movie also shows the power of social media and features a funny scene in which Keaton gets locked out of the theater in his undies. Don’t wanna tell more or it will give the funniest part of the movie away and steal your laughs.
If you’re not a prude and you like interesting and different movies, this is for you. It’s a somewhat dark movie with dark (and quite dirty) humor. But, despite my reservations, I liked it overall.
TWO REAGANS

* “Ouija“: This movie is aimed primarily at teens and 20-somethings, as evidenced by the few adults in the movie and very few lines they have in it. But, as horror movies go, it was better than many others I’ve seen of late, as it’s quite scary without being graphic and bloody. The best horror movies scare you psychologically rather than graphically. And this movie does start out well. But, in the end, it kind of degrades into the ridiculous and messy. (I also noted that, finally, there is a movie in which a character is named, “Debbie,” something I rarely see anymore as the generation in which new parents got the “Debbie Memo” is long gone.) But, alas, as soon as I cheered for that in my mind, Debbie commits suicide.)
The story: a teen girl (Debbie) is possessed by demons coming from her Ouija board, after she tries to burn it in her home’s fireplace. The girl then commits suicide. Her best friend, Laine, who doesn’t believe Debbie would commit suicide, investigates and finds Debbie’s Ouija board. She believes that Debbie’s death has something to do with the Ouija board and asks all of Debbie’s friends and her boyfriend to take part in using the board to call to Debbie’s spirit. Soon, demons start appearing and some of the friends become possessed and die. And Laine sets out to fix this.
By the way, the message of the movie is not to play with Ouija boards and not to have them in your home, as they open channels that bring evil spirits to possess you. As I noted, it’s very scary in parts, and I’m not easily scared after so many of these. I also noted that as I was watching this, I thought, “Hmmmm . . . all of these teens are White (though there is an ambiguously Hispanic grandmother character). Will minority groups whine like they did about ‘Friends’ and ‘Sex & the City,’ that none of their people got the chance to be possessed and killed by demons?” It’s not so far-fetched.
It’s an okay movie, but just okay, and only for what it is: a horror movie aimed at teens and 20-somethings. For everybody else, there are better choices.
ONE REAGAN

* “Dear White People“: Oy, I so hated this movie. It was sooooo incredibly stupid and boring. So pointless. I know it’s supposed to be militant Blacks teaching us White people about how racist we are, whether or not we try to be “down wit’ da struggle.” But it’s just sooooo bad, it fails to make the point . . . or any point whatsoever. I was definitely “down wit’ da struggle.” I struggled and struggled and struggled to sit through this movie and stay awake. It was just that dumb, plotless, and hard to follow. This is a definite time bandit that stole nearly two hours of my life I’ll never get back, all in the name of its vast idiocy.
The story: various types of Black students are enrolled at some fictional Ivy League university. They are of various types: a biracial Black militant, a gay nerd, a pretentious woman who wants to be cast on a reality show, the Dean’s son who has a White girlfriend who think she’s being liberated by sleeping with him, and so on. These various types of Black students conflict with each other but all come together at the very end of the movie when the evil White students hold a racist “Black party” of sorts, in which Whites dress up as Blacks. I already made this movie sound far more sensical and interesting than it is. The movie mocks Tyler Perry movies, but those are Shakespeare compared to this bleeping waste of time.
It’s no surprise that this crappy “movie” was funded by Kickstarter-style mooching. Every single major Kickstarter feature film I’ve seen is utter garbage. Dear Black People, please make better movies.

* “The Blue Room [La Chambre Bleue]“: I normally like the French crime thrillers and mysteries they show here in the States. But this is an exception. It lacked any suspense, excitement, or mystery. And I found it slow, boring, disjointed, and not tightly written. Plus, there are too many flashbacks and flashes back to the present, making it confusing. Moreover, they never really tell you if any of the people did what they are accused of, and, here, ambiguity is not good for the story.
The story: a small-town married man is cheating on his wife with the wife of the local pharmacy owner. But, then, the man finds himself accused of murder. The movie never makes clear whether or not he did it or if he was framed by his paramour, though it makes implications. Most of the movie consists of the man being interviewed by police detectives and then by some sort of judge in a preliminary hearing. We see flashbacks to what happened. But not much is ever really shown. The movie–even though it is only 76 minutes long–seems to drag on without anything every really happening. We simply aren’t shown much, other than many shots of frontal nudity and sex.

Should Christians Celebrate Halloween?

Halloween is a major holiday in the Western world for people of various backgrounds. Can Halloween celebrations be reconciled with a Christian worldview and lifestyle? The Bible holds the answer.

Should Christians Celebrate Halloween?
Jack-O'-Lantern
Source: Wikimedia Commons
Monday night millions of children around the nation will be donning costumes, ringing doorbells and uttering the traditional "trick or treat" Halloween greeting. Most people consider this a harmless, fun activity for children. Others condemn the entire occasion because of the pagan origin of the day and connect it with demonism and the occult.
An article from a prominent Christian magazine suggested that "Christians should embrace the 'devilish' holiday with gusto—and laughter." The author suggests that Halloween presents us with an opportunity to "mock" and "laugh at" Satan and "the forces of evil."
A local pastor, writing wistfully of his past childhood Halloween celebration, said, "I enjoyed being a devil." He asserted that "a child doesn’t think of a red devil as an enemy of God or the apostle of hate and destruction." He went on to defend wearing costumes as merely superficial, and suggested that opposition to celebrating Halloween stems from lack of confidence in Christian beliefs.

Really only harmless fun?

Wait a minute! Is it unchristian for parents not to want their children to dress up as the Devil? Or does Satan theDevil even exist? According to a recent Barna survey, nearly 50 percent of professing Christians do not believe that Satan is a living being. For these folks, the whole question must be a moot point. But perhaps the rest of us ought to reconsider our perspective regarding Halloween.
Would anyone dare to suggest applying this reasoning to Hitler? Would wearing Hitler masks and swastikas and dressing like the skeletal remains of his victims be an appropriate way to "laugh at" Hitler and "mock" the diabolical evils of Nazism?
Is Satan a laughing matter? Does God want our children to associate fun and treats with the forces of evil?
I am not implying that a child who puts on a Halloween mask is dabbling in the occult or is in danger of demon possession. I am simply questioning the suggestion that Halloween serves a positive Christian purpose.
According to Deuteronomy:12:31-32 God does not approve of recycling, reconstituting and relabeling pagan customs to celebrate Christian events.

Carnal holidays trumped by God's Holy Days

My wife and I just finished celebrating eight fun-filled days of the Feast of Tabernacles with more than 700 men, women and children here in Central Oregon. I so much wish all of Christianity could share the joy of this meaningfuloccasion. Here is a God-ordained festival that was observed by Jesus, Paul and the apostolic Church and is still celebrated today by many Christians. It is one of seven annual Holy Days that foreshadow future events in God's plan (Colossians:2:16-17) rather than focusing on the powers of darkness that form the legacy of Halloween.
Anyone who dares express objections to Halloween has two strikes against him: 1. It is fun for the kids, and 2. It is a long-standing, firmly entrenched custom in our culture.
But the Feast of Tabernacles has Halloween beat in both categories: 1. It is fun for kids and the whole family and is eight days long, and 2. It was established thousands of years ago by God Himself. And most importantly, it and all of Holy Days of the Bible teach valuable lessons about the plan of God.
