Emergency appeal for victims of extremist attacks in Nigeria

We are encouraged to learn that, while violence by the extremist group Boko Haram is continuing, the crisis in Nigeria has not developed to the extent feared. Christians who fled their homes as a result of recent militant atrocities have been helped by local churches and by the authorities and some from Yobe state are now even returning to their homes.

The situation, however, remains desperate so funds are still needed to provide vital support.

‘Praise God that local churches and the Nigerian state stepped in to help those who had fled their homes but the situation is still critical,’ our partner, Mark Lipdo, of Stefanos Foundation, told us on February 16. ‘Twelve Christians, eight from one church, in Maiduguri, were killed on Monday; in that place alone there are 142 families bereaved since June 2011 who are still needing trauma counselling.’

As well as counselling for victims of the violence and medical help, financial aid is also needed for those who have lost the family breadwinner.

On top of this Stefanos is also needing to prepare for the effects of further violence. ‘We are planning to have to deal with 25 major incidents in northern Nigeria this year,’ he said. ‘So far more than 100 Christians have been killed since the start of 2012.’

Thank you so much for your practical compassion for persecuted Christians!
